View Full Version : KDS-60A3000 questions - Rainbow artifacts a problem?
I was gonna go plasma, but recently I've been considering the Sony Bravia SXRD KDS-60A3000 60" 1080p Rear Projection HDTV. Do I have to worry about “rainbow artifacts?”
How do you owners like this TV. Is it reliable or trouble-prone?

The Sony 60A3000 is based on Lcos technology which = no rainbows.
I can't vouch for the reliability since I just bought my KDS-60A2020 but after upgrading my cable to HD content its looking fanastic. :D

Is the KDS-60A2020 you just bought also going to be guarenteed free of rainbows as well?

Sounds like troll-bait.

yes
Thanks nick.
Does the so called "hotspot" bother you? Or do you not even see it.
nicknomo 10-02-07, 07:01 PM In all fairness to wolvernole, I think he was just kidding around. He threw in a smiley face, so I think he was just trying to to say there were no rainbows.. while creating sunshine in your heart... <- See web humor isn't always funny
In regards to your question, not much of a hot spot on my 55". That doesn't mean it won't show up on a 60", but I I haven't heard anyone complain about one. I tested brighness uniformity with an all white screen (100 IRE), and it was pretty good. Some unevenness in the corners, but nothing all that bad from my view. I was in the "sweet spot" though, and didn't really test from too many other angles.
Either way, I notice nothing out of the ordinary during normal viewing.

P.S. Only DLP TVs (from Samsung, Mitsubishi,...) are prone to rainbows.

I know this is an old thread but I don't know what to do. I just bought the KDS-60a3000 yesterday. Beautiful set. Used it for maybe 4 hours and now the screen has what I think is called a 'hotspot'. Looks like light reflecting off the screen but that is not a possibility. Mostly obvious when the formerly beautiful screen is turned off. Only slightly visible every now and then in movies with dark scenes. When off, this soft-white 'spot' is about a baseball size area. There's even, I think, a similar area in a line going up slightly from the 'baseball' area.
At any rate, how common is this spot in rear projection units? This thing is 1 day old and I have to drive 80 miles to exchange it. If it's just gonna happen again, I'll keep it. It's very very rare to notice it at all when watching a movie. But man oh man does it take away from the sexiness of what was, less than a day ago, a flawless and massive screen.
Please let me hear some feedback.

Uggg! Not even kidding that I have spent nearly every free second searching regarding this issue. Thanks for the link. I turned off ALL lights in the house at nighttime and on a black screen it is not visible, leading me to believe that it probably is from very minor reflection of the collective lighting in the house, no matter what the source of lighting happens to be.
Anyway, if I can come to grips with it, I can save myself a trip and start appreciating the otherwise awesome picture.
Thanks again!
