View Full Version : multiple locations for PJ ?

My HT room will be 12x15 with 16:9 aspect ration screen around 104" diagonal. I am planning on mounting the PJ (an not-yet-determined 1080p model) at the rear of the room. My equipment closet will be right next to it. At that PJ mounting location, I will need relatively short cables. I have read numerous threads that suggest wiring for multiple PJ mounting positions. However, this advice is usually given for significantly larger rooms than mine.

So I am wondering, is this necessary in a relatively small HT room like mine? If I should, how far from the screen should I run conduit for this second location?

Thanks.

This pretty much goes against the advice of everyone on the forum, but i would (and did) stick with one location. Reason being, i didnt want to poke any more holes in my aquarium than neccessary (for an outlet etc.)

What i did was looked up a bunch of the projectors that i was considering, and some of the more expensive ones that are 1080p that i wont be considering for a couple years at least, and chose a location that would work for a decent number of projectors using the zoom. The location i ended up choosing (17') works perfect for my shortlist for current projectors, and should be fine for a good number of projectors in the future.

I am interested in this as well.

Thanks for the suggestion Minhas. Anyone else feel 17' is a good distance to pre plan for?

thank you.

Consider the placement of the projector for 'optimum light output' to be the most important factor.

Projector fan noise will be more of an issue with people sitting directly underneath.

I ended up putting my projector at 13' from my 100" screen because my 2x lens made it possible.

Not everyone will have this flexibility with there particular model.

At my room dimensions of 14'W x 20'L this put my projector just ahead of the first row of seats.

Most projector models around 1000 lumens will lose too much light output projecting across the room with the zoom range adjusted acordingly at distances close to 20'.

In a 'bat cave' environment it might be okay with a brand new bulb but a few months later the brightness loss will be noticable.

High gain screens to compensate will have negative results as well as the positive ones so the trade off will be up to the individual.

Just my personal opinion of course as every person will see the same opinion differently.;)

i failed to mention a really important point. It depends on your screen size! 17' was good for me as im shooting for 120" 16:9

I checked out a few possible PJs on projectorcentral to check throw distances etc. In deciding on my placement, I put the zoom in the middle of the projectors zoom range because I had read somewhere on here that it is best to do so. My HT is fully light controlled, i.e., a windowless box, and the two PJs I currently am considering are 1200 and 1300 lumens (if I were buying now, I would get the 1200 lumens PJ).

Yes, the middle of the zoom range would be a standard reference point.:)
