View Full Version : Carpoolers in HD on ABC
Four guys who carpool to work every day come to savor their commute as the only safe time to commiserate about jobs, families - and secrets. Even though "what happens in the carpool stays in the carpool," they'll go beyond the boundaries of this fast-moving commuter confessional to get involved in each other's lives and develop friendships.
Gracen (Fred Goss, ABC's Sons & Daughters) is the unofficial leader of the carpool pack. As a professional mediator, he thinks he's a problem solver, but more often he's a causer. He seeks fairness in an unfair world, and so finds himself in the middle of situations because he's compelled to be there. In the pilot, Gracen is stunned to learn that his wife makes more money than he does, which sets his resolve to assert his manly authority.
Laird (Jerry O'Connell, Crossing Jordan) is Gracen's playboy dentist neighbor and best friend. He thinks his life is an unending quest for stories - and women. In the middle of a messy divorce, he allows himself to live a little and taunts the other carpoolers with the freedom of his near-single status. He would never admit that he secretly misses marriage. Laird constantly leads the carpoolers into adventures, but once there, he isn't sure what to do.
Aubrey (Jerry Minor, Mr. Show) is a sweet but intense pushover at the bottom of the family food chain. The daily ride has become the only peaceful time in his life. Forty-five minutes, two times a day - he needs the carpool the most. Always quick to come to the carpoolers' aid, he believes in the brotherhood almost to a fault. Only the carpoolers know he's boiling inside, because "in the carpool lane, no one can hear you scream."
Dougie (Tim Peper, The Guiding Light) is the eager newlywed. He doesn't know all the rules of the Carpooler Society, often breaks them, and has to have the ways of the world explained to him by his tribal elders, the three other carpoolers. He and his wife, Cindy, are the perfect modern couple, but as you get to know them, you start to see their cracks. Dougie is the guy who seems to have it all together, yet he's drawn to the carpoolers for a little excitement. The carpoolers will both instigate problems for Dougie and help him deal with the realities of life to come.
Additional stars include Faith Ford (Hope and Faith) as Leila Brooker, Alison Munn (That '70s Show) as Cindy and comedian T. J. Miller (The Standard Deviants) as Marmaduke Brooker.
MasterWick 10-03-07, 11:27 AM Jerry O'Connell is the only actor that makes this show watchable (ok, almost watchable) --IMO. I might watch it a few more times to see if this goes anywhere.
Chuck Smith 10-03-07, 11:40 AM I tuned into this show because Fred Gross is in it. (I was a huge fan of Sons & Daughters before ABC yanked it ) It seems somewhat entertaining. I will tune in next week.
I caught a brief scene with Faith Ford, and thought that was decent.
Also, I think I heard Rebecca Romijn, Jerry O'Connell's new wife, will be making an appeareance. That always gets my attention...
Slordak 10-03-07, 12:10 PM This show is very... quirky and over the top.
Regarding the first episode... Is the plot actually supposed to make sense? When Gracen's wife (played by Kelly Ripa, I believe) announces that she "just flipped a house twice" and later, a third time, I was like "Huh!?...". By definition, a flip is the act of buying a house, doing improvements, and selling it. Hence, once you've completed the flip by selling it, it can't be flipped again... Unless you decided to buy it back from the person you just sold it to and then immediately put it up for sale again; completely senseless.
I then later had the exact same reaction to the notion of her bank account balance being temporarily swollen by "the mortgage company's money". The person buying the house pays whomever holds the title (i.e. they use the money to purchase the title), which is the bank holding the previous mortgage, not the person paying that mortage.
So either it doesn't make any sense, or she's purposely lying about what she does to make money and it's going to be a later plot point...?
CPanther95 10-03-07, 12:18 PM My wife's cousin works on this show. (hair)

