:):)I just bought a new HDMI enabled xbox 360...I hooked it up to my Panny PT AE1000U which of course is a 1080p projector. When I go to select the 1080p output on the xbox settings it has the 1080p grayed out...the highest I can select is 1080i...what gives...im Pissed!

Check your HDMI cable. Since you have a front projector, your long cable probably is not good enough passing 1080p signal. Try a short HDMI cable to see if it works for you. Not all HDMI cables can pass 1080p signal. If you're not sure, look for cables that are HDMI 1.3 category 2 certified which guaranteed to pass 1080p signal.

I had the same issue with my Pioneer Elite 940HD plasma.

Turned out that the Pio ONLY accepts 1080p/24 via HDMI and the Xbox ONLY sends 1080p/60 (which I did not realize).

Could that possibly be the same issue for your projector? I kind of doubt it though after reading the specs on your projector - it seems to be pretty high end.

Thanks guys for the input...im running a 25' Gefen HDMI cable through a gefen HDMI splitter that allows me to play xbox on TV and the Projector.
Gefen says that their cable will pass 1080p through the splitter as well as the cable length...SO WHATS THE PROBLEM!?..IM STILL VERY UPSET AND MICROSOFT IS NO HELP...THEIR TECH SUPPORT PEOPLE/MONKEYS ARE IDIOTS!...of course i feel like an idiot as well not being able to fix it.

Funny thing is, it will let me select 1080p through component but NOT HDMI!

Like I said, try a short HDMI cable to see what happens. No cable company can guarantte anything for anything over 10 feet unless they are certified.

EDIT: is your projector HDMI or DVI? The spec I saw is DVI. If that's the case, it could the the issue as standard single link DVI port does not support 1080p. You need dual-link DVI port to support 1080p, IIRC. All the HDMI to DVI cable/converter only support single link DVI.

Well, when I use my BD player (BD P1000) I get 1080p. It is just with the XBOX 360
I am USING the HDMI connections.

Are you getting 1080p/60 from the BD player?

You're probably getting 1080p/24 or 1080p/30 from the player, and you're getting 1080p/60 from the Xbox 360, which is not compatible with your display device, at least over the digital connection.

It could be the HDMI transimitter inside XBox 360 is weaker than your BD player. According to a post on Gefen web site, you may need a booster if you use Gefen switch with 15+ feet long cable for 1080p to work reliably.

That COULD be possible,...BUT wouldnt I still be able to select 1080p frmthe xbox settings anyway?...that is my main question...Why cant I select 1080p from the settings blade on the 360?
It has the choices of 480p, 720p, 1080i, AND 1080p...the 1080p option is "greyed out" so I cant even choose it...that is what I dont get.
In my other 360 the non HDMI one, I used the component connections to a display that the max rez was 1080i but I still had the option to chose 1080p.
Now, with my new HDMI equipped 360 connected to a full 1080p display device via HDMI, I cant even select it....I dont get it.
Regardless if a display cannot handle 1080p you still had the option to select, now I do not.

Try hooking the HDMI cable directly without the splitter and see if that works. Every TV should accept 1080p/60 so thats unlikely to be the problem. There are 2 possibilities:

1) Cable
2) Splitter

The 360 greys out what the TV doesn't support. My first thought was your TV doesn't support it but since others confirm it does it has to be one of these two. To test the cable just swap the one that works on the Blu-Ray player with the 360. Maybe the 360 doesn't play well with splitters...

HDMI being digital can 'sense' what resolutions are supported on TVs thus the reason its greyed out (I think the handshake does this). Component is analog and doesn't have that capability.

Yeah I just thought about that as well...avoid the switch box and hook it up direct.
But again, how come I was able to select 1080p from component on a 1080i MAX resolution display (I would not have gotten a picture, I know.) but I had the choice...

The difference is that HDMI transmits EDID from your TV to XBox 360 and other handshake stuff before anything can be displayed while component is one way communication.

Nah, single link supports up to 1920x1200, and 1080p is a fair bit less.

