xombi, is the game smooth on the PS3? The demo wasnt compared to the 360's.

Yeah, it runs smooth...no problems, although...I have been seriously thinking about taking it back for the 360 version...the reason is because I had a real issue with playing online, out of 10-15 invites I was only able to connect with one person. Even people that had all green bars-it was timing out. Maybe I have to enable uPnP.

yep, disable 720 if you want to force 1080 on 2k8 (atleast this works for the demo)

Had the same issue with 2K7 on the PS3 and it was my biggest complaint with that game. I could never play online with my brother in Florida, even though we're both running high speed connections. I would have thought they'd fixed this since APF runs online like a dream.

You shouldn't have to disable 720 for it to run at 1080. I've got the demo and it runs in 1080i automatically.

I don't know if it's just me or what, but for some reason I was and still am more impressed with last year's version of NBA 2k. So far i must say i'm very disappointed with all 3 NBA games. I guess I will have to rent each one first, then make my decision. Last year it was almost a no-brainer to get 2k7.

I would like to get some feedback from anyone who enjoyed 2k7 and how it compares to 2k8.

Spend some more time with the game, check out some of the reviews of the game also, they bring out a lot of differences and features between this year and last. Honestly, if you look past the facial models (the graphics are pretty good, imo), this game feels completely reworked. It is IMO, the deepest and most complete basketball game ever made. The more you play 2K8, the more you appreciate it. 2K messed up with the demo by not showcasing the new play calling features and off-ball controls (they are awesome) in the game. The graphics are a bit better than the demo also; the demo just showcases some of the new animations, but only a few. If you love or even like basketball games, don't rent it, buy it.

It is a little tough to get used to the game at first, because it won't just let you take a superstar, crossover the whole team and dunk it in everytime. This is great because it prevents cheesers who love to do this, and also forces players to play the game of basketball. This is the first basketball game I have ever played, where I felt it was necessary to run plays to score. This game isn't perfect, but it is arguably, the best basketball game ever made. Once you get used to the gameplay, you're in for a treat.

P.S. I have the full game on the 360 (I'm sure they are equal), but I played the demo on the PS3.

For some reason the demo would chug at certain points while my 360 version never showed it. Its good to know the full version has no problems. I may just get the Wii's version . I think its more fun on the Wii and it has "online".

Ps. I'm mixing it up here. Wii has NBA Live 08 not NBA 2k8. Latter is only for PS3/360.

It's pretty bad. Just as IGN pointed out, you can shut down a guard one-on-one with any center with a decent defensive rating. It just doesn't make a lot of sense, sim-wise.

That's disappointing. I always liked when playing D involved anticipation and quick reflexes, not CPU assistance. I'm guessing lockdown D will be exploited to no end online.

Overall, it seems like none of this year's bball games may be worth $60. That's pretty disappointing for me because I normally buy 2k every year (and Live back in the 90s) and I don't see any games that I am interested in besides these bball games prior to the release of COD 4 (please don't get delayed like UT3).

Does anybody in here read any other sites besides IGN? Has anyone read Gamespot's review, or any other for that matter? Seriously, IGN blew the lockdown D out of proportion, imo. Try the game out before you listen to 1 website. This game is phenomenal, and I'm not trying to sell anything, I'm just extremely impressed with the quality of this game.

I had problems connecting to everyone, but maybe 2 people..that was out of 15 people. Even the players with green bars-I couldn't connect. Sorry to say-but I had to trade this version for the "other" system. I have been having better success with getting online games. But I can tell you that both versions are identical in my eyes-which is a good thing considering how ea sports usually dumps the inferior versions on ps3.

i read on the 2k forums that you have to put your ps3 in front of the dmz. that's easy for me since i work with computers all day long, but i don't know how easy that will be for the average home user. that's a little much to do just for one game. i can understand if all online games were having issues, but it's only this game. i'll update the post when he tries it and lets me know if it works or not.

Okay, so I took the plunge and purchased it. So far I like what i see. I've only had time to play a few quick games. I tried doing the slam dunk training and it's hard as hell. I'm still not used to it. One thing that I noticed while playing against cleveland is that the CPU AI is much more improved. I'm hoping to spend more time with the game and hopefully get some online gaming going. For anyone interested in playing online, just shoot me a message...

Its awesome :D

NBA Live is not anywhere close to 2k8. 2k8 is THE bball game of the year. The post plays are great and actually make players like Dwight Howard and Shaq useful. Lock on D is not a big problem like IGN says it is. Even if Shaq guards your PG, guess what, pass in to your center because he is either open or has a 6'1" guard on him and its an easy bucket. Doing that a couple times will send Shaq daddy back to the basket real quick on future plays. Playing Shaq on a guard is retarded and the IGN guy does not know how to play basketball.

I played my bro (I was the celtics) and he kept leaving Ray Allen open, doubling Pierce and Garnett. Guess what, drained trey after trey. All game he was bitching I was hitting all my shots. DONT LEAVE ALLEN OPEN!!! Same idea for Shaq, bring him to my PG and I will torture you down low, ALL DAY LONG!!!

If you know how to play, IGN's Lock on D will be a non issue.

