Which Games Have Beaten You?

Just curious to know what games (if any) you have not been able to beat, no matter how many times you tried to get through them. We can keep this PS3 specific, if you’d like. Alternately, you can also post what you think has been the PS3's toughest game so far.

I know where my vote would go! Yes, this post may have something to do with my inability and utter lack of luck to finish first in the level 4 Raingod buggy race in Motorstom!! Holy jumping Jebus, Batman!! Going in I had a 100% success rate in beating games...sure there have been challenges (Mario Sunshine comes to mind, as does the first Metroid game for the Cube) but given a half hour to an hour or so, I’ve generally been able to finish off a tough level or take down a tough boss. The final boss of Starfox Adventures was especially trying, but I eventually took him down. (Think having to aim at 6 moving targets while button mashing the fire button....not fun!)

My personal story continues where I had left Motorstorm on the shelf for 4-5 months while I worked my way up the ranks in RfoM. Couple weeks ago I decided to pick Motorstorm back up again, had kinda forgotten about it, and was glad to know I still had about half the races to go. It was THEN that I made my first COLOSSAL mistake: I downloaded the patch upgrade! You know, the one that removed the boost exploit. (The messed up part is, I KNEW it would remove the boost exploit cheat!)

The first few races were fine. Most of them I finished first place the 2nd or third time. Bah, who needs infinite boost, I scoffed! Then I got to the last couple races of level 3. Suddenly it took me maybe 8-10 times to finish first. And before I knew it...Wow, it took me 12 times to win with the motorcycle on Sidewinder!! :p

Then level four. Ah, level four. Good old level four. I think it was around the second race that I started having thoughts of committing giddy acts of rage against my stupid f*&%ing controller!! But I swore a little, repeatedly, and persevered. That is until I reached the buggy race on Raingod. Brace yourself for this...One hundred and seventy-nine races later...best I can finish is second!! 4 times!! (Yes, I was keeping track in a little note pad.)

Now I know what you’re thinking: Is this guy a complete friggin’ noob, or what?!?! And I might just be. Raingod buggies has reduced me to a whimpering, crying baby, and I’m not ashamed to admit it. Ok, maybe a little ashamed. Let me just say that if I had the boost exploit, I’d have probably beaten this race within 10-15 times. Infinite boost from that one sharp, hooking turn before the last straight stretch would no doubt be very useful. As it is now...it’s a disaster with VERY limited boost! The A.I. are maniacs if they can catch up to you, and will make your life miserable. And unbearable. And then there's the weird sh!t that always happens when I'm about to win: Have been 1st within 2 seconds from the finish line a number of times only for the buggy behind me to bump/nudge/graze my back tire, exploding me in the process...to one buggy actually landing ON TOP of me at the end...to the 1st place car jamming on his brakes and swerving across in front of me....to bouncing a barrel onto the buggy beside me and watching it ricochet back in front of me causing me to spin out helplessly INCHES away from the finish line. By the time I recover, I finish 11th. :) (Yes, that's last.)

Now I know there have been a couple guys from AVS that have beaten this track without the boost exploit. Avarice and Dogdoctor come to mind. However, I’m thinking that even if they didn’t intend to use the exploit, they may have used it a little inadvertently. At least that’s what I’m telling myself. Otherwise I think I’d fall into the fetal position and never get back up. Fortunately, my wife bought me the Marvel game for my birthday (I loved the other Marvel games in the “series” so I’m really looking forward to it....even though it’s been out months and months ago. I might need to seek psychiatric help and medication before I even THINK to attempt Raingod again.

How about you? Any games you just couldn’t beat? And which PS3 game do you think has been the toughest so far? (Bearing in mind the post-boost exploit in Motorstorm. :p)

Mark me down for Motorstorm, too. Not being a racing game guy in the first place, the level of difficulty that comes on that last ticket is insane. I still had a blast with that game (and actually need to fire it up again as it's been a while), but the latter events on the final ticket are pretty much impossible.

I also have yet to get past the last level of GRAW 2, though I only played it once. Need to finish that puppy off!

Never finsished the SP of Motorstorm either. I guess I don't mind as I'd rather play online, though I did want to unlock all the cars.