I think it was meant to be goofy. The plot already notioned that the Husband was feeling threatened by the money she was making, then she announces she flipped it, flipped it again, and flipped it a 3rd time. If once didn't jab the dagger in the heart, the third one did. I don't think it was supposed to make sense, it was there as a token to depress the husband even more.
Although not the best script, nor the funniest script, I enjoyed it MUCH more than I had anticipated. I'll give it another couple weeks to see where it goes.
I loved how the black guy jumped back out the window when he left the house, instead of just using the front door. Little humor like that is what I love, so I dug this show.
barth2k 10-03-07, 12:39 PM Also, I think I heard Rebecca Romijn, Jerry O'Connell's new wife,
Rebecca Romijn is married to Verne?
why does the universe hate me?
lacombo 10-05-07, 12:22 AM it is indeed one wasteful hr with this and Cavemen.
can we get a LOST rerun going...
generalpatton78 10-06-07, 04:27 AM I have to say I enjoyed it, and I came into it with a predisposition that I was going to hate it. For me what saved the whole thing was the cast chemistry. I've seen the actor who plays the African American in something else and he's great.
nikeykid 10-06-07, 04:33 AM best part of the pilot episode was the bullies with the sushi.
mbarloewen 10-06-07, 11:37 AM I tuned in because I too was a big fan of Sons and Daughters and enjoy Fred Gross.
I thought the episode was meh. I felt like the show couldn't figure out what kind of tone it was going for with the mixture of quirkiness and over the top oddness.
But...like all shows I try out... I will watch at least another couple of episodes.
tonybradley 10-17-07, 10:37 AM I guess I'm by myeself on this, but I laughed hysterically at last night's episode. My wife hasn't seen it until last night and we cracked up. She said "Great, another show I need to DVR".
wmessin 10-17-07, 10:53 AM I watched it for the first time last night. I totally had forgotten that Fred Gross was doing another show.
I loved it. we both cracked up too. of course I fear it's just going to be another show I like that gets canned too quickly. Such is life in TV this day and age I guess.
Slordak 10-18-07, 02:58 PM The best part of this show continues to be Marmaduke, the gigantic son.
So there was a new episode tonight, not that anyone has been watching or planned to. My DVR picked it up (seriously, I was desperate for newness. Nothing is new with the writer's strike going on!)
Tonights episode was actually very hilarious. I was laughing out loud at some of the jokes. Sure, the show is pointless, and probably wont be renewed, but it was good for a few laughs in this starved entertainment economy.

My wife and I are desperate for new, scripted shows. This week we were excited to see Carpoolers listed to be recorded (/pretty sad). Yesterday's episode was one the of the better shows and quite funny to add.
Another new episode of Carpoolers tonight, and I have to admit that it was very funny. Its getting to the point where I really hope it sticks around and doesn't get canned.
mike7_01 01-23-08, 06:57 AM I think that the show is entertaining in a mindless sort of way. It can be a little over the top which is usually not my thing, but it's a nice break from the shows that require your full attention such as Lost, CSI, cavemen, etc.
Seriously though, my wife and I actually liked cavemen even better than carpoolers.
CycloneGT 01-23-08, 09:29 AM Is cavemen extinct or just on writers hiatus?
tonybradley 02-01-08, 12:10 PM I kind of forgot about carpoolers and noticed that I had two new ones (last week and this week) the other night and watched them.
This has to be one of the most hilarious prime time shows I've seen. I rate this one with The Office. I laugh almost non stop while watching Carpoolers.

I couldn't agree with you more. I think the show is laugh out loud funny. But it will probably go down the same path as Arrested Development. A show to smart and funny for the masses.
I like this show a lot... then they invite Rebecca to appear as Jerry's divorced wife (Jerry was invited to Ugly Betty to play, yes you guess it, someone interested in Rebecca's character).
Hey remember Conan O'Brien also being in love with Rebecca? then she married Stamos and then Conan was angry at that fact (me 2).
Marmaduke is so hilarious....
Turbo Ron 02-01-08, 05:38 PM I did not even know carpoolers is still on the air. The first eposode they filmed my house as the main house. The one with the large circular driveway and scenes at the entry. They never used it again in any other eposodes
I've enjoyed these last few episodes, because this is one of the funniest shows on TV right now. It has really grown from its first few episodes.
The actor who plays Marmaduke, T.J. Miller, also plays the part of Hud in the movie Cloverfield. He was great in that movie, too, as the comedic relief.
ABC officially canceled "Carpoolers" today.
nandoal28 02-11-08, 07:27 PM ABC officially canceled "Carpoolers" today.
Sad day in my household.
How many episodes left? This show was becoming truly great.
EDIT: "Great" meaning, "good enough to spend 22 minutes watching".
Back to Cavemen, I guess.
That was whacked today, too, Ken.
TeeJay1952 02-12-08, 12:36 PM I think we should all send the network execs cars to protest!
There are still 4 episodes left, including one tonight. I plan on watching!
I say rather than buying executives new cars, we burn things on their car engines so they crash on the freeway! Taking a page from Jericho, all while showing those execs how we really feel!
