1.) First off, did anyone watch the series premiere of this Monday night? It is HD and looked good on Comcast Bay Area cable.

2.) What do you all think? Critics are praising it and it's not that bad. Has an "Arrested Development" feel to it and isn't campy as you might expect from CW.

I watched the premiere. I dug it. I'll keep recording it. The actors seems good, and the characters have potential.

I think some kids who watched Lindsey Shaw on "Ned's Declassified..." and then catch her on this new show are going to be in for a bit of a surprise. Her character is a bit more grown up. *L*

Lindsey Shaw looked great in the premiere, she is definitely one cute 18 year old.

I watched the pilot live a couple nights ago and thought it was really pretty well done too. Good mixture of high school humor along with the "aliens" slant and a little sweetness thrown in. The "most bangable" list was pretty funny (from both perspectives).

I loved the way the Raja character said to the sister "Who are you????" Had me crackin' up.

The second episode was not bad either.

What I find fascinating is how the thread re: Cavemen has 100+ posts and this will be the 8th post on Aliens in America.

Just goes to show that most are not willing to give a show on CW a chance. It's a shame because not only is the HD PQ good, but the show isn't half bad. It's certainly 100x better than "Cavemen."

I liked it. Never had an urge to watch "Cavemen" (and I probably won't), BTW.

Maybe this show will survive on CW... Personally I like it better than "Everybody Hates Chris" (maybe it's because it has new materials).

The two bullies acting out in the hallway after the "locker room" incident was great! :D And the girl delivering her "lunch menu" message over the intercom at the end was a good capper for the show too (you skank ho-bag!)

Why is nobody (nobody here) giving it a chance?

When I bring this show up in the thread about best TV shows this fall there is no discussion, period. People are obviously giving shows on CW a chance (Reaper), why not Aliens in America, especially considering some publications saying it's actually good (Entertainment Weekly reviewed it prior to the season premiere and said it wasn't as campy as the premise may seem, that's what got me to check it out.)

I think it's a worth a torrent download since some storylines carry-over. You should watch it in order if possible.

Yes, if you can catch up on the first two episodes, do it. They are worth the watch.

If cannot see the first two, don't worry about - you'll get up to speed fast enough. This is an easy show to pick up in mid-stream.

And just a reminder - it is on tonight.

Same here, last ep was just as good as the first two...

but I don't get why on threads such as "Best New Shows this Fall" it doesn't get mentioned. I keep trying to mention, and nobody backs it up. Nobody even rips it as being a bad show. That tells me people aren't giving it a chance.

But even here Arrested Development had its fans. What I don't get is why AVS'ers aren't giving Aliens in America a chance. I still have yet to see anyone say that AIA "sucks."

Probably due to the terrible night it's on. Up against NBC, FOX and CBS sitcoms my schedule is more than full.

I've caught a few repeats and I thought it was entertaining, but it seemed to be treading the same territory as Chris and yet another show with narration isn't helping.

VisionOn
10-17-07, 05:48 PM
Yes it does matter. For example Monday night I'm recording Chuck and Prison Break so that's both tuners at work and Recording BBT on DVD -which I still have two weeks worth to watch yet. In total on Monday I'm recording 3 hours of NBC, 1 hour of FOX and 90 minutes of CBS.

I like my TV but I can only watch two to three hours at max each night. So while all that's on I still have to watch the shows from the previous week. Even if I could record everything I still wouldn't be able to watch it. That's just my schedule, when you factor in other AVS users with wives and different viewing habits (American Idol, Deal or No Deal etc.) it's just impossible to keep up.

This year is a busy schedule and CW is just being buried with returning favorites and bigger budgeted and more publicized shows on the big 4. I didn't even remember the new season starting on CW this year so I also missed Chris - which I've sacrificed. The weekend repeat is the only time I've seen AiA and that was mostly by accident, so I'll probably catch it when it's inevitably rerun next year.

