I generally get my amazon shipments in the mailbox one or two days after street date. But I live within 70km of their Mississauga distribution center.

To date, the only time I had to pay duty and tax is when I chose expedited and it was strangely sent direct from US. Don't choose the premium postage and you should be ok.

Having said that. Sometimes, Walmart have the disks the saturday before street date (always a tuesday).

Amazon.ca doesn't have good enough prices for you? I suspect now with the dollar on par, they will be the first to slash the prices.

One week when your items are sent tuesday (I live in Quebec). And It happens that items are sent Monday instead of Tuesday. In this case, my parcel is at my door the Friday of the same week

Also, are they charging tax at customs?

No!:D I didn't pay any customs fee or tax until today! ;)

The Last Starfighter - Amazon .ca - $31.19

- My most recent order arrived in 5 days for some instock items (I'm in Ontario)
- No gst/pst/customs/duty, it actually was shipped from a Canadian address (I'm not sure how they work that, but I'm not complaining)

it all depends on your location.

I'm in Alberta and it usually takes about a week and a half after amazon.com has told me they shipped. But people in Ontario get theirs within days.

Never been charged duty or anything (only from amazon.co.uk).

Yes, Canadian pricing is complete bull$#!t. Is there anyway we can email them and complain? They can't be that oblivious, can they? I can just see Amazon.com putting an end to Canadians purchasing anthing on their site that can be ordered at Amazon.ca. :mad:

Typically on a new release MSRP is 39.99$US and it 49.99$CAD... it mean wtf is that 1997 exchange rate? LOL

There is another option, there is a store in Ajax ON (20 mins east of Toronto) that easily beats the prices of BB/FS or Amazon.

I know the owner, he also has a website. I'm not sure about shipping prices as I always buy from him directly, but his title prices are the best around.

And they'll tell you "It's more expensive to do business in Canada so that is why the prices there are higher". Meanwhile I'll be place another order to the US.

Amazon.ca isn't really Amazon. They do run the website and all but have no "legal" presence in Canada. They do have an agreement with Canada Post to run their fullfillment center in Mississauga.

So what happens when you order from Amazon.com is that the US entity bills you (instead of the "fullfillment center" in MIssissauga) and then they send the shipping details to Mississauga.

Because the goods are already in the country no customs or duty is charged and because you got billed in the US no GST and PST is due either.

It's a neat little trick, I wonder when the Government is going to figure that one out and dings Canada Post / Amazon.com with back taxes or something like this.

The only issue for me is this, I was going to order 2 discs and total was $40 then went to check out and low and behold, shipping was almost $11!!!!!!!:eek:. Total after shipping was almost $51. Ok, these 2 titles are $52 at BB/FS plus tax..in this case I save maybe $8?? for two movies. I'll just go to BB pay the extra $4 and take it home.

I also placed an order for 4 movies, total was $82.50, whats this? shipping as soon as possible option, standard delivery....yikes $114.50!!...ok, I knew it was too good to be true.:confused:

Yeah the only negative with ordering from .com is the shipping but it still almsot always worth it. It was sweet when I was in my year of the 10% off HD media jig and basically got my shipping cost knocked off but now that I am out of my year subscription thing the savings is clearly cut by a couple bucks per title but that is still fine as you will see below:

I recently made an order for 7 discs and the shipping came to 19 bucks. My total after credit card conversion was 197 bucks CDN. Still much better than the $264 it'd cost after tax at Futureshop.:)

Sure, the shipping is not free but take the "long" shipping ... it's really way better than the "anticipated ship date"; again about a calendar week in most cases from order placement to ripping open the parcel. The shipping, in my experience, is approximately equal to PST+GST -- so if I focus on the cost of goods at amazon .com, .ca, BB, FS or HMV ... it's apples to apples.

I still buy stuff at amazon .ca because some things are so close in price that the free shipping + pst + gst is a wash with pay the shipping + fre pst + free gst. I always support the "local guy" if the cost of doing so isn't silly -- even when the "local guy" is amazon .ca.

I'm also in Toronto and amazon will usually ship stuff on the Monday for Tuesday releases. They usually arrive at my door by that Friday but occasionally it takes a few extra days. I do the standard shipping which is something like 12 bucks but as I usually wait to order 4 or 5 movies at the same time that's still way less than I would pay with taxes on top of Amazon having better prices anyway than I've found in any brick and mortar in T.O.

Maybe we should do, like some other people are doing to the auto giants, by starting a class action lawsuit. Last week a class action lawsuit was started to make many of the big automakers pay back money to Canadians, who bought new cars in the last two years. It was found that Canadian consumers were being ripped off by the automakers and dealerships at the tune of over 20%, more than the U.S. consumers were paying. The Canadian dealerships even went as far as making deals with U.S. dealerships, to not sell cars to Canadians, hence maintaining their marketshare. We in the HDM world should do the same to Amazon, if they don't stop these unfair trade practices.

The only problem with that is that from my place to his place (and back) will cost me easily $15 in gas alone (not taking 45 mins turnaround time into consideration). If I buy 3 movies, that's about $5 in "shipping" per movie. With Amazon.com, the average shipping is $4 per movie. Add the (say) $2 difference per movie, plus the 10% off each Amazon.com title, for each movie I buy from Amazon.com, I'll save about $5 compared to if I buy it from this guy.

But I think you can post the person's name and contact info. What's the difference between that than saying "Fry's are selling BD players for $1 million!! ;) "

Its been a few months since I placed an order at Amazon.com , usually place an order for 3 or 4 movies.

1) When did the shipping rates go up? $16.95 to ship 4 movies ? WOW :eek:

2) Does anyone know if there are custom charges if you order over $100 of movies? :) (I may order more to save on shipping)

with shipping amazon.com is still a better value then buying in Canada.

Normaly shipping takes 5-7 business days for me

priority takes 1-2 days for me.

I have never paid any duty on the 70+ movies I have ordered from amazon.
