Hello, I have a fairly old Hitachi 50UX15K projection set. It was my families old set. In the back of the manual, it says it has 900 lines of horizontal resolution. However, there are only S-video, composite, and coaxial connections. Is there any way to take advantage of this? (like run 480P?)
Looking at the block diagram for the set, Could I manually add an RGBHV connection or similar? Sounds unlikely.

Afraid not. Analog chassis. And inputs are all NTSC 480i, only. Also:
Hor. out is 63.5 usec(15.75 kHz) per scan & Vert out is 16.7 millisec(60 HZ) = 16.7mSec/63.5uSec= 263 lines per field. This being 480i, =x2 = 525 lines total (NTSC 480i).
Don't mean to be a smarty, but I like this. I think the 900 lines has to probably do with a dynamic focus setting, or something, that makes the scan lines twice as sharp.

In olden days "lines of horizontal resolution" was a big selling point, the more the better.
That spec refers to how many vertical lines the set should be capable of resolving across the screen (think in terms of a picket fence). It was an easy spec to fudge as there were many variables, and the maximum horizontal resolution for broadcast tv is significantly less than 900 lines, something like half that actually. SD dvd has the highest available horizontal resolution of any standard definition source, something a little over 500 lines.
