I'm considering a Acer PH530 to use with my PS3. Could someone give me advice on whether or not this is a good choice. Are projectors a good idea w/ PS3's?

Right now I'm using a three year old JVC 48" widescreen HD rear projection.

Thanks!

Personally I would go with an HDTV. I have both and prefer my TV for the most part. With a projector it's pretty big, you can have motion sickness (Some ppl) you have to play in the dark, bulbs are expensive too.

I do all my TV/Movie watching and Gaming with a projector. I wouldn't have it any other way. Last time I checked, the bulb for my JVC RS1 was about $300. That's once every nine months to a year. It's a small price to pay for a 123" 1080p set-up.
To each it's own.

I have 2 projectors that I use for gaming and love it. If you have a problem with the image being too large, you can always make it smaller, but you don't have the option to go bigger if you buy a monitor. You could get a nice flat screen around 42 in or for the same price you can have a 100+ in. For me it was an easy decision.

The PS3 looks beautiful on a projector. I thought that blowing the image up so large would take away from it the clarity of the image - but it hasn't in the least. I'm still amazed when I see how nice it looks on a 120" screen.

Are you serious $300 every 9 months to a year? Is that normal?

I've been gaming on a front projector for over 7 years. If you can get a projector to work in your room, I highly recommend it.

It actually depends on how much TV you watch and when the lamp starts to get dim.
I watch A LOT of TV with my family so I can get to the 2000 hour mark rather quickly. If you own a DLP Rear projection TV you have to swap out you lamp as well. LCD and Plasma of course don't.

And depending on what time of day or the light conditions in your room - there's usually several settings for brightness. The brightest setting will burn through your bulbs more quickly. But in the end - it is SO worth it.

I have a Epson CINEMA 400 720p lcd projector and couldn't be happier with it (maybe happier if I had the more expensive 1080p version)

I run HDMI from the PS3 to a Denon 2307 receiver and then HDMI to the Epson. The Epson is very bright which is good for games. The PS3 is also my Bluray and DVD player. It all works like a charm.

When I turn on the PS3 the Epson knows to go to bright mode. When I switch it over to DVD or Directv it than automatically goes to cinema mode which is dark.

I play on an InFocus IN76 720P projector and 110" screen. I sit about 12-13 feet from the screen and I have no issues with it. I can't imagine playing on anything else at this point. And the great thing about FPS games is everyone's heads look like melons which makes shooting all the more easy!! :D

6 hours a day for a year is about 2200 hours. Most projectors do 3000 hours on a single bulb when running in low brightness mode (which is fine in dark environments). I don't know ANYONE in this day and age who has the time, or the will, to watch THAT much TV. If you do, then go ahead and get a plasma (and a life ;)).

I've had a PH530 hooked up to my 360 (will get he PS3 after the price drop) and it looks fantastic. On top of that the bulbs for the PH530 are only around $200.

one of many HD1000U owners here.

I game with my ps3, 360, and Wii on my projector and even the Wii looks great. Watch Blu Rays and HD-DVD's on it, too.

I'll never go back. I have a plasma for regular TV watching but I've gotten to the point that if there's something I want to watch and it's in HD, I'm heading downstairs to watch it at 115".

Don't steal my thunder! I've had my JVC-RS1 for about 3 months and I already have 800 hours on my lamp.
I have a life, and so does my family, but it's on for an hour in the morning, and from 6 to 11/12 almost every night watching TV, Movies, or Gaming with my entire family. We are a TV family and the primary TV is the projector. Plasma is the best technology out there at this point, but why would I want to watch TV on a small plasma. For the cost of a decent 1080p plasma, you could get a GREAT projector/screen combo.

I have a Sony VPL-VW50 projector with my PS3, and I think I would cry if I had to play on a normal sized TV again.:D

I have around 1300 hours on my lamp, I installed it December. Is that a lot? I'm not sure if thats normal or I need to get a life.:D

I think that most everyone on this site "Needs to get a Life" if we go by how much time we spend watching TV, Movies, and Gaming. Not to mention the audiophiles that love music, and spend a lot of time doing just that.
1300 hours in 9 months is pretty damn good IMO. That's only about 145 hours a month. My "Family" and I are on pace for 200-250 hours a month. :D

For the original poster, go check out the projector forum here on AVS. There is a lot of info on projectors and screen. There is also a Do It Yourself area that will show you a way to make a screen for less than $50. That's what I have been using for the last 3 months. I just installed my new VuTec 123" screen about 20 minutes. WARHARK on the 123 is like shooting fish in a barrel. Like BMC posted, everyones head is the size of a pumpkin. :p

After you watch tv/movies or play video games on any HD projector with a screen over 100" diagonal, it is near impossible to go back to regular tv.

Panasonic 700 and 106" screen in my basement theater.

There's also the portability factor...I go on a golf trip twice a year and for the last 2 trips I've brought my projector and ps3 for movies/games at night. All you need is a white painted wall and you can take it with you with a small footprint (takes up less room in the van than a set of golf clubs). Not possible with any other hdtv setup.
The only time I felt the need to turn the bulb up to bright is when I moved the projector for the super bowl and had it taking up a whole wall (10' ceilings)- football on a 15' screen is something to behold. I've had my projector for about a year and have yet to pass 1000 hours on the bulb, so I'm figuring replacement every 2 years or so...And after 4 years it may be time to upgrade to the latest and greatest projector anyway.

Just as a check, I would call around and see who has spare lamps for that Acer in stock. Call and verify, do not go by "in stock" notes on web sites. We had a hell of a time finding lamps for several Acer projectors we have (different model), and it took us a couple months to find some and get them delivered.

I use a projector as well with my PS3 and it's great. While I could play games on a smaller screen, movies on a 50" feels like living in Hobbiton :P

How does the image quality compare to a HD front projector vs. a lets say a 50" HD rear projector?
Does it look grainy?
Is the picture as sharp?
How are the colors? Do they look washed out?

Thats another thing, if you think you're going to use your projector then go back and watch a regular tv you will be very disappointed. I have a 65' dlp myself, and when i looked at a 50' SXRD the other day in the store i was appalled by how small it was. :D I'm sure this feeling would be even worse with a projector.

That's how I ended up with a projector. I had a 65" Mits Diamond, and I just couldn't bear to go to a smaller plasma, and I just couldn't justify spending 8K on a 65" plasma, or 10-12K on a 1080p plasma.

I'm in the exact same boat. I have a 42" panny plasma for casual tv watching, but for gaming, movie watching, and sporting events the HD1000U on a 108" screen is used.

Here is some Resistance on it.

I have my PS3 hooked up to a Benq W9000 1080P projector with a 14 foot wide screeb (2.35:1 For movies and 16X9 for HDTV and Gaming). Not to mention, full 7.1 Surround

Once you play on a Huge screen, you will never want to go back to anything Smaller

Only reason I watch the Plasma downstairs is because the wife doesn't want to watch regular TV in the theater.

Thanks again! I just picked up a Acer PH530. This is my first projector. I'm looking for a screen now. But even on a white painted drywall it looks great! I'm going to play a little "Resistance, Fall of Man" in a bit...sweet ;)

check out the DIY forum here for screens, as well. It's died down recently due to some politics as well as reaching the point of diminishing returns as the DIY screens have equaled, and passed, the retail screens in some ways.

I use a Wilsonart Designer White laminate board and couldn't be happier.

I just picked up some blackout cloth at a local fabric store and built a frame for mine. I did just get my screen, but I did this to figure out what size I wanted to go.