Blast Factor: the sixaxis can be good in some games, this game however I hate it it with a passion as I can't consistantly pull off the move and I got sick of jerky the controller around like a spazz. If they had the option to turn the motion move to some button I'd be happy. Mutant Storm Reloaded this game is not.

"I'm not worthy, I'm not worthy!" Congrats, BIG TIME! I just don't think I've got 3 weeks in me...no, I KNOW I don't have 3 weeks in me...so I move on. There's a cool cheat code I found that lets you unlock all the cars and races....and give you a giant helmet head, so that's gonna have to do for me.

As for the second part of what you said, about playing with your kids on your lap. My 3 year-old was just doing a hard puzzle, and...well, she got a little frustrated and...um...may have said...sh!t. Once or twice. Gonna have to watch myself better. Or lock them down in the basement when I play! :o

Just off the top of my head.....the original Tomb Raider. My buddy had PS1 and I had N64. He got this when it came out and we played it religiously through that summer. This is when you actually had to get to a "save point" to save and they were always after some rediculous jump. Anyways we got to the last boss but saved right before with low health. We couldn't beat it for weeks and then gave up for awhile. Then his memory card got erased by his little brother. I still contemplate to this day going out and getting it for like $2 and beating the damn thing.

Man... That was fun read, and thee game is Amazing!! I can relate to the frustrating parts you're mentioning during your lovley time with the game ;)

What I came to learn with this game, and thank god for no cables... Is to really get into it... Sure you might be swearing like a SOB, but its all you got. :D

Just pay the most attention to the last couple of races. I am in a process of beating the whole game + the expansion...

Talk about some intense races. Dog is a great competitor! We raced many times... You should consider cruising with us sometime, more like a cruise rather than a intense race.

Edit: Oh and I forgot, the game I tend to get pissed at is F1. Talk about way to long to do anything... Damn that tuning, and all those sleezy racers :P

Kess,

4th level ticket buggies on RGM: 4 tries on RGM today - 20 mintues.:D

2nd ( by a hundreth of second), 2nd, 6th, 1rst (time of 5:19.44) was in fifth coming up the last ramps to home. 1rst and second swung wide on the last 2 corners and I hugged them 2nd place (5:19.77) 3rd (5:19.80)

So here is how I ran it - and its all about the finish on the third lap as I died off the cliff on the 3rd lap on the very first corner pushing me to 9th.

Coming into the hairpin hug to the left side of the track - not on the wall but close - air for the point of the hairpin and Brake hard (not e-brake) and cut the hairpin by a fraction. If you are lucky there will be some cars to help carry you round the bend. Boost to pick up steam but essentially only accelerate off the 2 drop ledges and be sure to get over and hug the right rock wall (they will try to pass and you will scrape them). Then hit the up ramps on the left side - not to close as you want to have them try to pass you and scrape on the rock. You should be boosting like a freak to stay at "top" speed. You should make a B-line for the short cut (you won't take it) as straight as you can while fighting with the other cars (you could be in first, and then drop to 2nd or 3rd; but more likely you will be chasing someone). Now here is what I remember - they will always take the last corner wide to give you a window. Take it - hug the rock on the right side and corner - no reason to use e-brake in buggy. You could come a little wide on the landing and then come hard to the right again and hug the wall. Boost your @ss off. You should slip on in for 1rst. If you need to blow up for the win...it will rocket you forward faster than the other cars...but you have to time it right that you don't land short.

You can do it, I know you can.

Edit: Oh, and for those that think I'm a good racer - you should see the folks I race with. Damn it would make you sick.

Good luck Smokes....I beat the expansion in about 2.25 hrs and it subsequently vanished from my Hard Drive - I think it's tied to the account you download it on (I did the share thing and then deleted the un-needed user and there it went. Sigh...well here's to a faster finish.

Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!!

No, no no...Your 4 attempts to get first has upset me more than enough for one day. And that coming from the guy who PM'd me today telling me to move on!! Bas!ard! :p

You know what...I almost don't believe you. I know you're not lying, but I still don't believe you. It's a contradiction I'm more than happy to live with. It's just not right. It's REALLY not right that I demolished you in that on-line race the other day, and I STILL can't seem to beat Raingod!

Man, life isn't fair.

