View Full Version : Spike HD
By David Lott, Special to TelevisionWeek
Spike TV said it plans to launch a high-definition channel next year.
The MTV Networks-owned company that caters to young adult males will debut the HD simulcast of Spike TV in the first quarter of 2008, said David Schwarz, a company spokesman.
The high-def channel, which will be carried by DirecTV, will not feature any original programming. Current Spike TV shows include “Muscle Car,” the drama “The Kill Point” and the reality series “Murder.”
In the first quarter, some of the channel’s programs, such as the reality game show “Pros vs. Joes” and the pro wrestling series “TNA Impact!,” will be shot in high-def, with the remainder upconverted to HD. By the second quarter, Spike expects nearly all of its original programs to be shot in HD.
Spike TV and the Ultimate Fighting Championship organization agreed to a two-year extension of their strategic partnership in March 2006, which includes new seasons of the reality series “The Ultimate Fighter,” “Ultimate Fight Night Live” fight cards and episodes of “UFC Unleashed.”
“We know that our demographic—men 18 to 49—are guys who are interested in technology and would love to see UFC fights in high definition,” Mr. Schwarz said. “We want to bring that to them.”
Spike TV’s move to high-def likely will provide a bit of competition for male-oriented offerings from up-and-comer HD network Mojo, including gambling-focused show “I Bet You” and the international drinking tour program “Three Sheets.” Mojo, which is owned by Comcast iN Demand Holdings, Cox Communications and the Time Warner Entertainment–Advance/Newhouse partnership, has announced a crop of new shows debuting before the end of the year.
This would be more interesting if the announcement was about new, actually watchable shows coming to Spike.
In the first quarter, some of the channel’s programs, such as the reality game show “Pros vs. Joes” and the pro wrestling series “TNA Impact!,” will be shot in high-def, with the remainder in stretch-o-vision.
There I fixed it:D
VisionOn 10-05-07, 10:02 AM This would be more interesting if the announcement was about new, actually watchable shows coming to Spike.
It would be better too if the writer had actually not made two big errors about The Kill Point. It's not only an original Spike show but it's also not a current show either.
Oh how I would've LOVED to have seen some Vintage "Rotating Surfboard of Death" , "Big Brass Balls" and "Sinkers and Floaters" bits in HD.
For shame....indeed......:D

Well, we will be getting HD content from an MTV network now, maybe MTV, VH1, and CMT next?
DiCecco 01-05-08, 12:42 PM i am watching the power block in HD now on Spike via Directv HD and it looks very good. Now I wish that they would start showing their StarTrek shows in HD.
jefbal99 01-05-08, 01:19 PM Great HD bug, small and very non obtrusive
petergaryr 01-05-08, 02:01 PM Checked out Extreme 4x4. Very nice quality. Yet another sign that true HD is appearing on the new channels.
yea its good to see HD content finally on SPIKE!!!
is it listed on the GUIDE with the HD logo???
hopefully TNA will be in HD soon!!!
and i think someone mentioned on dbstalk that ST was not recorded in HD so i dont know... only ENTPERISE i think was shot in HD.. i dont know all the details but i'm sure someone up here knows all the details on ST and HD...
NetworkTV 01-05-08, 04:47 PM and i think someone mentioned on dbstalk that ST was not recorded in HD so i dont know... only ENTPERISE i think was shot in HD.. i dont know all the details but i'm sure someone up here knows all the details on ST and HD...
The original Star Trek, which was shot and (I believe) edited on film, is being remastered for HD. I'm not sure if Spike will be airing that version or not when it becomes available.
here is the thread where there talking about ST in HD
http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=101369
thread 13 starts the topic i think..
Unfortunately, the only Star Trek show shot for HD was Enterprise, and HDNET has the exclusive HD broadcast rights (which is why Sci-Fi's Monday marathon is 4:3 letterboxed in a 16:9 pillar). Also, the only Trek series that can (and has been) remastered in HD is TOS, as it was originally shot and mastered on film.
Next Gen, DS9, and Voyager were all shot on film, but the effects sequences and all other post production on these three series were completed in SD to save money. :(
Marcus Carr 01-06-08, 03:53 AM So the current Spike TV HD is basically a "placeholder". Probably won't show up on cable until its "official" launch. Of course we are already in the first quarter so it could by any time now.
hiltsy855 01-07-08, 07:30 AM Musclecar looked pretty good in HD. Courtney Hanson looks even more spectacular in HD - smokin! The bad news - since SpikeHD launched they've been showing the SD shows (like Horsepower) in the proper OAR but I saw one over the weekend that was stretched. I hope they don't continue that.
petergaryr 01-07-08, 07:45 AM Well, the CSI marathon yesterday was in OAR (4:3). The ones I saw were from 2000. I couldn't remember when they started filming that series in HD, but they are listing CSI as one of their HD broadcasts....so I assume the later episodes will be broadcast in HD.

