Panasonics are still the most reliable- they invented no loss high speed to dvd-r in 2003. They were the first in a reliable HDD unit. Their user friendly menues even in 2003 still far exceed in 2007 the Liteons and Philips. They(panny) have chase playback(Tivo) on RAM discs and hdd. Panny is the best DVD Recorder ever produced. They have produced thousands more than anyone else- and their reliability is concomitant with this production.

I have had my Magnavox DVD recorder for at least 3 or more years, and I pretty much record with it every day. To this day its still running as it did when I first got it.
I am actually quite surprised. Although I dunno how Magnavox products stand now. And Panasonic I don't have any experience with, the only panny product I might have had was a portable CD player years ago.

All in the eye of the beholder. I own stock in the company and even I would not go as far as you do. My Polaroid 2000g gives me a better quality DVD than the ES-20 I no longer use. I re-did all my VHS transfers because of the noticeable difference in quality.

When I was looking at purchasing a DVDR a few years ago, I looked at the Panasonic, Sony, Pioneer and Toshiba. I bought the Toshiba, but would not claim it is the best. Pioneer and Panasonic produced extremely good DVDRs. :)
Not having owned either, I would be hard pressed to declare which is superior or even better than my Toshiba. The company selling the most is not always the best indicator of highest quality. If so, I suppose RCA TVs would have to be declared the best TVs of all time.

i have 2 tosh dr2s and 1 panny es15, all great machines. the toshes i use for w/s dvds that also play on friends 4x3 tvs, the panny (w 500 lines in lp mode) for stuff 2-3 hrs long or strictly 4x3 content. one of the dr2s, after recording about 1500 or so dvd-rs, wore out. i like the machine so much i had the drive replaced, now its fine again.