Guitar Hero 2 for me. No matter what, I can't pass "Freebird" on Expert. I've got all but six five-star finishes on Expert difficulty and still can't beat freakin "Freebird." Been trying for months now, and I just can't do it. My wrist aches just thinking about it.

p.s. I gave up on Motorstorm pretty quickly. Not out of difficulty, but boredom.

+1 on this one.

We were 87% done with GT 4 and a girl walked by and tripped over the controller cord and knocked the PS2 onto the ground.

Lap 98 of a 100 lap endurance race.

Erased all memory from the game.

I'm not sure if my buddy has actually forgiven her yet...this was 3 years ago.

Don't give up on the buggies on Rain God Mesa. That one took me hours to win. Try different buggies on that one. The Super Jester was very fast, but got bounced by the others easily. Another buggy was pretty slow and had a hard time keeping up with the pack. I forget what I ended up using. You're almost there if you've gotten as close as you have. Now you just need to combine your good race with the luck needed to win. I think I may have had a harder time on the ATV race on Coyote Rage on a later ticket. That one's in the dark and I could barely see in some sections. It's a torture test for an LCD display. Won every race except for the last ATV race on Tenderizer which I got 2nd, but at least I got the end credits to roll after winning the final race.

The first game that made my cry like a little girl was an old SNES game called Zombies Ate My Neighbors. There was this level with giant spiders that spit cobwebs at your feet and you had to use a weed whacker to escape. Problem was I would always run out of weed whacker ammo and I was a sitting duck to the baby spiders. Yes, I got my butt kicked by baby spiders! I never ended up beating that game and it still haunts my to this day.

For the PS3, there is a terrorist hunt level in R6V that has 70 terrorists! How anyone can kill 70 terrorist without dying is beyond me. To make matter worse, the level is dark and you have to go into this run down building with many rooms and a second floor. I tried it a few times, but gave up quickly. Serenity now!

I managed to do that one, but "Play With Me" on Expert on Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks The '80s crushed my spirit. It finishes off with a long series of nasty solos, and it doesn't even provide enough star phrases to allow a second dose of star power to get you through them.

GH1 & 2 were smart enough to leave a star power path that you could stumble through while halfway BSing the solos on the final songs on Expert, but the '80s expansion doesn't think you deserve that courtesy. And it's especially funny because it's easy as hell to 5-star almost all the other songs on Expert in Rocks The '80s... :(

Alien : Ressurection for the Playstation was one of the most difficult FPS I have EVER played. I still haven't beat it and every couple years I whip it out and try again. It is an EXCELLENT game, however - the atmospher is genuinely scary and nerve-wracking. It's a little dated but well worth it.
The original Soul Blade for Playstation made me throw the controller many times.

Ace Combat 5, on the ps2, defeated me. One mission you had to rescue your female squad member who was downed, by protecting the rescue chopper. You start off on one end of the map and have to shoot down like five planes and I guess I was never quick enough. Something about that mission made me think I was making it too hard when it was probably simple, but no matter what I tried I couldn't beat it.

I still have that game (only ps2 game I kept) but my memory cards were lost in a move a couple years ago so I'd have to start over.

Hope you don't mind a 360'er jumping in here. I like this thread.

Been awhile since a game has beaten me, but off the top of my head, I could never beat:

1) The first Castelvania. I forget which boss I couldn't make it past, but I gave up. Of course, I was like 10 or so at the time. It'd probably be easy now.

2) Perfect Dark. I just couldn't get past the last level.

3) Riven (the sequel to Myst). I got stuck somewhere and couldn't figure out what to do. Of course, back then I didn't have all this internet stuff to draw on, and didn't want to cheat by using a guide, so I just gave up. Plus the whole "pull a switch here and it makes a subtle change 5 miles away that you have to spend the next week trying to find" gameplay wasn't that appealing in the first place.

4) Leisure Suit Larry Goes Looking For Love (in Several Wrong Places): Again, I got stuck somewhere towards the end and couldn't figure out what to do.

Hope you don't mind a 360'er jumping in here. I like this thread.

