View Full Version : Another Best Buy anecdote.
vinnie97 09-29-07, 01:08 AM At my locale (which has traditionally had equal space for both HD DVD and Blu-Ray), they've expanded the Blu-Ray section to 5 separate shelves and kept HD DVD at just 2. Due to this decision, the HD DVD titles are literally crammed into their apportioned space with zero free space and some titles obviously not getting much visibility (the Heroes boxsets can barely breathe, lol) . Blu-Ray on the other hand has been apportioned so much space that individual titles are spread out and appear in multiple stacks across a single row. Best Buy knows something OR they've been handsomely subsidized...again.
That BD-UP5000 is looking ever more attractive (too bad it won't be 2.0 compliant).
They've expanded HD DVD space at mine. Although a BD display has "popped up" in the Magnolia section. BDA dollars at work, I would think...
theforce8686 09-29-07, 01:19 AM Who would have thought that a business is giving more space to an item that is selling better then its competitor and has done so for almost 10 months straight. Weird.

Heh, yeah. The business world is funny that way.

Certainly, the PS3 is the worst-selling game console on the market - and has been since inception last year. Yet, there are dozens upon dozens of them stacked up all over my Best Buy, who clearly have no where to put them, since they haven't been selling as expected.
I took a video of the customer servive desk at the front of the store, where the piles have spread to - http://www.campaignhd.com/images/MOV-0029.3gp
So clearly, one does not mean the other...

At mine, they are split 3 and 3, but Blu-Ray has gotten the bad end of the deal. The 3 HD DVD are together, and the Blu-Ray is 2 on one isle and 1 on the flip side. It scared me a little, because I thought they were cutting back on BD. To me the set up really is in favor of HD.

A salesman at my store today said the HD DVDs are outselling the Blurays at that store.

Local store information is rather useless.

Then both formats should share one section, with the rest of the space given back to DVD, it would be a much better reflection of sales ratio to alloted space.
I've often suspected HDM's presence at Best Buy has more to do with payola than any logical representation of how well it's selling with it's just under 3% market share.

won't get an argument there, yet every third day we get a new thread devoted to these priceless observations, I trust never by anyone saying their format of choice is in the minority.

forgive me for my ignorance, but what does the PS3 have to do with BD software? Gamers dont buy BD's, remember. Also, kind of counterproductive to say "hey look how abysmal the PS3 sales are" when BD is still coasting in the software ratio with the aforementioned "abysmal" PS3 sales.....but what do i know, i dont run my own website.

i talked to all the other salesmen at your store, and they said the one saleman you talked to is a compulsive liar and hd-dvd fanboy. then they told me blu-ray actually outsells hd-dvd 100 to 1.
true story.

Which Best Buy are you talking about? Remember I'm in Miami same as you...
Don Borvio 09-29-07, 03:11 AM Hmm, seems strange that they would unbalance the sections, I don't think BB corporate would like that if they heard it. I just went to one and each HD DVD and Blu-ray had 5 shelves a piece! That's 2.5x the space I saw earlier. They almost have a whole aisle to themselves (Blu-ray on one side, HD DVD on the other). Nice to see the selection increasing...just need to do something about those prices.

There was also one of those placed in an aisle between the CDs and DVDs.
This may not point to anything more than a manager who is a Blu-Ray fanboy in disguise. ;) And Timothy, only reason I commented was due to the stark difference to stock that has been pretty evenly allocated space for months and then I walk into this.
Perhaps it is isolated...anyone else notice this within the last few weeks?
rwestley 09-29-07, 07:01 AM I live on Long Island and I have seen the same display as in the original post. The HD disks are crammed in on one rack and the Blu-Ray disks have a nice display next to the HD disks with full displays. I discovered this when I purchased Troy D.C. a few days ago. The B.B. store is in Bay Shore.
vinnie97 09-29-07, 07:52 AM Thanks, Rwestley!

By the way, my format of choice is HD DVD so please be careful with those assumptions. ;) But recent developments (and Lost season 3!) such as these have me considering format neutrality.

I agree, but why not quote the OP instead of rdjam? After all, his response aligns with the title and spirit of the thread. It makes it look as if you don't really dislike local info, just local info that doesn't bear the news you want to hear.
The BBs in my area have a large selection of both, in equally sized displays.
At one, however, I found four open-box Blu-Ray players loosely stacked in the clearance section (2 shown below). Price? Don't know....no interest.

Another of these threads, god stop already!!
My BB in Plymouth Meeting PA has a huge HDDVD section, and only 2 of Blu. Did I take it as Blu going down the drain? no!
A salesman at my store today said the HD DVDs are outselling the Blurays at that store.
A salesman at I overheard at Best Buy said that they are removing Blu-ray to restock VHS.
kevinca1 09-29-07, 09:55 AM WE already have many threads like this we don not need more.
