View Full Version : Bubble, the worst high-def movie I've seen
xradman 10-10-07, 04:03 PM I finally got around to watching couple of Magnolia Blu-ray discs I've been putting off for a while. First up was One Last Thing, which I rather enjoyed. The MPEG-2 encoded picture was soft in places, but overall, an interesting story and well acted.
Then I put on Bubble. This Soderberg directed independent production has now taken over from Feast as the worst high-def movie I've purchased in either format. What a disaster from the story, to acting, to guitar riffs that pass for soundtrack... Wow! I understand that the actors were not really actors and the entire movie was made for $1.6M, but did they really need to put this out on Blu-ray this soon?
mumbles3k 10-10-07, 05:01 PM I liked Bubble quite a bit. I love how it takes genre-bending to new heights by presenting a conventional noir story in a completely unconventional fashion. I also love how the movie works as a sort of tutorial for aspiring filmmakers on how to work with non-actors and available light/locations, etc.. I heard that this the first in a series of movies that Soderbergh intends to make in the same fashion, and I can't wait to see what's next.
Rusty James 10-10-07, 05:08 PM I liked it too. I found a lot of scenes in that movie where nothing was happening (like when they're having lunch in the factory cafeteria) to be weirdly engrossing. And even though the actors were obviously non-professionals, their somewhat stilted performances grew on me. I was totally absorbed by the end, when one of the characters is interrogated by the police. Wouldn't want every movie to be like this one, but I thought this one was pretty good.
Franchot 10-10-07, 05:15 PM I also really enjoyed this movie which I saw on DVD first. I happily bought it on Blu-ray. I thought it was very well done and was a refreshing change from the same, old unrealistic stuff with which Hollywood bombards us.
skoolpsyk 10-10-07, 08:36 PM Really liked this movie.
This was a cool movie that wass released on tv and dvd at the same time. I watched on on tv and enjoyed it quite a bit. Wasn't really suitable for HD though.
bboisvert 10-11-07, 09:42 AM I thought Bubble was pretty good (but more of a "watch once" type of thing).
We obviously have different taste though, since you also praise One Last Thing, which I found to be pretty painful and contrived. I've seen better made movies on Lifetime.
I haven't seen Bubble, but why didn't you like Feast? I enjoyed that one.
1000 Umbrellas 10-11-07, 11:29 AM I was relunctent to rent Bubble when it debuted because there didn't seem to be any consensus with the reviews except for strong feelings about it one way or the other. I say rent first, then you make the call. I think it's fantastic btw.;)

More importantly, it was also simultaneously released in theaters. Why wasn't it suitable for HD? It was shot in HD.
You should watch the Architect then because that was a horrendous movie.
Roger Mathus 10-11-07, 03:52 PM Count me in as one who really liked BUBBLE. It was never said to have big production values. For the type of film, I had no problem with the video presentation.

Too bad you didn't watch it first on HD Net Movies.....like I did. It's a half-baked film, IMO. My condolences on actually owning a copy..... :)
i actually really like robert pollard's sountrack to BUBBLE (he was the guy behind the indie legends GUIDED BY VOICES).
i'm lukewarm to the film, but i certainly wouldn't call it horrible.
I liked the Magnolia movie One Last thing... :)

Only thing good I can say about it is that it was short, only 70 minutes.:p
