Ok, I'm going to try to go in depth with this issue as much as I can, because I'm tech handicapped. So, I have a Olevia 227v model and from my understanding, QAM tuner allows you to view HD channels without a box for free. I'm pretty sure that this TV has QAM, I've heard many people say it does. Plus, when I search for channels on it I get digital channels but a "no picture message". BTW, my provider is Comcast. The funny thing is my friend has Comcast as well and a 32' Vizio with QAM and he is able to view some channels in HD without a box. We both have basic-around 100 channel- cable with no boxes whatsoever. If it helps, BOTH our parents have Comcast Digital Cable in our houses so I don't know why I wouldn't get any HD channels at all. If you help, Thanks for taking your time to write up a response. Much appreciated!

Use either the Comcast HD box or an old school UHF antenna in your attic/ on top of your TV. You can connect that antenna to your TVs antenna in connector.

I don't have an HD box, my parents have a 2 digital cable boxes between the two of them. Also, I don't think I have one of those antenna's either. But, why can my friend get HD on his TV(same provider,no box either and QAM) and we live like a couple miles from each other?

This website http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Specifications-of-OLEVIA-27-2-Series-LCD-HDTV-227V/sem/rpsm/oid/163701/rpem/ccd/productDetailSpecification.do#tabs indicates that the TV you are referring to has a ATSC tuner (over the air), not QAM tuner. If you search Google for your TV and QAM tuner another poster in another forum stated there was no QAM tuner.

Well when I search for channels it does find digital channels, so doesn't that mean it has QAM? Also, I've read some posts here saying the people think it has QAM.

I do not own the TV myself. I did another search and a different poster said it does have a QAM tuner and if you truly are finding digital channels, it may have it. I have a cable card on a Panasonic and before I installed the card, the hi-def channels were like 85-103, 85-104 (84 dash 104 as an example) or something like that. I had to use the dash button on the remote to access the HD chanels. It took a long time to find the channels. Also, I assume your friend does not have a cable card and thus the channels are in the clear.

Im 99% sure that TV does not have a QAM tuner.

Go to antennaweb.org and input your zip to see what Digital local over the air channels are available in your area. Now if your lucky you may be able to get a small indoor antenna and be able to get your locals in HD.

The Olevia website shows the user manual and on page 57 it indicates that there is only a NTSC and ATSC tuner. http://www.olevia.com/manuals/227V_English_User_Manual.pdf. I think dgordo is correct.

I am getting digital channels when I search, they just come up black and say no picture. Also, the remote that came with the TV doesn't even have a dash button like you said. It has a "." button. If indeed my TV doesn't have QAM, could I buy a tuner or is it not worth the money?

You will get digital channels because your tv has an ATSC tuner. ATSC = digital. Now whether or not your signal strength is strong enough to keep a signal without breakup is another question. That's why you were advised to go to antennaweb.org. You should be able to check your signal strengths in the TV menu somewhere.

The "." signifies the digital channel. For example 3 would be the analog (NTSC) station, 3.1 would be the digital (ATSC) station. And then if any affiliates multi-cast they will be numbered 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, for example.

So your saying my issue has nothing to do with QAM.

If your TV doesn't have QAM then you are correct, your issue has nothing to do with QAM.

Thanks everybody I found my problem. I'm so dumb. I had my tuner going through my VCR than to the TV so I wasn't getting any HD. I did it directly so now I'm getting some HD channels!
