Mine was just delivered, in a totally different type of package than I have ever seen Amazon use.

I found PQ/AQ to be very decent, though not of mind-blowing reference quality. PQ doesn't pop like F4-ROTSS, but it is very film-like and does not show any obvious compression artifacts. Audio is very atmospheric, but not as dynamic as 28 Weeks Later or as epic as Kingdom of Heaven.

Overall, I'd say the presentation does the source material complete justice. Fans should be pleased.

Mine was in a weird box as well and came from the "returns" dept. in Texas. The case was also completely crushed. Luckly the disc and art were okay and I have spare BD cases from sleeve city lying around.

LOL if this film looked like F4.. there would be something wrong, this is a very dark, foggy film ;)

Does it contain the excellent documentary about Jack the Ripper that appeared on the two-disc director's cut? If not, I need to score a used copy of that disc.

Unfortunately it does not have that documentary. All it has is a commentary track, trivia track, deleted scenes and the theatrical trailer.

Are you serious?

Does Fox not own the rights to the special feature from their DVDs?WTF??

Where do I send emails complaining about every single one of their titles price and special features?

Yep, I was browsing the special features menu when I wrote that. It sucks, I know.

Good reason to keep the SD DVD around I guess.

I never saw the movie in theaters or DVD, but Johnny Depp is really growing on me as an actor (after seeing him again in Edward Scissorhands, et al), so I'm thinking of getting 'From Hell' on Blu-ray.

The review on Rottentomatoes seems undecided, 57% rotten.

Are there any reviews for the Blu-ray edition? How is the movie itself?

Any comments would be appreciated.

I've got it but haven't viewed it yet. I'm a big fan of Depp and this movie so it was an easy purchase.

I like it a lot because of how moody it feels and the way London is portrayed during the time of Jack The Ripper's reign of terror. Any fan of Johnny Depp's work should see it.

I love Depp's acting. I'll forgive him the occasional turdtacular performances/titles like secret windo, priates trilogy or astronauts wife, charlie and the CF.

But if the script is written well he shines. My favorite performaces form him have been:
Blow
Fear and Loathing
Donnie Brasco
Dead Man (can not wait for this to come to BR!)
Don Juan Demarco
Edward Scissorhands
Gilbert Grape
Cry Baby (guilty pleasure)
Ed Wood

I got it and it looks pretty good, a really great movie, SQ is good as well. FOX however is annoying and doing it's old tricks for having an over priced bare bones catalog title. The excellent documentary on Jack the Ripper which is on the SD-DVD release is missing from this BLU-RAY release.

The movie is faithfully based on the Royal Conspiracy theory of Jack the Ripper and follows it fairly well, the theory has been disproven but it is one of the more interesting theories and who Jack the Ripper was.

Okay, I found this tidbit from another thread:

Roger Mathus wrote:

First impression (from chapter sampling) is a dark but quite stunning picture. Colors are vibrant, picture is tack sharp and the appearance is very 3D like. I am viewing on new Marantz VP15-S1 1080p projector using FireHawk 10 ft screen. Feed is from Pioneer Elite player at 1080p 24 fps. Film is very very graphic. Can't wait to see it in entirity.

Also, its based on Jack the Ripper. Very interesting (if not morbid), theme for a movie. I think I'm sold on this one.

Considering how often you voice the same complaint about Fox anytime any of their titles are discussed - you may want to consider just putting it on your custom sig. ;)

Its a very enjoyable film, although i cant say anything about the PQ as I havnt watched it in Blu just yet. I cant wait for a release of The Ninth Gate which was another one of his creepier films.

Watched today.. No problem with 1400. PQ wise.. I'd give 4.. For Sound, I'd give 4.5.

Depp's acting as always is superb but I think the story could have been written a bit better for this movie. If I remember correctly the movie did not do that well at the box office (I think partly because it was marketed as a thriller/horror type of film and turned out not to be). IMDB users give it a 6.8 out of 10.

When they change there methods of releasing discs then I'll stop complaining, until then they are the worst studio so far for high-def.
