It is black and upconverts both dvd and vhs over the same HDMI cable. I am looking to save some space with a decent upconvertor.

I am concerned about upconverting VHS tapes for obvious reasons and the fact that my hdmi to rgb through an HDfury will only allow for 1080i (rgb port restrictions of some kind). 1080i would probably make the vhs look grainy ????? As I said I cannot scroll the resolution like those of you with actual hdmi tvs can. I guess I could use component for 480p but that would kind of defeat the one cable positive.

Who has used this unit and what was the upconverting feature like on both sides ?

I realize it has no tuner. I don't want one. Thx

Hi Jetmeck:

Just wondering if you would take the time to answer a question about the JVC DR-MV78B DVD recorder / VHS player . . .

e-cost.com has this unit (refurbished) for $99 and I was thinking of getting it for my husband to transfer old home movies (and possibly old purchased movies) to DVD. He'll be doing this on an older TV.

Do you think this is a good unit for his projects? on an older TV?

Thank you very much in advance for your opinion. Also, what do you think about a refurbished unit?

Thanks again!!!

I don't know why, but for whatever reason we seem to get very few posts from JVC users. Another forum I visit has a few older JVC DVDR users posting but I don't know what's up with the newer ones. (they must be a quiet bunch, or sell very few machines). Sounds like a good price for a combo recorder though. JVC used to make great VHS's, that I know.

Yes a silent bunch if there here. I have had JVC tvs and audio equipment and it was high quality. However I have found a lot of bad reviews of their combo units on the web. But the features of this one make it possible worth trying. Only major downside I see is no S-VIDEO IN. i DON'T NEED A TUNER EITHER.

I was considering that dual-deck JVC myself. The one I was looking at was the one with the digital tuner built-in, but after seeing that $300 price tag, I'm sort of wincing. I would go for the one without a tuner and hook up my STB on it, but with DRM issues, I don't know how well the JVC would record with digital cable. I'm debating whether it's worth doing QAM with the $300 JVC dual-deck, or to go with the tunerless one and take my chances hooking up my digital cable box to it.

If I were in your case I'd take the cheaper "tunerless" one, record from line out of your STB and just figure on buying a $100 filter to remove any CP your STB may put out. I would think the tunerless one + filter would still be less than the tuner'd one, that still would only be able to get QAM in the clear(probably not much).
At least that's what I would do.

Anybody have one of these yet ?You *might* be able to find some info on it here in the archives.

If you've got a Costco membership, they supposedly were selling the tunerless D-VR600 Toshiba for under $100.00. (Not sure if Sam's carries it, also.)

Now that I'm looking at Newegg, there's two different JVC models for the same price tag, but that only leads to confusion. What are the true differences between the MV78B and the MV77S? Those are the two models shown. Was one better than the other?

Well the B is for black and the S is for silver...LOL . Hope that helps. Seriously as you would have guessed the 77 model is an older version. The 78 is the current model. Go to JVC and search their website for info on older models.

Before bothering to do that I would search for jvc combo dual dvd/vhs reviews or whatever pulls it up for you. JVC is getting slammed hard on these units. Since all my other JVC equipment has been solid I have to assume they have a different manufacturer doing their combo units. I wish this wasn't the case because I really want the MV78B model myself.

Yeah, especially since JVC was the inventor of VHS, and Toshiba the inventor of DVD, yet... They don't make the products for them anymore, even tho you would think those two brands would know what they were doing after all these years. Rather tricky marketing anymore, and no more R&D like it was when these technologies first made it big.
