View Full Version : PS3's video codec questions
bmaffin13 09-29-07, 10:11 PM Just wondering what kind of videos the ps3 can play. IE: h264, x264, mpeg4, etc
just curious because i have a lot of HD movies and tv shows in various codec's and i want to use them on my ps3. Can't get my tv to recognize HDMI from my computer so i am wanting to play all my 1080p stuff on the PS3.
TIA
RScottyL 09-29-07, 10:37 PM I know it will play MPEG2, AVC-HD
I know it will not play *.TS (transport stream), WMV, WMV-HD

It'll play an MPEG-2 transport stream, but not with AC-3 audio, IIRC.
bmaffin13 09-30-07, 01:53 AM damn, thought I had read somewhere that it played h264. :(
Bummer

It does play certain h264 profiles with certain audio codecs in an mp4 container, but IIRC ac-3 is a no-go in that container, also. The sad part is that it will play h2654 with ac-3, but only from a Blu Ray.
What we need is a good media server that's smart enough to change the container format when needed, rather than transcoding, or only transcoding the audio when required and possible. Using a different container format is simple and takes little to no time.
bmaffin13 09-30-07, 06:11 PM Know of a guide that'll show me how to change the container or anything that i can try?
Search for 'remux'. There's a list somewhere of exactly what formats the PS3 supports in which containers, but I don't remember where I saw it. :(
I've essentially given up for the moment, since I'm running out of disk space and have an Xbox with XBMC to play SD video with, and that thing will play almost anything (except h264, which it doesn't have the CPU power to decode. :()

ffmpeg

Betanumerical 09-30-07, 11:12 PM Lets say I technically have a .vob (MPEG2) file, could i transfer it? and just play it straight up?.
Use DGIndex to demux the audio and video from the vob. Then use Imago Mpeg Muxer to put those in an mpg file. The PS3 natively supports those.

I presume this will have no loss in quailty? also the stuff I have is subtitled, possible?.
No loss in quality but you do lose subtitles.

Anyway I can encode them into the MPEG?
Also on one of my audio sources that mpeg muxing program crashing at 6.2%
canoehead 10-01-07, 12:19 AM DVD Shrink may be able to help.
Betanumerical 10-01-07, 02:59 AM Does anyone have a guide for doing this? I'm having some trouble.
What i need to do
1. Get the subtitles from the .vob
2. Get the audio and video from the .vob
3. Remux the video, audio and subtitles into a file the ps3 can play.
christ this is hard :(
So far, I've got the audio and video. But they won't mux together and I need the subtitles.
The PS3 won't play back the subs unless you burn them into the video. If you're going re-encode the video with the subs, you might as well go to mpeg4 AVC instead of mpeg2.

try Super(c)
it can transcode any video format to any other even Ps3 specific.
here's the link

best of all it's free. ;)

Good program if you have all the codecs installed and a fast machine.
Of Note: Verrrry Sloooooow load times, and interface is a little clunky. Also the website for downloads leaves a lot to be desired.

I've always had problems with mpeg4 AVC and have never been able to get the quailty perfect always had notice blocking not matter what I did. If you have a guide or something I could follow that would be great, what kind of bitrate do you reckon I could get away with?. Its just 720x576 PAL

True.....sorry, I should have specified that to avaoid any confusion.
You will see video, but you will not get audio if it is AC-3.

2500+ is typical for me. But it all depends on the movie, what aspect ratio, framerate and video noise it has.

Thanks, its 4:3 and PAL framerate. Not much if any noise afaik I can tell (Its anime). Im using PS3 Video 9 and FFMPEG crashes at 99%. Any help?. This is from a VOB source.
canoehead 10-01-07, 10:27 PM Maybe run it through DVD Decrypter to strip any protection, and then Handbrake to put into an MP4 ?
And try MeGUI if you're comfortable with a more technical program.

Already done the first part.

I tried MeGUI before but I could never work out a profile that works on the PS3, would you per chance have a link to / have a profile that works on the PS3?.
MeGUI comes with a PS3 profile now.
Betanumerical 10-02-07, 05:30 AM MeGUI comes with a PS3 profile now.
Thanks for that, I've got the video down pat now. I've tried googling but haven't had much success in looking for info on doing subs in H264 and extracting them from a vob file Do you buy any chance know how to do this?
No, I never do hardsubs but maybe someone else knows.
Lets say I technically have a .vob (MPEG2) file, could i transfer it? and just play it straight up?.
Rename the vob file to mpg and it should play. For mpeg ts just remux with TSRemux to ts or m2ts(then rename to ts) and it should play. For h264 ts files I use nero recode (highest quality settings) to encode to mp4 (nero digital AVC) and it works every time.
Betanumerical 10-02-07, 06:58 AM I'm getting lines which look like (are) interlacing, anyone who is profeceint with megui want to tell me how to get rid of them?, the source is 576x720 progressive btw.
You have to analyze the source and pick the correct deinterlacer. It's just something you'll need to experiment with.
flyingdwardo 01-03-09, 11:23 PM I copied the following file types to my usb flash drive:
mpg
vob
mp4
avi
Put the usb drive in the ps3's usb slot. The ps3 did recognize the drive, but when I went to video and selected this drive, it said there were no titles to play.
I thought for sure the PS3 could recognize at least one of these. Any ideas what I can do to fix?
thanks
CRT Dude 01-04-09, 05:36 AM You have to push triangle I think and select display all files.
