I was blown away recently when I went to CC and BB to check out some LCD, DLP and Plasma with the prices for HDMI cables. Am I cheap for not wanting to pay $70 for HDMI cable??? :eek:I cannot believe the price they're being sold for at these stores. What gives, when anyone, shopping wisely can get the same cables from Monoprice and other cable vendor on this site for more than 2/3 less. I guess there must get a lot of J6P to buy cables at these price who don't know anything about HDMI cables, cause I am not one of them. And I have HDMI cables I bought dirt cheap at other stores online that works beautifully.:D
Any thoughts?

Huge mark ups. Tons of profits. Lots of suckers.
It's a simple money maker for stores, and probably one of the reasons why HDMI cables don't come bundled with hardware even though they cost very little to make, as it encourages stores to stock the hardware as they know they can make more money selling an accompaning HDMI cable.
Also if they keep prices high it will make some shoppers think cables at 1/10th the cost are going to preform worse - where as if there was only a 50% difference in price, they'd probably presume similar quality.
And finally, once a buyer has made a decision to purchase a hardware element it's likely an attempt to up sell them an HDMI cable is either going to result in a sale of the hardware+cable, or at worst just the hardware so from the poit of view of the retailer they have nothing to loose and everything to gain.
Go with monoprice, for sure. Their "basic" cables are better than the midline (which would be $100-ish at Best Buy) Monster cables, and their "premium" ones tend to outperform Monster's top ($500+, generally not available at Best Buy) cables except at VERY long (25+ feet).
And their "premium" HDMI cables run about $20. Unquestionable bargain.

Absolutely right! It's like the add on they try to sell you for your cell phone when you're in the T-Mobile and Verison stores. Man there are a lot of folks getting ripped. My momma told me I better shop around and I will. I like my money more than they do.:D
Its insane to as the cables in store can cost 1/4- 3/4 the cost of the player their.
In some ways I think its wrong to only offer expensive cables. Walmart sells cheeper HDMI cables.
About $35 which isn't bad.

The B&M stores have always charged outrageous prices for their cables. This is nothing new.

Reminds me of years ago when I went to a CompUSA to buy a firewire cable... the cheapest they had were $55. I went home, and bought a better one online an hour later for $5.
Cables at retail are just another "stupid tax" (or desperation tax).
