I am awaiting delivery of my 42" Sharp 1080p TV and plan on using it with my
PC with Vista Ultimate Media Center that I use now with AVerTV Hybrid Ultra USB TV Tuner that includes an Analog/Digital ATSC receiver . I have to choose between paying my cable company (Patriot Media) $16.90 a month for their PVR (Motorola Dual-Tuner DVR High-Definition Set-Top DCT6412) and basic HD TV channels (ABC,NBC,CBS,FOX HD) or getting a good UHF antenna (CM 4228 or 91XG) for the same OTA local HD channels and using Media Center to record HD programs.
Patriot Media is now owned by Comcast and I wonder if they will switch much more cable channels that I get in SD like ESPN, Speed etc to HD like Direct TV is doing.

BTW I have recorded HD programs in MC using a Terk indoor antenna for OTA HD but reception does not come in all the time.

Well after explaining this to my wife this morning she likes the idea of the antenna/Vista MC OTA HD over a monthly $16.90 cable bill . So I am going to test my Terk indoor antenna up on the roof today to see how much better the signal is compared to ground level and then I think I will order the 91XG since it's only 5 lbs vs 16 lbs for the CM4228.

My indoor Terk antenna showed a much better PQ on ABC Digital in SD from my roof than ABC from my cable using Vista MC so I will be ordering the 91XG on monday with chimney mount etc My NASCAR race comes on ABC in HD Sunday at 2pm and I will put the Terk antenna up there to record it in HD.:)

Remember outdoor antennas need proper grounding.

I like the idea of ABC showing ESPN HD since there is no other way to watch ESPN HD on free OTA. :)

Unless all your OTA transmitters are on the same tower or very close to each other, you'll need a rotator for the 91XG. It's very directional, unlike indoor antennas like your Terk.
Go to http://www.tvfool.com/ and enter your address or precise latitude/longitude to get information about the signals from stations in your area. Pay particular attention to the "Rx(dBm)" column in the table. With the 91XG you should be able to receive most digital stations down to about -100, and probably some below that.
The table will also tell you what directions the stations are in, relative to your location, and how far away they are.

TV Fool shows 61.5° to nine of my digital stations ABC,CBS,NBC,FOX,PBS,CW etc and CEA shows them as being 74° compass orientation from my address. My signal seemed best at around 74° with my Terk antenna. Since all the digital local stations I am interested in are using the Empire State Building as transmission tower I don't think it's worth adding a rotator.

BTW WABC-DT is shown as having the worst signal ( HDTV antenna CEA zones ) but in fact has the best PQ of all my local OTA digital stations from NYC using the indoor Terk antenna up on my roof.
