Hello all,
As the saying goes, I am a newbie. My old dvd player that I bought in 1999 has finally died. I am looking to upgrade. However, I am not in a position to fully upgrade to HD-DVD yet.

I have a sony 34xbr960 crt tv with a hdcp compliant dvi port.

I want an upconverting dvd player. Will the hdmi connection with a hdmi-dvi adapted cable allow the transfer of 1080i signal from the dvd to the tv? Or does the "handshaking" have to be between two hdmi ports?

In other words, will the dvd player see that the tv is capable of receiving 1080i and output 1080i even though the tv does not have hdmi?

I have heard that in order to output HDTV over hdmi, the tv has to be able to communicate with the hdmi device.

Thank you.

btw, I am looking at the oppo 970hd or 980hd models. need something to last me a few more years till I delve into HD-DVD.

If you dvi input on the TV is HDCP compliant then you should have no problem with the Oppos. Players with HDMI output usually always enable HDCP even when they aren't required to do so (resolutions > 480p).

I've used both the 981HD and 980H with a DVI-HDCP display (in my case, a Zenith C32V37) and it works flawlessly. As PooperScooper says, you should be just fine.
