Is it possible to update the PS3 by downloading the file from Sony's site and burning it to cd or dvd? I'm about to purchase an 80 gig and was just wondering.

You can update your system software by any of the following methods:
System Update »
Update using the PS3™ system's System Update feature.
Update using a PC »
Download update data using a PC and save on storage media* or a USB Mass Storage device. Copy the update data to the PS3™ system's hard disk and perform the update.
*An appropriate USB adaptor (not included) is required to use storage media with some models.
Update using disc media »
Update using update data that is included on a game disc.

Doesn't look like it.

do you have a flash drive? i think you could pretty much get a 64 or 128 meg one for free these days, which is prolly all you need for the ps3 firmware.

You will need more than just a 128. 256 would be the minimum, but I would recommend at least a 512, which is still dirt cheap to find at Wal-mart, less than $20.

Update has to be stored in the proper folder "PS3"\"UPDATE" on your usb drive so that the PS3 can "see" it.
