View Full Version : Another 'Lens flapping' question

I was thinking about adding adjustable lens flapping (scheimpflug) to my Sony 1252.
Looking at the different thicknesses on the spacers for the three settings, tells me that the adjustments needed are very small.
I was wondering if I could simply add a firm rubber washer on each corner, leaving the plastic lens spacer in place and then tighten the screws as needed.
What I'm not sure about - is that doing this will evenly raise the entire lens assembly a few mm's further away from the crt screen. Would that matter?

I like the idea of this solution because of it's simplicity, straight away I have a default scheimpflug dialled in and I can then just make minute adjustments.
I'm already fairly happy with the current scheimpflug. I only notice a slight lack of focus in the corners specifically when I am trying to focus the corners. Otherwise when I'm watching a movie I don't notice it. So call me lazy but if the required solution is anymore complicated - as I've seen in one or two other people's setups - I'll likely leave it as it is.

I have seen mod's describing what you propose except using springs (stiff) instead of compliant washers.

The only thing that gets me is the lens weight. These lens are heavy it would seem as though you would need some very stiff springs and or high durometer washers to deal with creep over time.

One good thing about the mod. is if it seems to un-reliable you can alway just reinstall the sony plastic washers.

I am dissapointed in the focus of my 1252 with the standard center/central focusing scheme.

Also some others have been used rubber washers.

I use rubber washers, It gives more than enough movement, for focusing.

""you can alway just reinstall the sony plastic washers.""

you still use the plastic rings, it gives a good starting point.

Thanks guys, I will give the rubber washers a try.

R.A.T.G., I've thought about the creep of the rubber as well given the weight of those lenses.
What I'm hoping would happen is that the rubber would 'settle' over a few days and after that any further distortion would be minimal. I think because the adjustments are so small, particularly strong rubber washers can be used and won't distort much over time.

If you really want to get corner-to-coner focus, try this: http://www.mooneyass.com/Sony1270Q/

As for basic lens adjustments beyond the fixed plastic spacers, look here: http://www.curtpalme.com/Sony125x_SpacerMod1.shtm

One thing you can do to prevent the "creeping over time" due to the weight of the lenses, use 2 nuts on each of the mounting screws; kind-of like a locking nut. It worked for me.
