View Full Version : Help! Red and White only shows up on HDMI
lindafern 09-29-07, 11:10 PM I have a Yamaha 5950 dvd player hooked up hdmi to hdmi to my new Samsung 4661 LCD HDTV. There is no problem with RGB only HDMI. Same on all 3 hdmi inputs. The problem is that the dvd plays ok but the display is only Red and White. I tried another hdmi cable. Same problem. Both cables(different manufacturers) are 3 feet. Hooked up the dvd player to a Vizio LCD and also to a Sony LCD hdmi inputs. No Problem.DVD plays beautifully. Samsung says it needs a new board. Nope. They put that in- same problem. Took dvd player to Best Buy to check out on Samsung 4661 in store.Same problem but, once again, it played fine on Sony LCD in store. They tell me one or the other must be incompatible! I never heard of that.Is that an answer? Please help. Thanks, Linda
Kei Clark 09-29-07, 11:57 PM Linda,
This sounds more like an EDID problem, but it would be helpful if you can state what resolution you are using on your DVD player, and what the TV is reporting as receiving. You may also want to do a search in the LCD-TV forum to see if anyone is reporting similar issues.
lindafern 09-30-07, 01:05 AM Hi Kei, It's an upconverting player to 1080i. I used RGB at first before I got an HDMI cable and it worked fine.Mu upconverting Samsung S145 works fine thru the HDMI. It's just the Yamaha. Thanks, Linda
It's the upconverting to 1080i thru HDMI that seems to be the problem. Thanks for replying. Linda
Drewbert 09-30-07, 01:25 AM I know this sounds weird, but the player is fine, the tv is fine and so is the cable.... Just when you toss them together the sammy freaks out.
Get a new dvd player..... Or use component video
I use to work for BB, and I have ran across this twice... yours is the third....
lindafern 09-30-07, 03:11 AM Thanks. Drove me crazy, but , that apparently is the only solution. Love the Samsung.
Kei Clark 09-30-07, 05:45 PM Have you tried 720p via the Yamaha? Also, when you get the red and white image, have you looked at what resolution the Samsung is reporting, and was it 1080i?
lindafern 09-30-07, 08:55 PM Hi Kei,
Thanks for your advice. I'm going to check that out ASAP and I will come back here to let you know the results.
Linda
lindafern 09-30-07, 11:22 PM Hi Kei,
First the Samsung lnt-4661 is 1080P capable . It is set for 1080I on DVDS. 2)The Yamaha works fine on component thru the Samsung TV. 3)As per your suggestionThe Yamaha HDMI is now set to 1080I. I tried setting it at 720P but I got the same problem and set at 1080I I still have the same problem. The other dvd player a Samsung, seems to be fine. Help.
Linda
Kei Clark 10-01-07, 11:55 PM That is really puzzling, but it doesn't sound like an HDCP or EDID issue.
Whey you have the DVD player with the red and white screen displaying, can you get the Samsung to show that it is indeed seeing 1080i or 720p signal? There should be an info button that can report the input signal resolution.
lindafern 10-02-07, 11:04 PM Hi Kei, Once again Thanks. With the DVD player and TV on, I connected the TV through HDMI. The Info button showed 1920X1080I which is the maximum upconverting level for this DVD player. I hope that's what you meant because that's the only thing I could find that would tell me what you wanted to know.
Also found on the C/NET Audio and Video forum: Samsung LNT-4665F VS. LNT-4661F: the following post which I responded to by asking if the DVD player was replaced with another Yamaha. No answer, yet.:
HDMI ISSUES

Mr Samsung,
the 4665f that I bought has HDMI issues when hooked up to the Yamaha upconvert DVD player that I have. The sceen is magenta when ever I use HDMI. Composite it is fine. I have replaced the cable, and DVD player with no change. The HDMI works great from my cable box in all inputs, but the DVD is pink in all, what can I do to resolve this?
Foxbat121 10-03-07, 06:53 AM HDMI can carry RGB signal or YPbPr signal. It's usually up to player and TV to auto negotiate the proper protocol. It's may be that your TV and player has miscommunication. The player sends one format while TV expects another.
lindafern 10-03-07, 08:02 PM I don't quite understand what you're saying. Do you mean the TV is trying to display 1080i and the upconverting dvd player is sending 720P? The player supposedly upconverts to 1080I. Thanks for replying but what should I do? Linda
Foxbat121 10-03-07, 09:20 PM No. It's likely the DVD player is sending out YPbPr but your TV treat is as RGB signal. Or vice versa. Hence explains the weird color on screen.
Nothing really you can do.
lindafern 10-04-07, 12:31 AM Hi Kei, I rechecked comparing a samsung upconverting (to 1080I) DVD player. IT shows720X480 on component AND 1920X1080 through the HDMI, whereas the Yamaha shows 720X480 on component and 1280X720 on the HDMI. It sounds as if there is a problem with the Yamaha upconverting (to 1080I) and I'm sorry that I gave you the wrong info before. I'm not very smart at times. Thanks again on any further info you may have such as a response to "do I have an issue with Yamaha? That, of course, doesn't explain why the HDMI works on otherLCDs.
Kei Clark 10-04-07, 05:37 PM Linda,
I am more inclined to think that the Samsung is not able to negotiate the proper colorspace, as Foxbat explained. I have seen this on my Sharp with one of my sources, but was able to correct it by using the Sharp menu to choose RGB as the colorspace. If this is not a function provided on the Samsung, I don't think it can be corrected, unless they can somehow upgrade the firmware on the TV on a service call. If I had to find a way to correct this, I would likely replace the DVD player, which would be the least inconvenient solution.
lindafern 10-04-07, 08:04 PM Thanks Kei,
I think I'll just try a different DVD player at this point. The Samsung has the latest software and "One must always have one's BBC ..er, I mean cannot have too many DVD players".
Linda