If I remember correctly when looking at the DVD sets of CSI, the first 2 seasons weren't even filmed in widescreen so I doubt they are in HD. I believe starting season 3 and beyond they were shot in HD and thus available in widescreen as well. I could be wrong though.
generalpatton78 01-07-08, 09:37 AM I want Game Head in HD!!

CSI has been in HD from very first episode.
keithaxis 01-07-08, 10:33 AM CSI has been in HD from very first episode.
That is correct. I bought my HD set in 2000 and most CBS drama's and sitcoms were in HD back in 2000 including CSI...

petergaryr 01-07-08, 11:21 AM CSI has been in HD from very first episode.
Well, then, that is odd since Spike was broadcasting actual HD content earlier.
Well, then, that is odd since Spike was broadcasting actual HD content earlier.
No it is not odd. They simply do not have HD copies. Lots of HD channels have the same problem. A&E HD besides CSI Miami does not replay other shows in HD, for example Crossing Jordan.

Nobody watches UFC?

If you've got MHD, you already get HD content from all three.
The high-def channel, which will be carried by DirecTV, will not feature any original programming.

I believe they were saying that the HD channel will be a simulcast of the SD channel, and will not have unique content.
jason10mm 03-11-08, 04:16 PM Hang on, did that initial announcement mentiona reality show called "MURDER"? That is either the greatest thing ever or the lowest point of television of all time. Guess it depends on who the contestants are :)

Any chance somebody could post information Re: Spike HD's 2009 HD content lineup?
I'm supposed to receive Spike HD in 2 days and i'm just wondering what HD content they will have. Thanks.
Tele-TV 03-30-09, 03:25 PM ^^ The only show I watch on Spike (HD) is "1,000 Ways to Die." Its a half hour show that new episodes premiere Sunday night, like at 7pm? or 730pm? Sorry I can't be of more help.
Young C 03-30-09, 04:01 PM Tele-TV,
You're saying 1,000 ways is broadcasted in HD?
That would be awesome.
hdtvjunkie247 03-30-09, 06:48 PM TNA Impact! (wrestling) is also broadcast in HD on Spike.
Young C 04-10-09, 08:43 AM I'll clear this up,
Spike-HD broadcasts 1,000 ways to die in HDTV.
Saw it for the first time last night.
I didn't think Spike TV HD was a channel I'd watch when we switched to DirecTV. But I like watching the old episodes of CSI in HD and catching cool movies like Star Wars or First Blood in HD. If only they were commercial free.
Tele-TV 04-19-09, 06:08 PM I'll clear this up,

I apologize. I forgot about this thread. What do you think about the show?
dcowboy7 04-19-09, 06:37 PM but unfortunately they dont show either Star Wars trilogy & alot of others in OAR.
why are they such OAR haters ?
lowrider1340 04-20-09, 11:13 AM when is spike hd coming to fios anybody have info on this thanks
Young C 04-20-09, 01:09 PM It's cool.
I like it. some of the reenactments are silly. A lot of the women featured on the show are pretty, as well. Some of the stomach animations gross me out. ha
Tele-TV 04-30-09, 12:20 PM ^^
Your right, some of the girls are pretty. The season ended not to long ago, but there slowly showing repeats. You should try to catch the scenarios (they were in 2 different shows), one where a lady asks her husband to knock down a bee-hive. And the other, where a lody bought a carrot from the for you know what. :D
Young C 04-30-09, 01:29 PM Yeah, I caught them. The whole carrot thing was weird. Reminded me of FX's "Testees" episode 2 titled "Pill for Men" where Peter puts a carrot __ her you know what.
"Testees" Pill for Men (2008)

Tele-TV 06-03-09, 12:00 AM ^^ Never heard of that show "Testees" into you mentioned it to me. It sure has a funny name,
1. Does anyone watch that show "Deadliest Warrior"?
So far I only seen the one where it was the Shaolin Monk vs the Maori (sp?) (Siomioan like warriors), Warrior. Very interesting stuff.

