View Full Version : New to the game?
eghill1125 10-02-07, 10:11 AM Hello,
I have just purchased the PS3 and have some questions. These may have been asked, but I couldn't find them so I have to ask it. Sorry.
I have been a PC gamer for a long time and console gaming will give me alot of trouble.
So first question is this. Is there any game recommendations for free downloads on the Playstation site to get me accustomed to using a gamepad?
Something that isn't using ten thousand buttons at first until I start getting a feel of which buttons do what? I like Sports games alot if that helps.
Second question. I have a 6 year old girl, and wanted to know if there are any PS2 games that look good on the PS3 for her to get? I don't need PS3 games for her, just something I can get cheap to entertain her with.
I'd appreciate your thoughts and am happy to be joing the PS communtity.
Thanks,

There are plenty of demos available for download from the PS Store, all of which will give you great insight to console gaming. In particular you may want to look at: Moterstorm, Heavenly Sword, NHL 08 and Dirt - these all are very solid titles without tons "button" smashing required.
As far as for games for your daughter Loco Roco Cocoreccho is awesome! Lots of fun and at a cheap price point as well, $10 I think. Also, don't forget that the PS3 is backwards compatible, so the plethora of PS2/PS1 titles are a great options - many of the older games can be found at your local games store for next to nothingt.
Happy gaming
bcrossan7 10-02-07, 10:43 AM I was a PC gamer (FPS) for a long time before I got my PS3 and I had no issues getting used to a controller. Sure you don't get the same kind of accuracy as with a mouse and keyboard but remember everyone has that problem to deal with. The last console I had was a N64 and it took me no time at all to figure out the Sony controller.
so's your face 10-02-07, 10:54 AM get all the demos you can...
then for adjusting to the controller i would suggest buying "super stardust HD" or "blast factor" from the psn. great games and very inexpensive and you can enjot them with your 6 year old as well since the control scheme is pretty simple.
if you want something for motion sensing, get "flow" or "super rub-a-dub." again, very inexpensive(around $5) from the psn and great for the feel of the motion sensing and great for a 6 year old as well. i know because my 4 year old girl enjoys them both. also, since they're downloads, you don't have to worry about her fumbling around with discs!!!
Mindwarper 10-02-07, 12:48 PM I would try to download some demos off of the ps stre. You can get an idea of what you like. I would suggest resistance.
ssx 3 might be fun with your daughter.
Most of the star wars games go over well with kids. Legos, etc. But I love super bombad racing. Big headed star wars on floater cars. Silly fun.

Benkrishman 10-02-07, 07:23 PM I would recommend checking out the Skate demo, as well as Gran Turismo HD.
seanpatrickb 10-02-07, 08:29 PM To improve button coordination i think Madden is pretty much the best for that. A lot of people complain about the game, with good reason, but its good for getting the controller down. You can usually find past titles for super cheap, and could even get a ps2 version of last years game for like 10-15$ just to teach you the controller.
I was in the exact same boat as you. I would definitely NOT get resistance. That game made me more frustrated about the switch to console gaming from PC. You will get upset and want to throw your controller. It just will never be as good as a keyboard mouse. You'll eventually get better at it, but still not as good.
Many of the racing games are fun. Sports is also one of my choices, so go ahead and download all the demos and try them out. Find out which one you find to be the most fun. Personally, I've enjoyed Tiger Woods '07 and will probably make the switch to '08.
What's interesting, is that the way you have to swing in Tiger Woods is good training ground on learning the intricacies of small motor movements on the sticks. I've noticed that I've become better at it in other games.
Once you start feeling comfortable with the controller, I think that WarHawk would be a good FPS starter. Large maps means you can mess up and not feel to bad about it. Also, the controls and action feel better to me than Resistance (Resistance is an awesome game, but it really frustrated me as my first console game after the transition).
For the kids, I found that they enjoy some of the PSN store games work fine to keep them busy. Although they like the racing games (ages 9, 7 & 4).
Hope this helps!

hilarious! I was thinking about that the other day and was suprised it hadn't been ressurrected in a while
For me, Resistance FoM was also depressing to play at first, having had a mouse/keyboard in use for a decade+. However, Warhawk will get you used to a controller rather fast, if nothing else from the desire to increase times between respawning :) Playing anything that incorporates the two analog sticks will help.
Mindwarper 10-03-07, 01:43 PM Amazon used and ebay have great prices on ps2 games. I found some new ps2 games for as low as 4.99$. Some of them will keep you happy.

For getting use to the gamepad, Super Stardust HD is a simple shooter to get use to the analog sticks and learning to use the trigger buttons which took me longer than I thought to get use to. I would then move on to Heavenly Sword which will get you to work on variations of the controller usage. Then I would move to a FPS or some other massive button game (R:FoM or Warhawk are a lot of fun).
As for your 6-year old, Flow and Super Rub a Dub are both good previous recommendations. I would also put lemmings in there if that is within her grasp to control.
Have fun!

I cheated though and had been using a gamepad for sports games. Don't know how you made it with keyboard and mouse.
Those who were able to adapt to FPS without a keyboard and mouse are higher in the evolutionary tree than me.
After a couple more hours of getting destroyed in Warhawk I played 10 minutes of Enemy Territory: RTCW and was able to feel better about myself by killing people.
I still probably have less than 20 hours combined on FPS with a gamepad, but my goodness its difficult to adapt. My aim is horrible, and I still can't use the right analog stick as easily as I could the mouse.
