Hey guys,
So I've been researching all different kinds of hard drive based multimedia devices for the past two days and I've gone through a bunch of different kinds, MediaGate, Modix, PixelMagicDesign, Galaxy, and some others. I've narrowed it down to two brands, Mvix and TVix, but from here I cannot decide what to buy!
I had originally intended on purchasing a 500GB external hard drive (backup my system, movies, music, photos, ext) but realized that it would be nice to have a device that could serve as BOTH an external hard drive as WELL as a way to play my movies and such on a TV (since most of the movies are have are in digital formats and this would be a lot easier than having to author a DVD everytime I wanted to watch one)
So yeah, the main function of this system will be an external hard drive and its secondary function will be a media player.
There have been quite a few features I have noticed on both brands players that I have considered but I still cannot make a decision on which to buy.
Being as I want to use this as an external hard drive, size is definetely a factor in the purchase, I don't want something huge to lug around, preferably something I can fit in a backpack or small bag. HD compatibility isn't that big of an issue since I'm a high school senior going off to college and won't be using a HD TV anytime soon. I would like it to be able to connect to regular TVs though and be able to watch without much hassle of having the wrong cables and such. Interface is a HUGE factor, I want the interface (TV interface) to look at least DECENT. Wireless capabilities I see no real need for since this will be serving as the main storage unit for my laptop and therefore everything will be on it and unless anyone has any practical uses for wireless capabilities I don't really see the need. Finally the ability to play music without having to connect to a TV would be something nice.
I am currently looking at the Mvix 5000R and possibly the 760HD (although I don't see the need to pay an extra $150 for wireless + HD codecs which I will probably never need) and on the TViX side I am looking at the M-4001SH and the M-4000PA/SA.
I am split right down the middle between the two. The Mvix has a nice LCD on the front that has the explorer and everything so you can listen to music and navigate the folders without requiring a TV and it also has a nice price tag of only $189.99 for the 5000R. The 760HD version has a lot more compatible formats but I would like to know whether I really need them or not judging by my situation.
As for the TViX the interface is a LOT better than the Mvix from what I've seen ( http://youtube.com/watch?v=EgbAI1Zy74I assuming this is what the interface looks like) Also the remote is much nicer and it appears to have all the codecs the 760HD has for the 4000P for $100 less (according to tvixusa.com)
I also had the question of whether the host USB ports are really necessary for the system and what benefits they contain. Also I noticed that on some of these media devices they have 5.1 surround sound with 5 channels on the back for audio connections but the Mvix says it has 5.1 RCA sound? What does this mean?
Finally, any experiences from what you guys have had with the systems as well as customer support ext, any information at all would be useful. If you have any suggestions for a better system that would be awesome too!
Thanks a lot!!
