Now that you have gone to HDM that is either Blu Ray or HD DVD do you still buy SD DVD's? and if so how often?

My wife picks up kids movies at walmart every now and then but I find myself replacing my kids animated movies like the polar express and open season with HD versions..

I voted Blu only; but that's because there wasn't a dual-format choice. I haven't bought any SD DVD's since getting my PS3; but now that I have an Xbox360 AO I have bought some HD DVD's for titles not available on BD.

At least 70, and I've only been Hi-def since spring.
I've only bought about 18 HD titles, I have 22, I own 1500,00 SD DVDs.

I'm not going to pass up some great obscurity because it's not HD.

picked up a few WWII documentaries from Frys that were between $5 to $10...I always been a sucker for videos with F4U Corsairs or carriers/battleships plowing through the Pacific...

but no non high movie purchases since buying my PS3 on launch day last year...

I've definitely throttled back on DVD purchasing -- but haven't made up for the difference with HDM:(

With recently released popular DVD titles being available used at Netflix for $5.99 it is hard to resist buying those for the kids. Before HDM we used to pick up recent released adult (meaning non-kid:-) DVDs at Best Buy or Target to watch that night. With HDM, my pain threshold is around $20, so we occasionally pick up catalog BD or HD DVD titles at Fry's. If a new HD release has a great review I will order or even pre-order it from Amazon. The net-net is that I am buying far fewer new titles than I used to. I am doing Netflix rentals much more with HDM since we get HD for the same price as DVD. I even increased my plan from 3 to 4 discs out at a time.

Well I'm into Asian horror and I've bought 8-10. Although, with Tartan going Blu-Ray exclusive that base may be covered now. Impatiently waiting for Oldboy.:D

I stopped buying DVD's a full year before I bought my HD DVD player.

I've bought dozens of DVDs, I'm not really sure how many, since I got into HD. Most of what I want just isn't available in either format.

0 titles but if I were to want something unavailable on HDM I probably would pick up the SDDVD version.

Flawed poll. You need an option for 'No, I only buy if it is in one of the high def formats'.

Just a some. Id say 2 a month vs before HDM which was 10..
But many are the SD box sets that may never see HDM.

Just the one, 'The History Boys'.

It was only £7, and I didn't think it'd benefit from a high def release - certainly not the extra £10+ I'd have had to pay.

BTW, it's a smashing film.

Should be a dual option so I didn't vote. Since the inception of HD DVD, I have not bought any SD DVD's.

It's been less then 5, I know that.

I couldn't resist a $2 film that I liked (online overstocked sale)

And one came with a CD I bought.

Those 2 I remeber but I know it's under 5 total.

Not that I've seen more then 40 movies on Blu Ray I know I won't be buying any SDVD unless it's a concert video that I don't think will come to HD for some reason.

Was feeling nostalgic and just had to have a copy of Watership Down. Everything else for the past year has been on HD DVD.

Wow, I'm surprised so many people have stopped buying DVDs completely. Did you guys buy many DVDs before or are you only a fan of the big blockbusters type films that get released on hdm?

I've bought dozens of DVDs since getting my A1 and PS3. If a title is available on hdm, I buy it that way, but probably 3/4 of what I want isn't out on hdm and at least half of that will probably not come out for many years if ever, so of course I'll buy it on dvd.

CRFTonly,

My DVD collection was about 600. I've been selling back titles that I can't remember why I bought or things I re-buy on High Def Media for on average about $3 each.

I bought lots of DVD and at first I still thought upconverted DVD was fine but after many films in HD it's all I want now. Selection has got to the point where my favorite films may not be available but plenty of stuff I want to watch is.

Flawed poll. You need an option for 'No, I only buy if it is in one of the high def formats'.Yes, this was a bit frustrating, since it forces many to pick sides. Given the title, it should have been non-denominational, so as to encourage more releases in HDM in general.

However, that being the case, I pick my preference "No unless it's on HD DVD".

My bad I did put a only if its not available in hi def , but maybe I should have put a I'm a dual format supporter who doesn't buy sddvd's?

It's a price/performance issue for me. If I can get an SD DVD for $8 or less I will. Movies I REALLY want I'll get in High-Def. I stopped buying new-release DVD's a while ago, prior to buying a Blu-Ray player. I'll only replace a few existing titles, mostly Pixar stuff when it comes out.

I bought "Letters From Iwo Jima", and, while nice, wasn't stunning. That tempered my enthusiasm a bit, although I knew it to be true that not all High-Def transfers are greated equal. (I think it was the muted colors Clint had it filmed in, not any transefer issue in this particular case, but you see what I'm getting at.) Casino Royale, on the other hand looks really good, and it's not a Tier 0.