I posted on the 360 board a few days ago. It was so traumatic! It's like a foreign country: They do things differently there. But not really. At all. In the end, no one asked for my passport, took away my travel tube of toothpaste or, or made me take off my shoes and put them through an X-Ray machine. There might have been trouble, otherwise! :p

That last part made me laugh. Kinda reminded me of a couple puzzles in the Prince of Persia game series. Find your way to the top floor of the castle, aim a light beam at a mirror 6 flights away, hope it reflects somewhere, go down and check.....nope....turn it to hit a mirror on the bottom floor, hope it hits something that opens a door, go down and check....nope, the top light beam must be wrong, climb ALL THE WAY back up again...

You make a good point about the internet. I have NO IDEA what I'd have done without the myriad of game walk-throughs sometimes. For instance, there's absolutely no way I would have found all of the hundreds of hidden weapons updates in the current Metroid series without the interent. Seriously, you would literally have to shoot every wall in the hundreds of miles of the game! Yeah, no! :p

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on NES. If I was fortunate enough to still have 3 out of 4 of the turtles by the time I got to the turtle van stage I would be happy. But, there was one part where you had to jump over a gap to get the rope and hook. Every time I would jump, run, or anything, the head of the turtle would hit the ceiling and I'd drop down to the lower level, only to have to re-fight all the enemies back to the upper level of the building (rinse and repeat).

The other was Top Gun for the NES. I could get through the first two stages without a problem, but then I'd come to the desert level and I'd get taken out by one of the hundred SAM sites or so. If I could make it past that, then the boss would end up getting me.

And oh yeah, never finished a GT entirely. Waaayyy too much time. They are a blast, but sometimes it gets way to boring when you drive a 20 lap race for half an hour, and you aren't actually racing, just driving because you are so far ahead (though the stock Yaris rome challenge in GT4 was amazingly hard)

That kinda reminds me of the mercenaries level in the last Resident Evil game. I did beat all the levels (took a week or two) but it was the most frightening thing I've ever "had to do" in a video game. Wave upon wave of "zombies" (I know they weren't zombies, but I'm too lazy to google it) and you've gotta not only stay alive, you've got to get a certain amount of points, in a limited amount of time. All with pretty limited ammo. The only thing not limited was my fear! :p

The first level, the village, was probably the scariest. Man, you're weapons just sucked, and the enemies just keep coming! (Give me 70 terrorists any day! lol) And just when you think you might be able to make it through, you hear the chainsaws firing up! :o Those hooded chainsaw women made me p!ss my pants!! :p The giant hooded chainsaw men on the final level were even worse!

Yeah, glad I somehow made it through. I try not to think about it now. Still makes me shudder.

The first game I really remember not beating was Ultima III for the Commodore 64. Talk about old-school. When your character was killed it was really killed. You couldn't just load from your last save point. If you did, the character would still be dead!
I played for months building up my characters to the Max levels, made it through all the maze-like dungeons and then died steps from the end of the game. Steps away!!!

I never touched it again.

Can you imagine if current gen games were like that, too? Every time you died in RFoM, you went right back to the start! Or how about Motorstorm?! Say you didn't place in the top 3, you went back to the first race! NIGHTMARE!! I can't even begin to picture the horror of having to go through ALL the other races to get to level 4 Raingod, only to finish 10th.

191 TIMES!!!
:p

Ridge Racer 7 (and DiRT to some lesser extent) beat me not because they are hard but because they give me terrible motion sickness. Sucks to be old.

I might go back to DiRT one of these days as it seems to be only some of the tight twisting rally races that do it so I maybe I can play if I keep it to short sessions or change the view perhaps.

Other that that, if the games don't suck I usually try to finish them.

There's quite a few games that I never finished because of apathy or that they simply couldn't hold my interest. But as to games that were simply too frustrating to continue with, a few come to mind...

Ninja Gaiden for the Xbox - This game was chock full of issues that would have buried any other title - endlessly respawning enemies, backtracking, Cheap with a capital C bosses, lousy camera control. Yet it got a free ride from critics and game players. I trudged thru 5 levels before realizing I wasn't having any fun and just gave up and sold it back.

Lair for PS3 - The complete lack of checkpoints killed this one for me after only five days. Again, I made it thru around 5 levels or so but having to replay the entire mission everytime you did even one thing wrong made the game unplayable for me. It also didn't help that the framerate really chugged at 1080p.

