View Full Version : How Easy/Difficult to Paint new AX200u Projector Case Black?

Guys, I'm ready to take the plunge on the AX200, BUT the DW has instructed me that the shelf I plan to use for placing the Panasonic Projector will NOT receive her approval unless the projector is black and blends in to the dark color scheme of the room.

So, would a spraypaint specifically designed for use on Plastic do the trick? I'm worried about affecting the electronics and optics so I realize this is NOT the optimum solution.

Does Panasonic offer the unit in Black? Sure would make my problem easier to solve. I'd even pay a modest premium.

All ideas appreciated!

Removing the shell and spray-painting it should be easy but I doubt Panasonic will honor the warranty if you have a problem when they see your custom paintjob. That's why I suggested a dark colored hushbox, which would hide it as was also suggested above.

Initially I thought this thread was about painting a screen case, then I read the thread.

With a screen case, if it wasn't offered in black, I'd recommend using black tape. I had planned that with my greywolf, but instead went with an HP case in black.

Black tape might still be an option for the panny. With the screen, I had planned to use black gorilla tape. Not sure I'd recommend that for the projector as that tape is super sticky and very difficult to remove. Black electrical tape would probably work well. You gotta be very careful and not block any airflow, obviously. If you took your time, it might turn out kinda nice and shouldn't void a warranty, but it'd be painful to have to remove the tape and clean it up for warranty repair and even more painful to have to camouflage it again.

Panasonic screwed up by not offering this in a dark, muted color. Who the hell wants a white HOME THEATER projector? That said, if you're sure this is the best projector for your room, budget, etc., I wouldn't let the color of the case sway your decision.

Did Panasonic make any models with a similar case that came in black? AE300/AE500/AE700/AE900?

My solution would be to install something else more .. 'gaudy' than the projector. A nice set of imposing tower speakers and a Barb Wire poster would do the trick. Bet she wouldn't even notice the projector then. :)

Mine HAD to be white.

If you do go with black spray paint, I would think one for painting gas grills would be best. It's designed to withstand high temperatures.

Good luck!

I am looking at my AX100, externally the same as the AX200. It is sitting on a shelf.

Because it is sitting on a shelf it would be extremely easy to make a little black box that would cover the projector and sit on the shelf. All you would have to do is leave openings for the lens, the vents, and the cables.

I have some black foam core mounting board that I bought from Walmart. With that and some black tape I could build a temporary one that would not look too bad in about twenty minutes.

What makes this tough is that I'm mounting my projector on the rear wall of my family room. The sofa is against this same wall and I'm trying to find a decorate/creative on wall cubby hole / shelf system that blends with the decor of the room and allows placement of the panny in one of the cubby holes. I'm even planning to cut a pocket into the stud / wall cavity so that the total distance that the projector projects into the room ( no pun intended ) is about 9-10 inches max. While building a box will conceal the PJ, I'm not sure that will be subtle enough. If I could obtain the Panny in the same black style case they make for the 1080p pj's that would be ideal. It's surprising to me that a mass market item at this price point wouldn't consider the need for both a while and black case for the two obvious mounting scenarios folks will encounter.

I wish I had a pick, but my first projector was on a shelf in the back of the room. I put up 3 identical and room matching shelves on the wall. The one in the middle was centered with the projector on it. Then one shelf on either side with a vase thing on each. It evened everything out nicely, We could pull the projector off the shelf and add a third vase thingy if we had people over.

I am pretty glad I got rid of that one(the women). Now I have an dedicated theater room.

LOL, I meant woman. I just got rid of that 1 women.

The three shelves were a pretty good look with nice dark wooden shelves and a dark red wall. I was surprised I thought of it.

In the spirit of the season, perhaps your wife could sew up a cute little black cat costume that fits snugly over the projector, leaving openings for air flow of course. That would be unique. I'd use stretch black velvet if I were doing this.

The AE1000 is black. Whether or not it is in your budget is another topic.

Unless the white PJ is going to mess up your perfect batcave because it'll have reflections, tell the wife to put a sock in it! They get to have their million and one shoes, purses, and what not. The least that you get to have is your own damn PJ the way you like it! Especially when it's only $1,300.

She still doesn't like that. Tell her you're getting the Sony VPL-VW60 or a Sim2.:D Those come black out of the box, no painting needed.

Reio-ta, you are cracking me up!!!! LOL... ok, I'm a wus. married 27 years, and some things aren't worth fighting over... great mom, great kids, and doesn't spend my money excessively, so if she insists I find a way to make the projector invisible, then I comply, ok?

Keep the sogo's coming!

What about the screen? How does that go invisible? Pull down? I much prefer fixed screens.

Electric, remote controlled drop down. It will be mounted on the back side of a structural ceiling beam that extends down from the flat ceiling approx. 8". The beam is conveniently located at the far end of the room exactly where the screen should be... can't go fixed because the exterior wall that sits 3 feet behind where the beam is located is a wall of french / glass doors.

If this were a dedicated media room I would OWN everything in it and do as I please, but since this is the family room I have to conceal this as much as possible.

I have the same issue as the OP. Difference is I am the picky one, not the wife. I went to great extremes to get the color scheme right in the dedicated HT, ceiling is all black, etc. No way in hell am I putting a bright white PJ on the ceiling now. grrrr!!!

Anyone painted their ax200 yet? Very tempted. White sticks out like a sore thumb on a bat cave :(
