I'm planning on using 12 gauge wire to run in-wall for my speakers. Is there any merit to using CL3 versus CL2?

Let me know what you think. Thanks!

BIGmouthinDC,

Thanks for the link. Okay, so per code it makes no difference, but what about performance wise?

Copper is copper, a slightly different plastic coating will have no impact. You should probably read this.

Did you read the article?

So, if a cable isn't marked CL2 or CL3, is it suitable for in-wall installation? It may be. The NEC allows cable of a higher rating to be substituted for a lower rating, and therefore, any of the following may be used: CM, CMP, CMR, CMG, CL2R, CL3R, CL2P, CL3P, PLTC. CMX also may be used where CL2X or CL3X is required.

I read both articles. It looks like gauge is more of a determining factor.

Thanks for the replies!

Sorry, for some reason when I read your original post I thought the question was whether or not you needed to use CL3 rated cables or not for in wall installation.

Oops!:o
