View Full Version : 2 usb ports vs 4 usb ports
CDRACING 10-01-07, 08:57 AM Just wondering how much of a hit to the ps3 if they do drop the amount of usb ports on the new sku ps3 (if their will be one). What does everyone use their usb ports for now? I'm guess 1 possibly for rf adaptor for harmony remotes and such and one possibly to use a wireless keyboard, in this case 2 would be enough. What are other options that would take more than 2?
P.S Should have stated 6 usb ports vs 2 usb ports in title sorry for the wrong specs.
Mike LS 10-01-07, 09:25 AM Doesn't matter does it? Just plug in a cheap USB hub and expand all you need.
Conspiracy* 10-01-07, 10:14 AM I use mine for the portable HD I've never used, my BT headset, and the two contoller chargers. I could get by with two because I never use the HD or the BT headset.
todrigo 10-01-07, 10:41 AM For the first time in recorded history I had all four of my USB ports in use at the same time. I was charging a controller, chargine a BT Headset, playing music off the Ipod, and tranferings some pics from a usb thumb drive.
CDRACING 10-01-07, 10:45 AM haha your right I never thought about the usb hub lol. Expecting to get a PS3 hopefully by the end of the year. The card readers really wouldnt be missed if they were gone but the usb's was what I was concerned about if the wifi will still be included if not then the lower sku wouldn't be the route I would go for sure. I really can't wait to make the purchase lol weren't for the wife I would prolly already have it hooked up to my HT setup :). I've even thought about going ahead and getting it and letting her just notice it on the media tower lol. May not be a great idea.
FrankJ.Cone 10-01-07, 11:33 AM I use one USB port. I use it to connect the controller for recharging and updates and I occasionally back up my PS2 saves since they delete now and then all on their own. Hell a second is never required much less 3 extra.
I use one to charge controller and one for my old wired headset. I use the other two for the PS2 controller adapters when I have some friends over to play warhawk or NHL 08. I like having 4 USB.
I use 1 for my KB/Mouse, 2 for charging controllers/PSP usage I don't use the 4th one.
bdoyledimou 10-01-07, 07:50 PM Where is the PsEYE going to plug in.. or is it going to use BT?
lets see.. Controller charger, Headset charger, Eyetoy, keyboard, mouse... whoops already to many connections.
I just bought a hub to plug everything into already though so no biggy.
Mind you if they are dropping the price by another $100 there is going to be more then just 2 usb ports taken away.

Thats how i feel, i use more then 2, but a hub would make no difference to me, my setups not easy on the eyes as it is.
Does the PS3 have drivers for the hub? Is it plug and play? I don't need it, just curious.

No drivers needed for a USB hub.
nuclear_eclipse 10-01-07, 09:23 PM A USB hub is transparent to the host system due to the way the USB spec was created. The only restriction is that any device that needs more than a tiny bit of power really needs to be on a powered USB hub, or else all four (or more) devices are splitting the normal power from the USB port. This means you would need a powered USB hub in order to charge your controllers (or other power hungry devices), which means you also need an extra power outlet, a scarce commodity in my apartment.
canoehead 10-02-07, 11:22 AM My wife would miss the lack of the card reader - it is one of her favourite items (she is a demon with the Canon Digital Rebel Xt). Of course, she doesn't game. . .
joe_six_pack 10-02-07, 12:04 PM extra add-on crap becomes a PITA imo. I'd rather just get the full package and be done with it.
I understand that others approach the issue differently. Nothing wrong with that.
2 or 4 USB ports doesn't matter to me. I just wish there was at least one on the back.

Amen. I've been wanting those ever since I got the PS3, for hard drive and kb/m dongle.
jkcheng122 10-02-07, 04:16 PM one for charging controller and another for IR adapter for ppl using ps3 as bd player and use a universal remote. i don't think more than 2 ports is necessary, the IR adapter is the only one i permanently use.
