View Full Version : Do I really need an upscaling dvd player or will my Acer PH530 upscale just fine?

I picked up an Acer PH530 this past week and love it. Tons better than the epson home 20...

I watched alot of video's and am wondering whether or not it is worth upgrading to an upscaling dvd or i eill be just wasting my money.

I have a home theater PC that I have set to native 1280x720 so it matches the projector. It feeds in through the vga. I have played some DVDs on it using windvd which should upscale it. when compared to my phillips dvp642 dvd player at progressive output, I saw really no difference. Maybe actually a little better out of the dvd player.

Will I get that much of a difference going with an upscaler or am I probably letting the acer upscale instead? I remember reading that one of the differences between a "home theater" projector and a "business" projector is the quality of up and down scaling. Is that what I am seeing from the Acer's handling 480p?

(I really expect there to be a huge diff between the 480p out DVd and my 720p out on the HTPC.... bit disappointed in that.)

Not that the 720p is not tens times better than my 480p. I watched FF7 Advent Children... OMG!

Well your HTPC could look a lot better but you'd need to use a very complicated program called ffdshow.

An upscaling DVD player could make a difference on some scenes. I could probably point out all the flaws that a good upscaling chip would correct, but then you would actually notice them. So just enjoy the picture on your current DVD player if you like it and don't worry about it.

I agree but I do have an Oppo 980=H set at 720p and I have been using that dvd player instead of my Panansonic dvd player that's 480p..

I'm really not sure what prices are now, but I purchased a HD-DVD player from the Jungle for under two bills with 8 free HD-DVDs. I think it upscales standard DVD better than most upscaling DVD players, but maybe not as well as an OPPO.
You do get the bonus of HD though.

I just got my ph530 as well. What Im finding is that the movie itself is making more of a difference than anything (Im using the xbox360 vga to upscale). For example I see allot of noise when I watch the first matrix movie, but when I watch Pirates of the carribean it looks fantastic. I think they compressed the matrix movie onto one dvd and reduced its quality, where my pirates dvd has 2 disks and not so compressed. But I would use an external upscaler vs just the ph530.

I suggest blowing $199 or so on a Toshiba HD-A2. You get some "free" HD movies too. Personally, I wouldn't waste any money on standard DVD anymore. It will still up convert your current standard DVD collection adequately, but after watching a few HD DVD movies, you'll probably find yourself not playing your old DVDs much.
