View Full Version : Long (50ft+) Video Cable runs... what to do?

I am using a computer to output video (ATI Video card with DVI connectors) to a JVC Rs1u projector (HDMI input, no DVI!). I need to go at least 50' and ideally 65'. It looks like I have a few options, all of which are expensive!

Here's what I know so far:

Option 1: Buy a long dvi to HDMI cable from cables to go or similar: http://www.cablestogo.com/product.asp?cat%5Fid=3606&sku=40293
(If that wont, work, buy a long DVI cable and use a HDMI adapter?)

Option 2: Buy a CAT5e solution like the Extron DVI 201: http://www.extron.com/product/product.aspx?id=dvi201txrx&search=60-734-03

My question is... Can I use a dvi to hdmi cable? To clarify, can I use a DVI source like my computer and plug it in to a projector that has a hdmi port, or can you only go from a hdmi source to a dvi display? Will I see a degradation at this length? Do I need an amplifier to go those lengths?

I will be using full 1920x1080 HD content coming out of the PC, and the video display is set at 60Hz.

Whats the best way to do this?

For your computer you can use a DVI to HDMI cable or DVI to HDMI adapter. At 50 feet I'd look into an extender solution (the extron is fine) rather than one long cable. With extender solutions I would make sure I have an audio receiver or preamp that has a delay for sound.

blujean cables says they've tested their new cable manufactured by Belden with 1080p to over 100'.

They're one of the sponsors, they usually have a graphic/link at the top somewhere.

inwall or no?

inwall, CL2 rated at the very least.

From an installers standpoint. Rapidrun cabling (Cablestogo). DONE. One wire and then if in the future you want VGA or what not, easy to change ;)
