Warner has confirmed this morning in a private conversation with insiders that they are totally committed to HD DVD.

They will discontinue using combo format discs for now and will be producing HD DVD only discs.

This was expected, as they had previously announced they are re-issuing all their Combo releases as HD DVD-only on October 2nd.

It is thought that they will be switching to the Triple-Layer Twin-Disc format at some point in the future. These will afford them the ability to do HD DVD/DVD combos, but on the newer single-sided Twin-Disc format.

WHOO HOO!

I hope they find success in the Twin they couldn't find with the combo. It is the best chance either format has of becoming adopted on a broad scale. Still, if its not working you need to try a new direction.

I hope this doesn't dissuade them from going exclusive at Cedia (KIDDING!!)

You might want to change the first part of the title. Some ** fans might have to change their underwear because it.

Hopefully this will equate to even pricing between BD and HD-DVD... and if I can be let dream, cheaper pricing than BD.

I would retitle this thread to Warner drops HD DVD Combos in favor of HD DVD only discs. Your Title will get the Blu Smurfs over at Blu-Ray.com all riled up again after their WB Switching to Blu-Ray hoax reached 1000+ replies on their forum.

Yeah, the wording in the title made me think this was a joke thread based on the Blu-ray exclusive thing. Maybe make the title something along the lines of "Warner discontinues Combo discs, Releasing HD DVD only discs after Harry Potter".

What are the mini van DVD PLAYER MOMS GOING TO DO?

Managed copy? Maybe? For now, the HD market is too small for it to make a serious impact. I would guess the $5 price difference is a bigger factor for now than the ability to playback on DVD players.

When you say "switching to HD DVD ONLY" it suggests no more DVD as well, somebody should correct this thread title.

It didn't suggest that to me.

Warners moves lately have shown more and more interest in giving HD-DVD the "best chances possible" of succeeding in gaining market share and sales volumes over Q4. This appears to be yet another move.

- They've announced the HP series evenly priced.

- Re-releasing prior combo releases as HD-DVD only and likely at a reduced price - Plus this should help put more titles on the shelves as many retailers may view these as "new releases" rather than replacements.

- Offering up 300 HD-DVD only in all Toshiba boxes

- Announcing two new "Best Of" box sets to even-up with the BD releases.

I think their press article was serious when they said "we will be watching Q4 very closely". It's amost as if they want HD-DVD to be what the DVD Forum and Toshiba have told them it could be -- and they are doing everything in their power to help put HD-DVD at the very least fairly matched against BD in both titles and pricing.

Have re-stated my OP. They made the statement this morning in a private conversation with insiders.

They have changed policy on the Combo discs because they felt there was resistance to them being "flippers" and that it was an additional selling proposition.

However, they have confirmed that the rumour posted yesterday is "absurd" and completely false.

They have also confirmed that previously announced HD DVD Combo releases, such as Harry Potter, will go ahead as announced.

P.S. the thread title is perfectly clear, as it states discontinuing HD DVD Combo Discs. No attacks please.
