View Full Version : VPH 600Q question
lisaparkhurst 10-02-07, 02:16 PM I have a Sony VPH 600Q I turned it on and set the switch to test and I get a nice grid pattern, but when I set the switch to normal I get nothing do I have to have a source connected for anything to show up or should the tubes light regardless. I haven't connected the BNC or composite in yet so could this be the problem or could the switch be bad? I am a newbie at CRT and I can't wait to get this up and running. The tubes look wonderful even though this is an old machine. The board the switch is on is the "HB" board. Any suggestions? Thanks Lisa:confused:
axellagerlf 10-02-07, 04:03 PM I'd recommend you purchase a newer projector,
analog chassis are really hard to install, try a barco 800 they are sold by curt palme at curtpalme.com for only 500usd.
The tubes may be dark with no input,, try a vcr or other source, you'll need a rca to bnc
adapter. The vph 600 would be a cool starter projector, just try to keep the image under 70" diagonal. I'll post a link for a manual later.
Don't be discouraged by the, [If your projector doesn’t have gravimetric focus with single photon emission, you will die of festering boils! routine.]
Dave Lister 10-03-07, 03:26 AM Use a video to get TV and watch video's and a DVD player to watch movies, the tubes don't light up without an input.
lisaparkhurst 10-03-07, 05:49 PM I am looking at a newer CRT but I still like the old one these seem like they are so much fun! I just ordered my BNC to RCA connectors so I will let you know how I make out. I am keeping the screen size at 60" which is plenty big enough for me, for now anyways.:D

This is a very good video to calibrate your projector to.

lisaparkhurst 10-06-07, 09:48 AM Was that your cat? That had to be the funniest things I have ever seen, although my husband has a fantasy some what like that but from watching that video  I don't think we will try it. Hopefully the cat has a good lawyer. :D
Just food for thought; I wonder if that's where they got the idea for the swings ride at the carnivals.
My projector project is coming along nicely also I decided to keep the 600q and I purchased a line doubler and the remote box that goes with the unit so I should be up and running as soon as the theater room is built. We added on to our house another 1500 sq. ft addition and some of that will be for the theater.
We have had a few set backs with the town we live in concerning permits that they already gave us and now they want to take back as the addition is large, but in the end we will be back in business again and building. It's just a money game and they want their share that they think they deserve. What ever! I am just glad I found this site to get feed back on the CRT projectors.
What type of sound system do you recommend? I bought a Genesis G-608 System is that good? The sound so far is phenomenal! Just Curious. Thanks for reading.

Doug Baisey 10-06-07, 10:41 AM Isn't this a video freq only projector 15 kHz? If so it wont run the line doubler that runs at 31.5 kHz. Doug
It's like "danger will robertson"!!!!!
DON"T hook the line doubler to that projector!
the power supply can't handle the doubled power!!!!!!!!
lisaparkhurst 10-06-07, 09:53 PM Oh ok thanks! I won't hook that up then. I'll save it for my next CRT. Does anyone have a power cord for the VPR-722 that I could buy or know where I could get one cheap. :D
Isn't that just a computer power cable?
As for a sound system, go to parts express, http://www.pesupport.com/cgi-bin/config.pl
So you can start another obsession...Oh I mean hobby!
lisaparkhurst 10-07-07, 03:01 PM I have learned a lot in the past few days by reading your posts. I am really hooked now and I have bought new tubes for backup if I ever need them. My Sony has beautiful tubes already but I couldn't resist the price of the three I bought. Plus I ended up with two extra used tubes the red one and a green one so I think I will be set for a while. Plus I have learned they used the same tubes in many other machines so I have versatility. I also learned that the VPR 722 gets its power from the projector connection and it came with that cable. I was so excited! Now to wait for everything to arrive and the room to be finished and I will be up and running. Unless I find a newer CRT then I will be running that but so far I think I will stick with the Sony 600Q until I learn more of what to look for.
Any suggestions on how I should store my extra tubes so they won't grow fungus? They were shipped in bubble wrap and peanuts with a foam cushion in a regular box.
Thanks for the information and help. And I already bought the Genesis Media Labs G- 608 sound system and yes that is another obsession aka hobby. :D
Thanks for reading Lisa
The fungus, is not really a fungus. In the case of these tubes, it's a chemical reaction
between the crt housing and the glycol. Real fungus is a photography term for real fungus "slime mold" that can grow on the lenses in a humid to tropical climate.
You will see that some tube models do not get the creeping crud, but use the same
glycol...Or maybe, the tubes were vaccinated when they were children!
lisaparkhurst 10-08-07, 10:40 AM These were probably vaccinated then, They look beautiful. Thanks for your post. Lisa
Do the tubes have a little air bubble?
lisaparkhurst 10-08-07, 05:36 PM No these are brand new and have nothing on them very clean and shinny. I got them at a great deal for all three. :D
lisaparkhurst 10-14-07, 02:37 PM Well after buying our first projector the Sony 600Q my husband fell in love with the picture so much we went and bought two more CRT projectors. One for the basement for the kids, One for the rec. room and the one we have now is for the theater room. I got everything hooked up on Friday and made the adjustments and wow what a picture! For only 300 lumens I can have the lights on and the picture still looks great! I connected the computer and the Digital cable box up and we are now in 80 inch screen heaven! I am amazed at the black being a true black what a difference. Thanks so much for all of the great advice on this site.
By the way the other two projectors we bought were a Sony VPH 1001Q (700 lumens) and a Sony VPH 722Q (500 lumens). I will let you know how much we like them. We are truely hooked now and it can only get better! :D
Dave Lister 10-15-07, 03:23 AM They are only standard definition projectors, if you are impressed by them you will be blown away by high definition projectors. ;)
I own a VPH1000QM with over 80,000 hours on the tubes, starting to get dim now though.
lisaparkhurst 10-15-07, 07:35 PM Are you gonna replace the tubes? You can find relatively cheap ones on ebay I'm sure. Are they the SD 187 type? They should be easy to change I would think.

If I can get a decent set for a low enough price I will retube it but I haven't been able to find a decent set, let alone find a set cheap enough. :(
lisaparkhurst 10-23-07, 11:53 AM What are the tube numbers? SD 137X ? I got mine from Curt Palme and they are beautiful tubes for an unbelievable price. You should check with him and see what he could do for you. If that doesn't work check on Flea bay (E-bay) sometimes there are good tubes in other machines that don't work or need other parts.
