View Full Version : Philips 50PFP5332 REVIEW yzerman195 10-02-07, 09:41 AM http://www.bigscreenreview.net/reviews/Philips_50PFP5332D.html Interesting review for those interested. PhilipsPhanatic 10-02-07, 01:46 PM Pretty skimpy review...is the TV out yet? If not, they should have waited. I personally like Ambilight so I like the sets with that feature. If Philips exits plasma TV's, look for a run on plasmas with Ambilight. ;) yzerman195 10-03-07, 08:55 AM The set is out.....I have it., and love it so far. hiller 10-03-07, 01:35 PM Hey y'all. I'm a newbie here as of today. I just got this set last week and had my Dish Network upgraded to HD and I am in heaven. I typically avoid Philips products, but not this time... this Philips model is what I narrowed down to after researching similar priced HDTVs for over two weeks. My HDTV search included LCDs and RPTVs (the Sony SDRX RPTV came in 2nd place overall BTW). I felt comfortable with my decision prior to hooking it up in my livingroom but after watching this beauty for a week I now know without a doubt that I made the right decision. I really like the USB port that enables firmware updates. The digital coaxial audio output is great. The 2 HDMI connections are wonderful. The TV is perfect for $1500. (I paid 10% less than that because of a relative's Walmart discount - lucky me huh?). yzerman195 10-03-07, 05:04 PM I'm very happy with mine also. The automatic stretch feature is also quite nice. I kept my c&b low for the first hundred hours and am now trying to get the settings to my taste. Have you adjusted the set to final settings or are you still breaking in? PhilipsPhanatic 10-03-07, 11:08 PM I'm very happy with mine also. The automatic stretch feature is also quite nice. I kept my c&b low for the first hundred hours and am now trying to get the settings to my taste. Have you adjusted the set to final settings or are you still breaking in? Yes, keep the Contrast and Brightness in the 40's for the first 100-200 hours. AUTOMATIC should be used 99% of the time; use WIDESCREEN for a DVD that you really want to see in OAR. But unless it's 2.35:1 most of the time AUTO doesn't distort it too much. The Philips stretch function is the best I've ever seen. Anybody wants the Tips Sheet, PM me your e-mail. yzerman195 10-10-07, 10:26 AM Yes, keep the Contrast and Brightness in the 40's for the first 100-200 hours. By the way, do you know if this set is the same as the PF9731d except without the ambilight feature? Anyway its a great set that apparently not too many people know about. Almost a steal at Sams Club. hiller 10-11-07, 07:14 AM Likewise, thanks for the info PhilipsPhanatic. I was also wondering what the differences might be between the 50PFP5332 and the PF9731D. Unfortunately I didnt keep my C & B down as suggested in the info. I just went with what the default set up offered for home viewing. I wonder if the newer PFP50 can handle it w/o break-in? yzerman195 10-11-07, 10:12 AM Likewise, thanks for the info PhilipsPhanatic. The factory settings are much too high....I believe the factory setting for contrast is 100%. I'm past my break in period now, and I have the contrast at 70 and brightness at 52.Keeping the contrast down a bit should help in the longevity of your set. PhilipsPhanatic 10-11-07, 10:02 PM Thanks for the Tips Sheet....very helpful. By the way, do you know if this set is the same as the PF9731d except without the ambilight feature? Anyway its a great set that apparently not too many people know about. Almost a steal at Sams Club. I'm not sure but it's very similar. Aesthestically, it's basically a 9631/9731 minus Ambilight. But some of the earlier non-Ambilight knockoffs had a reliability problem that necessitated taking advantage of the retailer's generous return policies. I wonder if the newer PFP50 can handle it w/o break-in? Well, which preset did you use -- PERSONAL, RICH, etc ?? Big difference in the C&B settings, but pretty much across the board, they're too high. Remember: you can ONLY change the settings in PERSONAL -- if you change them in the other presets, they will revert back BUT the changed settings 'flip over' to PERSONAL and override whatever you had there. So if you like RICH but want the Color 10 points higher and adjust it, next time you turn on the set, RICH will be back to factory default but PERSONAL will have the RICH settings with Color+10. So only make changes in PERSONAL and use the other presets as guides. All that said, check out the Tips Sheet and read the 9630/9631/9731 threads and you'll see over 90% of us have our C & B in the 50's and 60's, tops.;) yzerman195 10-12-07, 07:50 AM Well, which preset did you use -- PERSONAL, RICH, etc ?? It has CURRENT,NATURAL,VIVID, AND SUBTLE. When you choose one of those presets it becomes CURRENT. Any changes you made do not affect the original preset values. In regards to reliability I am hoping that this newer model does not have problems like BLACK SCREEN,which should have been addressed by now. I've now had mine a month and everything is great. Reading about past problems has almost scared me a couple of times into taking back my set but I really like the pic quality, its appearence etc.Looks like I'm keeping it. OK, sounds like for fewer Presets they made them more functional. BSOD shouldn't be a problem; it was solved by late-2006 and your model is strictly 2007. Enjoy the set, by all means, no need to return it. ALL plasmas/LCD's have little glitches, even Pioneer and Panny. yzerman195 11-01-07, 08:51 AM OK, sounds like for fewer Presets they made them more functional. As an update, I've had this set for almost 2mo now and its been great....no burn in or IR, HD is fantastic and even SD is pretty decent. I'd recommend it to anyone. hiller 07-02-08, 03:38 PM Update FYI, I'm still loving my Philips 50PFP5332. Haven't had one single problem in almost a year. The picture still blows me away every time I watch premium HD programming... |