Hey Young C. There are at least 2 new episodes of this great show from this (2010) year. And at least one episode from late December 2009 I did not know about until now.
How do you like the show?
Young C 01-13-10, 10:22 PM Good deal, I've saw those episodes.
I like the show. The women, the puns, and the weird accidental deaths are amusing.
Tonight's episode titled "Gratefully Dead" was good. The first death, 9 thermometers breaking inside somebody's anal cavity
Tele-TV 01-13-10, 11:35 PM ^^ The show is funny for some reason. :D I foinf myself laughing out loud sometimes and some words like stupid and idiot.
Long story short, I wasn't watch tonights episode with complete focus. I hat sitting through commericals and waiting for my DVR room to be freed-uo for me to wat it.
But anyways I saw that 9 thermometer segment and thought it was amusing when I heard the glass shatter.
shortkud 01-14-10, 02:49 AM Has anyone else checked out Blue Mountain State? I liked it.
Lone Wanderer 01-14-10, 02:51 AM Spike HD good for TNA! and MMA!
and that's it!
Tele-TV 01-14-10, 07:23 AM Has anyone else checked out Blue Mountain State? I liked it.
I have not checked it out yet. When I saw the commercial come on yesterday, I thought iw was for a new movie, lol. I think Monday OR Wednesday is a new episode. I have my DVR set for the first time for this show. The episode I'm talking about is the pocket rock**t episode. Looks hilarious.
Doom878 01-14-10, 08:29 AM Hows the quality for Entourage? Looks pretty bad in the ads.
NetworkTV 01-14-10, 09:04 AM but unfortunately they dont show either Star Wars trilogy & alot of others in OAR.
why are they such OAR haters ?
Because it's a channel called "Spike"? It's like asking why more Walmart customers don't exercise better fashion sense...
shortkud 01-15-10, 04:11 AM Hows the quality for Entourage? Looks pretty bad in the ads.
They are showing it from the first season so its still 4:3. Looked alright.
Tele-TV 02-14-10, 06:50 PM Good deal, I've saw those episodes.

I know we talk about "1,000 Ways to Die," a bit. And it seems like you like the show. You should check out the other Spike show in HD,
"MANswers" (Faster, Harder). Its really thought provoking, :D lol.
http://www.spike.com/show/22792
Young C 02-17-10, 10:37 PM I've watching MANswers right now. It's OK, I like 1000 ways to die more.
Good episode of 1,000 ways to die tonight.
Tele-TV 04-21-10, 09:57 PM Sorry to be a loser with the late reply dear Young C. Yeah I agree with you in regards to 1,000 ways to Die being a better show than MANswers.
Spike has a new show, 1,000 Ways to Lie but I have not seen it yet.
Have you seen it yet? What do you think of it?
One of the recent segments of 1,000 Die that is sticking in my head is the one where the guy steals the ladies groceries (I believe) and runs into a off car wash. The guy does not know the thief is in there and starts the car wash. The thief gets disoriented and impales! head on air house spout and head just keeps getting bigger and bigger until it finally explodes.

Also Deadliest Warrior Season premiere I believe was yesterday (Tuesday).
Peace out friend.
Young C 04-22-10, 03:02 PM Hey there.
Is 1,000 ways to lie a real program? They only aired it once. I've seen it, I liked it, it had some very strange lies. A women giving birth to a rat/rabbit, body part filled with liquid drugs, etc. (I'm at work right now, on my lunch hour. Hopefully the above text isn't too racy.)
I've seen that episode with the robber at the car wash. Pretty good.
Take care T-TV
Timpanogos 08-27-10, 05:01 PM Several days ago I noticed that CSI in the afternoon had some funky start times. Turns out that Spike has increased the programming "hour" for CSI to one hour and 20 minutes on some of their afternoon screenings specifically to insert more (interminable) advertising. Dudes must not have read the latest news report about people starting to drop satellite and cable. This is just one more reason why after 14 years with Dish the programming is becoming of less and less of worth to my family. Netflix Blu-Ray (the ultimate 'a la carte) and internet streaming are looking better and better every day...

Not just CSI; many of Spike's start times are off across the board. The six Star Wars films aired during the last two months and will air again next week. I found that, for a given film, even starting the recording 30 minutes earlier than the announced schedule and ending 30 minutes later wasn't guaranteed to completely record it; 45 minutes proved to be (barely) enough.
hdtvjunkie247 08-28-10, 10:02 AM Yeah, I've noticed that with Spike, I was wondering why a CSI scheduled for 1PM was coming on at approximately 12:56. At least they don't do this stuff with TNA or UFC. Also, I know that TV Land isn't HD, but I've noticed it on that network as well.
Like for this afternoon TV Land has the following start times for shows according to my IPG:
The Nanny- 12:00-12:34pm
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition: 12:34-2:47pm
She's Got the Look: 2:47-3:53pm
Andy Griffith- 3:53-4:26pm
Andy Griffith-4:26-5:00pm
The rest of the day is on-the-clock. TV Land likes to call it off-the-clock programming, where programs don't start on the hour or half hour. It's a way to fit in more ads.
