I wonder if someone out there can help. When I try to play a recorded disc the following message appears on the TV screen
'Cannot read. Please check disc'
When I try to record to a disc the following appears
'This is a non-recordable disc. Cannot record'

This is on discs that I have recorded to before with no problems. Could this be some kind of cleaning problem although in the manual nothing is mentioned about cleaning anything.

It cannot hurt to clean the discs, but also consider running a cleaner disc in the machine. Dust can build up inside and hinder performance.

If your mechanically inclined open the unit and see if you can get to the lens ... q-tip and alcohol to clean the lens helps alot more then cleaning discs do ... if that doesn't fix it, you probably have some issue with the DVD mechanism and its possible it needs to be replaced.
