I've been having a discussion with someone about the bandwidth capabilities of HDMI pre 1.3. It was my understanding that HDMI has had the ability since it's inception (1.0) to carry 1080p video and 8 channels of 24/192 PCM audio at the same. Is this correct? He has been told that it requires HDMI 1.3 due to bandwidth constraints in earlier versions of the spec. We could really do with a confirmation one way or another.
Look forward to your replies!

It was my understanding that HDMI has had the ability since it's inception (1.0) to carry 1080p video and 8 channels of 24/192 PCM audio at the same. Is this correct?Yes, the maximum bandwidth of HDMI has been capable of 1080p60 since version 1.0 and the maximum bandwidth for PCM audio has always been 36.86 Mbps, which is enough for 8 channels of 24-bit/192-kHz PCM audio. Also audio data is carried in the blanking intervals for the video and does not add to the bandwidth of the HDMI signal.

Thanks for the confirmation much appreciated! Also does that mean that HDMI does not support the transfer of audio on it's own but rather there must be a video signal present as well?
