I am curious as to what may be wrong with some as-is dvd writers I bought on the big auction site:

First is a Sony RDR-GX330 (FYI: If you enable the power save setting these things consume virtually NO power when off!). Of the eight of these I have bought, so far I've only been able to find something wrong with one of them. Something is wrong with the DVD drive itself. It can't recognize any writable media. It will play most pre-recorded DVDs. The first layer anyway. It will frequently fail when it has to switch to the second layer. The laser looks plenty strong. It seems able to focus properly. What usually goes out in the drive itself?

The second is a Panasonic DMR-EZ27. When you plug it in it does the walking half '0' for a bit then the flashing "12:00 a". So far so good. If you try to turn it on it just says "HELLO". Forever. Nothing is displayed via composite. None of the buttons do anything. It does make some noise from the DVD drive shortly after you power it on. And if you unplug either the IDE cable or the drive power cable it will show "U99" on the display. Could this thing have somehow got confused and be waiting for something from the HDMI port?