Like I said, if I find a movie I'm interested in on standard DVD for $8 or less I'll get it. I've seen some retail outlets sell some for as little as $5.50. That's about the same as a rental or On-Demand viewing. A high-def title at $30 or so has to be something I really want.

Currently, I just have Blu-Ray, but will get an XA2 as soon as funds allow.

I haven't bought a DVD for well over a year before getting my 360 add-on, since I knew it was inevitable. PS3 followed a month later.

I still buy a lot of SD DVDs, mainly for blind-buys and stuff that may not be 'necessary' to have in HD. Usually my rule is that if the SD version is half the price or less of the HD version, and if it isn't a big-budget action/war movie, then I'll just get the SD one. This basically limits my purchase of SD DVDs to those $9.99 and under, but there's still a ton of great stuff that can be had at that price.

I purchase used rentals fairly regularly on sales (four for $30 for example.) I only buy HD titles if I have high confidence of liking the film -- that typically translates into films I already enjoy. I consider HD films to be generally too much of an investment to risk making mistakes on.

I quit buying SD DVD two years ago (in anticipation of HDM). I still check out DVDs from the library or rent or create DVDs from a PC TV Tuner card capture.

Lots of great catalog titles available for $5.00 at WM and Target.

It's the movie %$#@ . . . not the resolution!

I did my part to get Jurassic Park on HD DVD...

I purchased it on DVD(The 3 disc set). I knew the minute I caved and got it, it'd end up being released in HD forcing a double dip. Hasn't yet though but here's hoping ;)

Other than TV shows, I really dont buy DVD's anymore.

I only buy SD DVD when it is not available in HD-DVD. For instance, I have bought Batman the Animated Series Box Set and Supernatural: Season 2.

I still buy lot's of Standard DVD's... overall there is such a small % of titles that are also available on HDM. Additionally, right now SD DVD's are a TOTAL buyers market, you can get four to five titles for the cost of one HDM. For instance, I chose to buy the standard def copies of Knocked Up and Heroes... saved myself over $50 between the two (both were blind buys) and I am happy with my decision after watching both. I still love HDM but I am not ready to stop buying SD anytime soon.

Most kids movies are not available in HD. Even the ones that are I buy in SD because I need to be able to play it in the van and on a portable player when we travel.

Also, there some kids videos I feel bad enough wasting $10 on. I would feel even worse spening $20 for HD. My general rule of thumb is that if it says Disney or Barbie, its gonna be SD.

I have the Toshiba HD A2 and my SD collection numbers around 150+. I have maybe a dozen HDDVDs, which includes the 3 free ones from VE (and the 3 from Planet Earth). I am waiting on my 5 free ones from Toshiba and picked up a couple this weekend (that I do not own in SD). I will replace some SD discs, but I may hold back to see what happens to the price of Samsung's Dual Format player. If I am smart, and patient, I will wait until mid to late 08 and pick up a dual format player at a much more reasonable price. I do not have the patience for this format war. I enjoy the HDM format, will wait to upgrade audio in a year or two, after that issue matures a bit further toward resolution. I do not have a dog in this fight - BR/HD-DVD, I just do not give a rat's a**. Just make it easier for the consumer (and cheaper).

I buy both HD and BD, but never blind; the price is too high for pot luck. It has to be a movie that I know is worthy of multiple repeat viewing, and that is substantially cleaner than the SD version.

For a lot of movies I just don't care enough about them to pay a premium and buy them in SD only because, for the price (£3 to £6), they are cheaper than Blockbuster's late fees.

So far about 20 HD and BD, and several hundred SD.

How many SD DVDs do you have? Your comma is in a strange place. If it's 150,000 SD DVD's watching 8 a day it will take you over 50 years to watch them all.

Back on topic...I buy SD DVD when it isn't on HD DVD. I want to watch Blu ray and the format war develop more before I invest in a third format...As I wait I won't be holding my breath so I don't turn blue prematurely;)

I buy anything I can on BD, but I still have to buy a few SD DVDs for my wife.

I don't foresee a release of all six seasons of 'Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman' or 'Good Times' on BD anytime soon. ;)

Being an anime fan I tend to buy a good number of anime DVDs (about 40 a month) since there are so few titles available for HD media. I think I have all of the available domestic titles (Freedom 1 and 2, Honneamise, Tekkon Krinket) and am planning on buying almost any domestic anime on high def while there are fewer than 4 released a month. Here is a link to a column that hosted my standard def anime collection (about 1400 DVDs) couple months ago.