I'm in on this one. I think I liked Raja's introduction by the teacher on his first day in school the best so far. "Is anybody else angry at Raja??"
I can record six feeds simultaneously this year :)
Don't know if I'll ever have time to watch it all but I record it. But I'll be watching this one and BBT. I am really close to dropping Chuck, but those hot babes keep pulling me back.

Heads-up! The CW will start airing encores of "AIA" this Sunday at 7:30PM ET/PT. From http://www.tvweek.com/blogs/james-hibberd/2007/10/cw_cancels_online_nation.php:

CW Cancels ‘Online Nation’

Four weeks into the fall season, the first casualty finally drops: The CW has pulled its user-generated video clip show “Online Nation” from its Sunday night slot. The CW will replace “Nation” with repeats of sitcom “Aliens in America.”

The most recent episode of “Nation” earned a 0.2 rating among adults 18 to 49. That number matched its lead-in, magazine show “CW Now.” But “Now” was pre-sold under a unique commercial-free sponsorship arrangement with Mediavest that has helped protect the show.

“Aliens” got off to a rough start in The CW’s Monday night comedy block, but this week showed some ratings growth in key demos.

I think CW as a network has a branding issue. I think it's amazing that Fox was able to resolve that issue (I think being in the lower numbered (below 13) channel mattered) fairly quickly. But for CW (formerly of WB/UPN), things have been slow...

Hong.

pappy97

I believe it has a branding issue too, but I still don't get why AVS'ers (not general public) are not, by in large, giving AIA a chance, but gave Reaper a chance. Time slot means jack because most here have a DVR...and now CW is going to show AIA repeats on Sundays, a better night for those of you hating on the timeslot.

Yeah because the show is going against football and other shows. I think the time slot has alot to do with this show not being so popular. I watched it online and liked it, plan on watching the next episode live.

Thoughts on last night's ep anyone?

I thought it was funny and brilliant as usual. I loved Raja ignoring the girl who "faux flirts" with losers as a mean joke (anyone else experienced that as a teen, I did). Also, the dad with his tanning cream on his face was hysterical. Besides the suit he reminded me of when Kramer in Seinfeld was dating a black woman and goes to meet her family after staying too long in a tanning booth and the dad of the black woman comments, "I don't see a white man, I see a damned fool!"

AIA has a good mix of humor dramedy, and good looking women. Is it me or is there an abundance of good looking (young) women on the show? Especially, and maybe to your surprise, I think Amy Pietz is really cute on the show. And by cute I meant hot. And by hot I mean very bangable.

Too bad the ratings are still not good. AIA should easily be the highest rated show on CW, but it's one of the lowest rated on its night. I wonder though if it is because it does not appeal to the UPN/WB demographic and is stuck between shows aimed at african-americans. Might be time to move it to its current re-run slot of Sunday night. Can't compete with Family Guy, but it's better than the Simpsons so it should air new eps Sunday's at 8pm.

And by hot I mean very bangable.I always thought Amy Pietz was pretty hot back when she played the neighbor on Caroline in the City. It has been a few years and she looks a little rougher now (could just be her "mom" look for the show) but she's still an attactive woman. But then, I do have a thing for dark eyed ladies...

I thought last night's ep was a notch or two below the other eps' so far. Still good, but not up to the same level for me.

Fred posted this on the Reaper thread. I figured it deserved to be here, too. You can safely get hooked on the show now:

CW sows more 'Reaper' scripts
By Nellie Andreeva The Hollywood Reporter

The CW's "Reaper" is the latest freshman series to receive an order for additional scripts.

The network on Thursday picked up three additional scripts from the dramedy starring Bret Harrison as a slacker working as the devil's bounty hunter.

Meanwhile, sources said the CW's freshman comedy "Aliens in America" is set to stay in continuous production after the completion of its 13-episode order in anticipation of a back order.

The rookie drama "Gossip Girl" was the first new series on any network this season to secure a full-season pickup.

"Reaper," from ABC Studios and the Mark Gordon Co., is one of the best-reviewed freshman series this fall but has had a slow start in the ratings in its post-"Beauty and the Geek" slot on Tuesday.

