I thought I'd ask some help. I'm looking for a DVR with both a burner and a HDD that can record both digital and analog closed captioning. I'll settle with a closed captioning decoder box that can output both digital and analog closed captioning.

You either know exactly what I'm talking about or you don't. :)

Let me get it started. I know the Philips DVDR3575H/37 will record analog closed captioning. It will not, however, record digital closed captioning.

It may be that there is no DVR that can do what I'm asking.

The Tivo Series 3 HDTV supports both analog and digital captioning but getting Tivo would mean that I would have to pay half a million dollars over the next 15 years just to watch TV. That's kind of lame.

I'm looking for a DVR that you don't have to pay a monthly fee for and can still record both analog and digital captioning. And I'm sure there are other people looking too.

Let's get the conversation started. :D

Wow. That's a lot of money. I'm pretty sure I can get a really big plasma TV with $4500. That's just insane. Tivo must be a huge money maker.

That's just insane. For 15 years, I'd agree. Especially since you're likely to go through more than a couple of TiVo's during that time, also.

Actually, that's a low estimate, and is just based on today's lowest price. Every three years when you go to renew the service, it'll very likely increase in price, just like everything else.

Not sure what you heard or read that led you to believe the Philips DVDR3575 couldn't record digital CC, but it CAN record both analog and digital closed captioning.

The digital CC is OFF by default, so it has to be turned ON in a CC setup menu that also allows all sorts of format settings, such as font size, style, edge type, opacity, etc., etc. See pp 35-37 of the manual.

The digital CC doesn't show on screen while recording but does get recorded. The analog CC is ON by default and it stays on screen while recording.

Of course, "showing on screen" requires your TV to be set to show CC on screen, which is not a normal TV default. When playing back an analog or digital CC program, you still have to make sure the TV's caption display is ON.

Also, when playing back, the CC won't appear instantly...it takes a few sec for CC to begin displaying on screen.

I just tested and verified all this.

Wow- according to the manual of the new Magnavox HDD unit at Walmart it does all this also- That Philips seems like it has same menu interface(format settings). Here is that thread.

The Tivo Series 3 HDTV supports both analog and digital captioningHowever, it doesn't have a burner. You could hook a burner up to it (as I have), but if you retain the dual-tuner aspect, you cannot schedule recordings to burn on the burner -- you'd have to burn recordings manually (pressing "Play" on the TiVo to start playback). And, of course, whatever you burn would be SD. This arrangement works very well, IMHO.

Tivo must be a huge money maker. At that price, TiVo loses money. The costs associated with providing what you're asking for are far higher than you understand.
