Does anyone else notice the volume cutting in and out on CBS HD? I have a SA8300HD box and am using hdmi out into my Onkyo 805 receiver. About every 5 mintues the DD signal drops out, silence for a couple of seconds, and then PLII shows up on my receiver. I've been noticing this for several weeks. This is the only channel doing this, so I don't believe its my setup. I'm watching my VOL's kick Georgia's a** and these cutouts are driving me crazy.

Knowing your location and what station you are watching would be helpful. Also check your local thread for more info to see if others in your area have the same problem.

I'm in Houston. I have the SA8300 connected my Pioneer television via HDMI. I have seen brief dropouts on several channels. It happens on both HD and SD.

CBS has been dropping to 2.0 stereo during football games just before they go to NY for an in game update. Then when it comes back they switch back to 5.1. Depending on how your receiver deals w/ these switches it can cause annoying pops and pauses/delays. Unfortunately the drop to 2.0 seems to happen a few minutes before the update, and if a big play occurs its cancelled and it goes back to 5.1. This creates the very annoying situation you mentioned. ESPN and ABC do not switch outputs when they go for updates, so im not sure why CBS cant do something to remedy this.

Comcast Atlanta.

I think the reason CBS is different is metadata. Their sources flagged as 2.0 will cause the station AC3 encoder to change from 3/2L to 2/0. Normally this happens between program elements in black but it appears here to happen during the show. A quick fix is to keep the flag as 3/2L during an update even though the audio changes from 5.1 to 2.0, but the obvious upgrade needs to be 5.1 through the studio. Other benefits would be that talking heads will be mixed to center and transition sound effects can use the surrounds. I'm a bit surprised this wasn't part of the HD studio upgrade.

ABC does not use metadata to control the station's DD encoder so it's not an issue.

They are having audio issues on the Tenn @ Tampa Bay game today.

Please post this in the NFL On CBS topic at the top of the forum, thanks.