Gameplay is the best I have ever seen in a bball game. The animations are better, especially the little things like when a player off-the-ball runs between two other players he does a simple animation where he turns sideways using his arms to push between and slide through the gap. Its very nice and sells the realistic feel of the game.

The only real issue I have is the way they made the dribbling/isomotion. You can no longer do any move you want at anytime. It kind of depends on momentum, direction, etc. I find it diffult to spin, go around the back, etc. when I want to. It makes sense why they did this way, but it makes me feel like I dont have control. Not sure if its just gonna take a bit of patience, but as of right now its rough.

Overall, this easily gets a 9/10.

Dunk Contest is badass as well. Get some friends over, a couple drinks, and go to war. I did a leaning tomahawk over a car with Gerald Green  96/100 from teh judges. YEAH!

NOPE its not.. Put the setting on superstar or hall of fame.. THen use shaq to guard the point guard with lock on D.. Then tell me what the computer does next?

After trying that a few times.. I bet you will not play shaq on a point guard anymore and think you will win a single game.

My cousin and I are having the same issue. We're in different cities and both went online for the first on Sunday. If we went into a room with 20 people only about 2 of them show green bars on the ping status. We were lucky if were able to connect to them. We couldn't connect to each other.

It's not a DMZ issue either because my cousin was hooked up directly to his cable modem via ethernet (bypassing the router). I was hooked up via wireless router but hadn't had this problem playing any other games. Visual Concepts needs to fix this.

Has this been the same for everyone? Does anyone have a quick fix.

lock on d isnt as bad as everyone is making it out. on the harder difficulties, even top perimeter defenders cant always lock down good offensive player, let alone that shaq bs ign was talking about.

i'm really impressed with the ai in this game too, but i haven't gotten used to the way the players move. its completely different from all the previous basketball games. its more realistic and better in the long run, but right now its just frustrating.

also, in 2k7 you had the option to do different types of dunks and layups with either hand but in 2k8 i cant seem to do that. the shot stick isn't working for me as well as it did in 2k7...am i doing something wrong?

I have been playing B-ball games for a long time so i can kinda of expect the timing of when to release the shoot. I love 2k8 to death but when I have pro players open and in the paint missing routine jumpers sometimes less than 50% it starts to grow very frustrating. Am i doing something wrong, right how im using the square button for shooting and starting to think i should use the shoot stick. I would really like some feed back on what other players are using. Also one thing I noticed, is when i go to practice mode to shoot the ball around to practice my timing on most shoots even with perfect release I will miss the shoot. But when I release the ball too late, i make the shot. can someone contest to this please help.

Much of the review is right on the money. I too was surprised to see that the Graphics on 2k7 are better than 2k8. I can also tell that the gameplay is much more improved and this is probably where you get your money's worth. After spending more time with the game and with different teams I really got to appreciate all the little things they've added this year.. .Player animations along with a much more improved AI.

So far I'm happy with this year's version but a bit disappointed with the graphics. Also, the Dunk Contest is a great addon.

To be honest, I had made my decision before the review and have been playing Live for the last week and that review just reassured me in my decision. I absolutely ADORED 2K7 last year but after a while some of the bugs just got to me. I was tired of missing layups, getting outrebounded every time I missed a shot and not being able to truly direct my ball handler with the Iso moves. After playing the demo and now seeing GT's reviews, it's nice to have that reassurance that you weren't crazy thinking that 2K8 just didn't seem any better, especially when you've got 2K fans (who are more rabid than Madden fans, imo) all over the web saying that 2K8 is the best basketball game ever based solely on reputation alone.

I'd really like to see some MAJOR improvements in 2K9 that warrant another $60 out of my pocket. 2K8 didn't do that this year so my money went someplace where I felt they really did make some fantastic updates and got a lot of things right (albeit still some things wrong).

To be honest, I wasn't impressed at all with either of the basketball demos. It was truly a toss up as to which game had the least compromises. I've been a live fan since pretty much the beginning and NBA 2k7 was my first 2k game purchase. I still don't know which is the better game of the 2 since I've only played the Live demo. Bottom line is, there's a whole lot more to these games than what's provided in the demo versions.

Last year it was a much easier choice. 2k7 blew everything away. This year, it's a lot closer with no one game being singled out as the true winner.
My advice, either rent 2k8 and Live and test them out for a few days, or just go with 2k7 for $20.

Personally, Since 2K7 was so good last year, I picked up 2K8 and am not looking back. None of the demos are good enough to sell you the game in my opinion.

Agreed. The demo that did impress me most, however, was Live and that got my purchase after being a 2K man for the last 3 seasons. I'm glad I went with Live because I loved it in the glory days on the PS1 (98,99) but then nothing on the PS2 ever grabbed me until 2K5. I'm having as much fun with Live today as I did back then, which says a lot to me.

Overall, the great thing for gamers is that the competition is back and that will only inspire all kinds of new stuff...hopefully...LOL.

I agree. It's hard to judge these games based on demos alone. I mean a demo is an unfinished game and is only giving you a taste. If you're really torn, then the best advice is to give each game a rent once they are available.
