I still don't have a working projector but for sure will get it this week. Anyways, on my RPTV( which is 1.78 or 16:9), when I watch 2:35 movies, I get top and bottom black bars. I would like to build a screen that is 2.35 in ratio. What I would like to happen assuming the height is 46", is that when I watch 2.35 movies, it would also fill the whole 54". How do you address guys in crt projector? I don't care about 16:9 movies since I can mask the screen in both sides.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

What, do you want this on your RP? Do you have a zoom option? That should work but you'll lose some picture on the sides. Other than that, you're screwed.
Or do you mean you want a constant height when using your front projector? I don't think there's any good way to get constant height from a single crt projector. Digital - yes, crt - no, unless you're willing to get a second crt projector and blend them. This is the absolute best way to get a constant 2.35 but it's expensive (although there's one moderately priced solution, if you think $1,400 is a moderate price) and a big pain to set up.
So that's my answer. Probably someone a whole lot smarter in these matters will tell me how wrong I am.

I just mentioned RPTV to share what I was seeing everytime I watch a 2.35 movie. So I was hoping to find a solution that will allow me to watch a 2.35 movie on my CRT while maintaining the height even when watching a 1.78 movie. I'm still a bit confused with the raster since I don't configure them on RPTV. But with CRT pj, I always see people(on this forum) recommend to use the maximum raster on other threads. Once I see that line, I just huh or what?. :)
I was surfing a while ago and looks like Alan C was doing a 2.35 on his CRT before. Link is found here (http://archive2.avsforum.com/avs-vb/archive/index.php/t-539632.html).
For blending, I did a lot of experiments last year with VLC. However, I was only using 2 19" VGA monitors. But yeah, it was so cool. I'm thinking of setting each pj at 1440x1080. That means, I will have 2880/1080 total combined width.
If I find another pj, I will do that. I'm just scared though with 2 crt pj @ 143 lbs each hooked to the ceiling joist of my basement.

Just try to maximize the raster and the image within the raster verticaly to get as much use of the phosphor. Set the image to a 2.35 movie . then just mask the sides for 16x9 movies this is the easiest way but you'll be losing resolving power for your 16x9 content but this wont matter if most material you watch will be 2.35/2.40.
But if you plan to blend later just be carefull of your contrast, you dont want to get a 2.35 wear on the tube then the blend on that projector will show that wear.

I know its extremely common to create 'widescreen' cinema screen and that, and in the proper theartres they have motorised curtains which can adjust to suit different ratios, however, whats the idea behind making a screen a fixed ratio like that? 16:9 format then doesnt allow 4:3 material to be properly displayed in the full screen. You either have the top n bottom being off the screen, or you have black bars either side.
I've made my screen setup to 4:3, and just have the typical black bars on top n bottom .. makes the image nice n center with the curtains either side of the screen.
