I have the A35 HD DVD player and for now I have used the optical cable for sound but I now want to try out the analog cables to see what True HD sounds like compared to DD. When I set up my player to decode it and turn the receiver to the correct input, what should it read and how to I verify if I am hearing True HD?

I may be wrong but I don't think your player can decode Dolby HD/DTS-HD. I'm pretty sure the only way to do that is to use a receiver or other outboard decoder and send the digital signal to it.

dmcfan, I believe that what you are wanting to do is in fact possible. Your player does decode Dolby Digital Plus, TrueHD, and DTS HD (but not master). The only way to get these higher bitrate codecs is to either use HDMI or to use the multichannel analog outs. Now, I haven't been able to find anything that confirms that the A35 does have multichannel analog outs, but you obviously have the machine there, so you would know. If it does, there will be 6 (or 8, if it's 7.1) RCA jacks all together. You'd need to hook these to your receiver and then select the multichannel inputs on your receiver. Different receivers do this differently (for example, mine will only allow the multichannel inputs to be selected on the DVD input) So, check your receiver's manual for how to select those inputs. You'll also need to set up your speakers again for those inputs. In other words, you'll need to define the bass management, speaker distances, and speaker levels for your analog connection. This probably will need to be done in the DVD player, because most receivers try to avoid converting an analog signal back to digital. You may also need to set up your player to output the analog signal instead of a digital signal--and of course, you'll need to select the TrueHD track on the disc, keep in mind that not all discs have a TrueHD track. Anyway, I hope that helps. If I've confused you in any way, let me know and I'll try to explain myself :)
