View Full Version : Audio Streamer Alarm Clock with Cool remote?
DReborn 10-04-07, 07:55 AM Well hi there. =) I have a somewhat odd request. I live in a somewhat large condo with my home theater in my living room. I want something that will stream music that is stored on my NAS (or other computers) into my bedroom. Id also like something that is capable of playing internet radio, rhapsody, etc. lastly, it'd be great if it was an alarm clock. Oh and can it have a really slick remote a la Sonos? super.
I first was going to get an ipod dock but it feels so limited. The one that caught my eye was the George iPod dock. Very slick looking and has a great remote. Can't stream audio from my network and has no internet radio/rhapsody connections.
then i started looking at the Sonos system but i don't want to hook up speakers to the zoneplayer in the bedroom. Want a all-in-one component. Also, i think the system is a tad overkill since i just want to stream into one room. That said, the remote, the access to network music, the rhapsody support...it's perfect. But of course, it doesn't have the alarm clock funtionality.
am i dreaming? any other options?
thanks!! =)
sansp00 10-04-07, 10:31 AM Take a look at the Roku Soundbridge Radio ... Does the job nicely for me.

DReborn 10-04-07, 03:10 PM yep, i like where your heads at but im not a big fan of the remote. i played around with the sonos and the Chestnut Hill George remote so i think im spoiled...
right now though, i think the roku is the piece to beat.
sansp00 10-04-07, 10:44 PM Yeah I guessed that, but if you have a pocket pc or something like that, people wrote nice apps that act just like the sonos remote. Check out the roku forum to find out more.

DReborn 10-04-07, 11:39 PM so after a little research and a very, very helpful sales rep from a wonderful company--I've decided to hold off any purchase for another 30 days or so (technically 28). =)
if anyone is in my same boat...I recommend you do the same.
I'll post back when i can...
Major Headache 10-06-07, 12:05 AM Sounds like something cool is on the horizon and I'll be interested to see what it is. However, if it's not what you're hoping for, you might want to check out a slimdevices squeezebox paired with one of the remotes listed here:

I'm using mine with my Nokia 770 and am quite pleased with the results. And no programming or hacking is required. You can get those Nokias for under $150 all day on ebay. I got mine for under 100, and when it's not being a remote you can use it for other cool web/email tasks.
DReborn 10-06-07, 09:17 PM Major, good idea and i know there is the new Nokia N800 coming out in the next month so that's definitely a possibility. I like that the Nokia N800 could be used as something more than "just a remote." I'll check it out.
the setup im thinking about will still cost roughly 500-700 so a slim devices and the new nokia n800 would probably be even cheaper.
good stuff... =)
DReborn 10-06-07, 09:27 PM last thought would be that the slimdevices setup would not have the alarm feature like the sonos...
Major Headache 10-06-07, 10:33 PM Yeah, actually it does :)
I know version 3 has one:

Not sure about previous generations.
DReborn 10-17-07, 04:18 AM ok, well i stand corrected. =)
see, this is why i love avs...everybody know's their stuff.
then i change my final to concern! The product i am looking at has a very impressive controller that is built directly for operating the rest of the product. Im sure that buying an internet tablet or even using your iphone would "work" and do a pretty darn good job on the slimserver side, it might not be a slick nor as stable. On the other hand, i am sure you could customize the heck out of slimserver.
so many choices...so little money left...

FYI, the Roku units also support some of those units ... Also, any UPnP control point will work. The info is spreaded a bit around, but it's there.
Just in case people thought Slim was the only thing out there ...