I was looking forward to last night's episode because it was where Raja was going to work at a convenience store, and while it was funny I wanted more dialogue between the store owner Mr. Patel and Raja.

Nevertheless, a couple of lines had me dying:
"If you steal from me I'll cut your Pakistani fingers off"
"East-facer"
"One-god"
"Oh Raja your boss called and wants you to come in. Something about a dirty cow eater..."

When will the CW realize that 8:30 Monday night is a bad timeslot for the show? The ratings are declining but the show's quality is not, IMHO.

Can anyone suggest a better timeslot? I was thinking Sunday night at 8:00pm (Which would follow the repeat of last week as they are doing it now). Many people I think would rather watch this than the Simpsons which is really bad these days. Or as I think I said before, just use the Sunday 7:30pm repeat slot to show new episodes. I'd rather have 8:00pm, but if they won't bulge this is still better than Monday 8:30pm.

Another GREAT slot, if the CW was willing to move Beauty and the Geek, is Tuesday at 8:00pm. It would go up against Bones, Biggest Loser, NCIS, and Cavemen. In this timeslot you would think people itching for a comedy fix would give AIA a chance, especially considering Cavemen is dreadful.

Or perhaps since CBS is a co-owner of CW, they could air AIA on CBS for a week or two and then give notice instructing people who enjoyed the show to continue watching on CW (on Sunday's at 8:00pm).

Thoughts anyone?

P.S. Not in HD, but for those of you wondering what the fuss is about you can watch eps for free online. http://www.cwtv.com/cw-video/aliens-in-america

Still looking for thoughts on post #35. I think it's a good idea (letting it air for a week or two on CBS, perhaps following Two and a Half Men).

New eps returned last night, 3/2. It appears the new eps will air on Sundays now. As usual, the ep was good, but of course, nobody watched it. I truly think I know how it felt to be an Arrested Development fan.

Enjoy the run of the eps while it lasts. No word on its return in the fall, but the dismal ratings don't help the cause (critics raved about it, but I guess people are still too closed-minded to give this a chance).

So would you agree that the show should be given a chance on CBS for a week or two in a post Two and a Half Men slot to see if people will give it a chance, and then have CBS tell viewers to watch more eps on CW?

So we should just let this good show die because people (even AVS'ers) refuse to give this show a chance?

Now they don't even have the excuse of it being Monday and up against a ton of other programming, but it may be too late as it is off everyone's radar.

I like the show, Pappy. A lot. But I'm not ready to take it to "circle jerk" level.

Justin deciding he wants to be a house husband when he grows up.
Raja accidentally shooting Gary in the ass with a crossbow.
Raja freaking out at the site of blood, even though his career placement highly recommended he become a doctor...

Hey, I was watching this show regularly. Now that it's come back, I found that CW has begun plastering a constant show promo on top of their already ridiculous network bug. Sorry, no thanks. I've got much better things to do than to have to try to watch a show through a bunch of BS advertising garbage. It's too bad because I thought it was a pretty decent show really...

I realize I am one of the few watching this, but 'The Muslim Card' episode last night was hilarious. Raja tries to be nice and let the stalker chick down easy, saying he can only marry a Muslim, so the stalker chick converts to Islam. *L* And the sex offender across the street saying he wouldn't have moved into the neighborhood if he had known Muslims lived there... Edgy humor, but it works for that show.

I hope so, but the fact that nobody here on AVSForum is willing to give it a chance just shows that the ratings won't be there, no matter how good the show is. (here on AVS there is a wide variety of shows people like from BSG to AI, but AiA always gets ignored).

I still stand by my idea that CBS should show a few eps of AiA on CBS in the post- 2 and a half men timeslot and then say, "if you want more, go to CW at such and such day and time."

I know a lot people liken this series to Wonder Years (but AIA is much funnier), and with that in mind, I found it interesting that last Sunday's new ep was directed by none other than Fred Savage. Another good ep too.
