Can anyone ring me in on why people are so obsessed with this film? I mean I know it's eye-candy for your HD set but common it's a nature documentary (albeit not as good as some other ones).

Why would anyone pay even $50 for this is beyond me when it's available on Discovery HD channel for free and online etc.

I had the exact same question until I bought it....and rest is history :). You'll have to watch it to appreciate it

There are many scenes on the series (for instance several with flocks of birds) that were a macroblocking mess on the DHD broadcast. It's rock solid on BD.

Bingo. My local cable broadcast looked like crap due to severe over-compression. :(

Meanwhile the Blu Ray is stunning.

The flocks of birds were amazing on BD! I do not have any broadcast service so I have not seen it any other way.

I'm in the same boat. I rented the first disc and while it looked nice and was somewhat interesting, I just can't see owning a nature documentary. Although for those that do enjoy that sort of thing, $50 is an amazing price for this set. I realize it's an incredibly popular release on both formats.

I loved the series, and will probably pick it up on dvd at some point(don't have the fund to take advantage of this deal however). I watched it all on Discovery HD, and recorded all the episodes but it took too much space(haddrive space, and list space) up on my DVR, and I had some minor pixelation at points. I'd love to have it on BD and be able to watch it whenever, and not have to worry about it taking up space on my dvr.

Update:

Just want to let everyone that I received Planet Earth BD not the DVD version today. Some people were worried thinking Fry's would ship the DVD version instead.I was really surprised how fast I got it since I used the cheapest shipping. While when I did the amazon BOGO sale and used the free 2 day shipping and placed both orders on the same day I got Planet Earth a day earlier than the two BD I got from amazon.

They restock rather quickly sometimes. I ordered five titles, three of which were out of stock... until half a day later when they restocked and shipped them. Sheesh! Talk about fast! ^_^

Enjoy Att's unique pronunciation of "algae." I still haven't gotten to see Disc 1, been waiting on if from Netflix, but I found the Att's pronunciations distracting. Having trouble remembering all the specific examples I knew a while back. I tried to tell myself they were British pronunciations, but sometimes he went back and forth. And one word I'm pretty sure he invented, adding an additional syllable or two, wish I could remember.

It must be for people like me they got Sigourney. Worth a rent, but too many sad moments and animal killings for me to watch more than once. Too much slo-mo too. Wouldn't have minded if they'd have run real-time of the same things. Surprising amount of time-lapse photography, which was pretty neat, but gets repetitive. Overall, good, but not something I'd spend money on.

Hi all-

Just in case anyone cares BB has this Blu set for 79.99 for those like me that need instant in hand gratification.

It says 99.99 on the shelf but I took in the web site listed price yesterday and the floor guy said dont worry they'll do it at the register. Get to the register and it scans 79.99 anyway. So don't go by the shelf marked price.

I know you can get it cheaper but like I said i need instant grat. and also if you read some other postings some from amazon etc are coming with wrong discs...ie. 2 #3 discs, 1 Hd-dvd disc rest blu etc. At least this way if I got wrong discs in the box I can easily return.

PS- watched the first 2 discs last night....un flippin believable video...I'd say captivating. If you don't want the narration I'd suggest going with video on the Plasma and Pink Floyd thru the receiver (and whatever else u need to go with that combo...lol).