Star Trek 25th Anniversary for PC - Even after 15 years, not being able to beat that last ship still sticks in my throat. I can only take solace in the fact that there was no ending to the game; once you did beat it, the credits rolled and it was all over.

Ninja Gaiden for the XBox, prior to the Ninja Dog creation :) I never trashed a controller until that game. Mike Tyson from Punchout gets an honorable mention, but I eventually took him down.
lol

Never finished Oblivion either :(

The Bard's Tale III for the C64 took me over a year to complete.

That game was weird, because it took forever to kill the first boss, but after you did the game was pretty easy until the final dungeon.

Did you play the new Bard's Tale game released a few years ago? I didn't, but was thinking about picking it up.

The original Rainbow 6 for N64....Controller config was horrid.

Hitman 2 for PS2....

I suck at the stealth based games.

I can't think of an actual game, but I can think of a game within a game. That would be Blitzball in Final Fantasy X.

I think I won one, maybe two games total while playing that, but most of the time I kept getting beat. Forget actually winning a tournament or beating the Luca Goers in your first matchup.

Cool thread idea.

So far I have completed Resistance:FOM, Splinter Cell:DA, COD3, and I'm about to complete Rainbow Six:Vegas on realistic mode shortly. I only have two levels to go, but I haven't had time to go back to them.

I never picked it up. Maybe I'll try to gamefly it or something, was it on PS2?

What pissed me of about Bards Tale III was, I would misplace the stargate wheel thing that you had to match the symbols up to change dimensions so I would be screwed for a few days till I found it lol.

It's cool how many different games have stumped people! From Zombies Ate My Neighbors to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, to the 1st Mega Man game, it's a pretty good mix so far. That probably just goes to show that certain people are going to do better with certain games and maybe not fair so well with others. Duh! So maybe I shouldn't feel so bad not being able to get a first place finish on Raingod! (I still do, anyway. :p)

So far, the three games that have come up most often are: Motorstorm, ES:IV Oblivion, and the Grand Turismo games. So, unless you really want to challenge yourself, and feel the pain that others have felt, if you haven't already, maybe refrain from picking one of those up the next time you're at the store! Having said that, Motorstorm is ALWAYS the game I put on to impress people with graphics and such. So what ya gonna do, huh?

Don't misconstrue my comments, I loved the games I referenced. But with games like Oblivion and Gran Turismo, you simply have so much content to work through, it's easier to lose interest over time. After putting 60+ hours into any game will tend to make a player lose interest or try something else.

I'd suggest Oblivion, Gran Turismo, or Motorstorm to anyone; you're certain to get your money's worth out of those titles.

When my gaming career began I was a finisher, but as I've played more games I'm not really finished too many of them. If you take out cheating, more games have finished me in the past 5 years than I've finished them.

I still like to play them though, I play until the gameplay becomes repetitive or boring. With the prices of games these days it has become difficult to justify the costs if I don't get too much gametime out of them.

Yup, and I'd suggest Motorstorm to anyone, too. Besides it more often than not being a FUN game, it's also a pretty good challenge. Then again, we're all different: What's taking me 191 races on Raingod level 4, took Dogdoctor only 4.

Oblivion, I'm also tempted to try. I like games that last a while. The last three Metroid games for the Cube took me FOREVER, but I loved taking the extra time exploring as much as I could. And then backtracking. And then backtracking back over what I had just backtracked. Good stuff! :p

I remember that stupid stargate wheel, LOL.

Strangely enough... one of the few games I've completed was GT2. I usually get bored with games (Oblivion, Bard's Tale, Ultima.. you name the game, I've gotten bored with it.) Unless it's painfully easy (Halo comes to mind) I'll give it up pretty quick.
GT2 just had my attention enough that I *HAD* to finish it. Needless to say, I've not played another GT game since then - I invested WAY too many hours in GT2 to ever play a sim-heavy racer again. Kind of a bummer.

Me and a friend actually teamed up to beat GT4, taking turns and such. Still took much longer than any other person would spend though. :D

hahahaha i've actually gotten good at the blitzball after playing it so much, but i've never beaten luca on my first try either. once you get jecht shot lvl 2 and pick up a couple other players around town its hard to lose