I had a 3' monoprice HDMI cable that I found in my setup that wasn't allowing 1080p through my Xbox 360 Elite. I took it out. Turned off everything and hooked up a different monoprice HDMI cable. The 1080p option returned. The bad cable was just purchased and appeared to be in great shape. However, I could only get 1080i out of it so I hooked it up in another room with a 1080i satellite receiver. It worked fine for a week or two but HDCP failed. I had to throw it out.
I'm now using a ConnectGear HDMI 4x1 switch and ConnectGear 1x2 splitter with 1080i and a 1080p displays. Using displays with different max resolutions presents its own issues that can cause the Xbox Elite 360's and PS3's 1080p options to be unavailable. That's for another thread.

Wesley, your post got me thinking when you said..."Using displays with different max resolutions presents its own issues that can cause the Xbox Elite 360's and PS3's 1080p options to be unavailable. That's for another thread."
I have a 2x2 HDMI splitter for that very purpose...So I thought that maybe the shortest cable from the splitter which goes to the TV that is only capable of 1080i was somehow stopping the longer HDMI cable to the projector from recognizing that 1080p signal, and you know what? IT WAS!...I solved my problem. All I have to do is pull out the HDMI cable going to the TV when I want to watch an HD DVD in 1080p on the big screen...kind of tacky but its not that big a deal for me.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH! and EVERYONE ELSE who tried to help.

I'm having the same problem with my new hdmi pro. I can do 1080p through component just fine but when I try HDMI, i can only get 1080i. I have the hdmi going from my 360 to my denon 4306 which has hdmi 1080p passthrough, then to my tv. My PS3 and mac works just fine and i get 1080p / 60 with no problems. when I take the HDMI cable thats plugged into the ps3 and plug it into the 360, no 1080p. I have also tried running the 360 strait to the tv; no soup. tried to switch HDMI cables; no soup. Any ideas?

I'm having the same problem displaying 720P content with my Xbox 360 Elite <-HDMI-> Denon 2808CI <-HDMI2DVI-> Sanyo Z2 Projector.

Rarely it negotiates 720P or 1080i without any problems, while most of the time (90%+) it reverts to 1024x768.

I have since went to 720P via component to the receiver, and HDMI from the receiver to the projector. I have no issues now, but now I cannot view Netflix content in HD, because of HDCP requirements.

So have you tried connecting direct from the 360 to the projo? Doesn't make a difference for the sound portion with HDMI or optical for the fact that it is only dolby digital either way.

Wow, I just read this whole thread and I think this is the first time that this very important bit of info was revealed. Plus YOU DID A LOT OF YELLING.

IMHO, this issue would've probably been settled in three posts if all the connection info was given at the start. :)

Sorry, I meant to put that in there. Yes, it works directly to the projector.

I realize it doesn't make a difference audio wise, but I need to connect my HTPC via HDMI. That is why I use the receiver to switch HDMI sources.

The only thing I have yet to try is a HDMI cable other than the one that came with the 360.

Does anybody know if the 2808CI passes the HDMI signal, or does it buffer it (a HDMI switch vs HDMI repeater)?

In the end, I think I'm going to keep it hooked up via component. Like I said before, the only problem with this is the fact that Netflix will not stream HD content without HDCP. As a result, HD streamed content will be output at 480p via the component. This is fine, I will use my HTPC to stream netflix instead. Unfortunately, the HD streaming is not available via a PC, at least that's what I have heard.

I believe that Netflix HD will do 720p or 1080i over component -- http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/10/30/debunk-xbox-360-streams-hd-netflix-over-component-just-fine/

I'm thinking about switching my 360 to component. Currently I use VGA, and my TV (Pioneer 1150HD) way oversaturates anything on the VGA input. This actually isn't at all noticeable for games but it's a little obnoxious on video content.

Awesome! I will leave it connected via component. I bought into the whole HDCP rumor.

As far as your VGA problem goes, I assume you've tried playing around with the color depth?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906663

You can choose one of the following reference levels:

* Standard: This is the default reference level and should work for all displays. Use this mode if Intermediate and Enhanced yield poor color quality.
* Intermediate: Use this mode if Enhanced yields poor color quality.
* Expanded: This mode is preferred for HDTVs but will yield poor results on many VGA monitors and older HDTV displays.
