I'm in the market for another DVD recorder since my liteon recorder is dead after a good year of recording.
I will use the DVD mainly to record from other sources and maybe playback from time to time as well.
Here is what I'm looking for
- Good quality recording
- 1080p up conversion
- good size HDD
- Can be made region free or region free
- having a VCR will be good

The only one that I found but is not made any more is the pani 75h.
I was in Japan 3 months ago and they had tons of these and I'm surprised that I can't find many here.

Any recommendations?
Thanks

Japan isn't under the control of the 2000 lb gorilla named the MPAA. Your only option today is to move there if you want what they have. Common sense should tell you it has nothing to do with "not making a profit in the USA market" like others have stated. They don't want you have a hard drive now so you will have a hard time finding one. They for sure don't want you to have a region free machine so that is out also. The other three items should be easy to find in the USA today.

What's so special about a hard drive when it comes to digital rights management?

sorry, did not mean to turn this question into a political thing.
I was just wondering why I can't find with these specific needs. I know that region free is not going to happen out of the box but with some tweaks they can be region free.
I just don't get it why they don't have units with HDD here.

They do... Check out the Philips 3575 - there's an entire thread dedicated to it...

Thank you daniel711, this is what I'm looking for.
If there are any other brands, please let me know.

Cheers

B&H Photo Video has a few international, multiformat models, that will play and record in PAL, as well as NTSC, but you won't get a Pioneer guarantee, only a store guaranttee. You can check www.videohelp.com for their DVD hack list, to see if they can be made region-free as well. Another source for multiformat, region free equipment is www.jvbdigital.com. Neither option is cheap, but you should find something to suit you.
