I am looking for the best available 73" or > DLP RPTV.
Samsung has one, and Mitsubishi as well.
Will be used for DVDs, Dish Network, and BDs.

Although I don't see RBE, my wife does somewhat...
Suggestions anyone??

Should I wait for a SXRD XBR5??

The RBE is getting a lot better I thought, but I haven't ever seen it myself, I personally am going for the XBR5 this winter (right after xmas when it releases).... it could be something worth checking out I suppose.

I'm sure someone will post up their thoughts between those two DLPs.

If your wife can see the rainbows then don't get a DLP. Do you really want to bomb the WAF? You might have to consider a LCoS set, Sony and JVC are the options. Good luck.

Yeah if your wife can see the RBE, go with the 70" SXRD-XBR2 from Sony. Or you can wait for the XBR5 releasing in January but those are going to cost a pretty penny.

I'm with the other guys, the mit's are great sets, but if your wife can the RBE on them, I've go with Sony or JVC

Ahh the WAF (Wife approval Factor)...

For sure, I was set to get Plasma, then set to get a 65" Mtsu DLP, my wife came to the store wth me to finalize the deal. To make a some what long story short, she picked a 61" JVC LCOS. She hated the DLP with a passion. (made me glad I did not go with it in our theater, and I was really close to going DLP there as well)

^Why did your wife hate the DLP?

I have been toying with the idea of buying my 1st FP.
Unfortunately, the FPs I have seen are just not bright enough.
(washed out colors, etc.)

With that in mind, I am trying to get the biggest (and best) RPTV.

Not sure I can wait 4 months for the Sony...

Looks like the Mits. will have to do.

Why does the wife have any decision making in a/v?

Bad idea.

She kept describing something she was seeing around the edges of objects and particularly this cloud/mist at the bottom of this waterfall in the HD content Best Buy had running on both displays. The more I talked to her about it, I think she was seing rainbows but could not describe it well to me. It looked fine to me.

I could barely detect maybe the slightest glow at the edge of the fog. I mean, I was all set for the Mitsu DLP at that point. On the selection front? Well I recently got to finish my newly completed dedicated theater and this display was for the living room where I had previously been using FP for the past few years, so in a way this was to be her display anyways. I'm pretty darn happy with the 1080p 61" JVC LCOS, so much so, I wish I had went for the 70" now instead even though it owuld of been a tough fit into the space allowed. :(

I guess I don't understand why, if you really like the current 61" JCS you are not going with the 70" JVC for your new set. If not JVC then stick with the non RBE LCOS from Sony, which is the same technology that JVC uses. You're only logical choices are Mits, Samsung, JVC, or Sony. If Samsung comes out with a 70 LED or Mits comes out with a 70" laser then you may have another decision to make.

I'm the one with the 61" JVC, not the OP. I would only suggest to the OP, to make sure he looks at other displays as well in this size range, but nothing wrong with the Mits at all, just that for LCOS 70" right now, the price is dynamite.

Sorry John, my bad. I assume you are referring to the Sony 70"XBR2 right? Isn't the XBR2 technology at least 2 years old? Hey, it's still a great set and I have been wondering if it might not be better than the newest A3000 series in the 60" size. What do you think?

Nawww I am refering to the 70" JVC IDLA. Around $2K right now.

I have a hard time finding JVC's in the Phoenix area. I even asked once here and got no responses.

Really it is best to order from buydig, they are doing free shipping included in the price.

To see the display? Well the 61" version anyways, hit some Best Buys and look for the clearance section.

May have a hard time finding one , even at BB, Have not seen any JVC of any size, at any of the 5 BB's around me for months now, or CC, or anywhere.

A CC manager told me two months ago that CC will no longer carry JVC RPTV's. At BB all I could find were smaller JVC close outs. Can we assume that something is wrong with JVC displays that nobody wants to carry them?

I think I read something:confused:somewhere about JVC wanting to get out of the RPTV market and concentrate on their FP technology.

Makes some sense (considering the dirt cheap prices on RPTVs)...

I had not heard that JVC was jumping ship but I know Toshiba and Hitachi are done after this year, If JVC splits that will leave only Mitsubishi, Samsung, and Sony to play micro display. And all three of them have other avenues if they choose. I think you'll see Mitsubishi as micro displays last man standing.

I guess the question is: will microdisplay RPTVs go extinct soon?

I can't imagine it, at least at this point.
IMO, DLP and LCOS RPTVs produce the best video above 40" and under 80".
Flat screen tech (plasma and LCD) is inferior in video quality.
Viewing angles, black levels, etc. are just not there yet.
But that is just my opinion...

BTW, I do not think FPs will become common place either....

Sorry to disagree but I find a good plasma to have better blacks and better overall PQ. Several reviews of the new Pioneer 5080 (768P) and 5010 (1080P) rate them as the best blacks they have ever reviewed. You can get a decent 60" plasma for under $2200 and a really good 58" 1080P for under $3800. As those prices come down you will see the death of the micro display. Sony had decided not to release the LCOS XBR5 line so they will have nothing above 60". Unless Mitsubishi does something with lasers next year you can plan the funeral.

AS far as i know Sony is still releasing the XBR5 70", next Feb now.
and I disagree about the plasmas being better unless your talking about the top of line Pioneer, and at those prices, it should be! but even then not much better, and i've yet to see a plasma do better, or even as good blacks

I've never seen a plasma I like better than the best DLP sets. Just IMO of course and it seems that at least some people agree. Then there are the electrical usage, viewing angles, weight, price etc. issues. RPTV still make sense to me. With retailers clearing out the RPTVs for the plasmas and LCDs that take up much less space and are more impressive to the customer, it may be the end soon. Pity. I'll just go DLP FP.

Go back and read those reviews. You will see that the "Best Blacks" remarks always have a disclaimer added...Like this: "Best Blacks on any Flat Panel TV". Now why do you think they say that? Look at the numbers, you will see that Plasma and LCD have a long way to go.

Folks in the Mits thread are complaining about noise levels, which seem to come from the ballast. Some people are claiming they can hear the noise from the next room, and that it is very disburbing. This is the principal thing that is preventing me from (thus far) purchasing this TV. What do you think?

Mits has came out with a fix that takes 15min to make the high pitch noise go away.
