View Full Version : Squeeezing raster on Sony 1252 for widescreen 16:9 image?

I've largely finished setting up my 'new' Sony 1252 pj.
I'm very happy with the result though one thing is that I'm running a 16:9 screen and in order to get the image to the right aspect I've had to really squeeze the raster, all the way from 128 down to about 25 in the vertical size.
People talk about trying to not overdrive the electronics through extreme adjustments. Would this be one of those extreme adjustments. Do people just put up with it as a necessary evil? Or is there an alternative such as a voltage pot on the board that I can adjust?
(That's how I adjusted it on the 1031QM I used to own.)

Nope, you're fine. Some of hte older 12XX sets wouldn't go all the way down to a 16:9 ratio, so you're good if you can.

Thanks Curt,
I can stop worrying about it now :)

Sorry to butt in, am assuming that 1271 can be squeezed to for 16:9 since it's a higher model than 1252. Am I correct?

sj64, can you please give me some step by step notes on how you did it?

Hi v1rtu0s1ty,
I can't answer that question myself. The 1271 is higher spec'd but is marginally older than the 1252/1272 models. It should though.

I take it you haven't started setting up your pj yet? You'll find squeezing the raster down is pretty simple. I won't go through the specific steps, you'll find them in the installation manual downloaded from Curt Palme's website. Also I recommend Mooneyass guide that you'll find right next to the install manual.

-Basically I started by centering and maximising my rasters looking into the lens'.
-Then I positioned my pj such that the green crt was projecting an image that filled up the width of my screen. I did this using a pattern from my intended video source (HTPC) at one of the resolution/freq I intend using. (1280x720@90Hz) I do this because the internal pattern can have a different size.
-All that's left is adjusting the vertical size of the green crt. I squeezed it down from midpoint 128 to around 25 - to bring the top and bottom within the edges of my 16:9 screen. The circle in my test pattern (Nokia) should be nice and round, rather than oval.
I might be wrong here, but I think when the size for the green tube is changed the other two change as well - their size adjustments are always relative to the green.

-Once the green is done, the other two could be converged onto it.

As per Curt Palme's suggestion I replaced the spacers with springs and rubber washers for the Red,Blue assemblies. This meant I could converge them left/right mechanically, without being stuck at a set distance for the pj. Thus keeping my rasters centered on the phosphor; where the best focus is to be had. And also keeps them maximised because I don't need to worry about sending the raster too close to the edge of the phosphor.
(I'll say though, I got nervous putting those springs in. The whole crt has to be pulled quite far forward to get them clear of the bolts. And I could feel quite a lot of resistance from wires attached to the crts. The sockets had to come off anyway, and I ended up getting a friend to stand at the back and make sure I wasn't about to break anything whilst pulling the crt forward. They also popped the springs and washers on whilst I was holding the crt up. Mechanically adjustable convergence was something I didn't do with my 1031QM and I knew I wanted to go through the effort this time 'round.)

I opened my 1271 2 weeks ago but I didnt see my spacers with springs or rubbers. Is this a must? Where is it bought and how much?

Here's the link to Curte Palme's section on the Sony 12xx projectors. There's links to different sections that describe all the various aspects of setting up these projectors.
Additionally you'll see up in the 'General' tab on the left hand side further info common to all projectors including a CRT primer to get you started. Curt has put in a lot of hard work getting all of this info together - so that us 'big screen' enthusiast can understand and effectively use our projectors. (For which I am grateful.)

You'll find most of your answers in there. So start reading and good luck ;)

THe springs and washers allow for variable Scheimpflug adjustment for better corner focus, but it's not mandatory.
