View Full Version : Virtual Fighter 5 Hori Joystick
Dreamaster 10-12-07, 09:38 AM Hey guys, have any of you actually tried out the new VF5 joystick? I bought one from gamestop the other day, but I walked away from my first gaming session with some mixed feelings and want some opinions from others here before I post my own.

Leo_Ames 10-12-07, 10:06 AM It's identical to the DOA stick released previousily.
I bought it for precise digital control for XBLA games. It's left me disappointed in games that require 4 way control (Pac-Man and such), being worse than even the standard 360 analog joystick or d-pad.
However, it works well for games like Streets of Rage 2. Also works well with things like Xevious and Galaga.
So I'd say if you want to play games using a digital joystick that need all 8 directions, this is a good purchase (Or just right and left in the case of Galaga). If you want to play things like Pac-Man titles and New Rally-X and so on, you will find it next to useless since you'll be hitting the diagonals every few seconds, destroying any accuracy in movement..
the guys over at shoryuken.com are quite profficient at mod'ing stock sticks with authentic (japanese) arcade internals. i've built/mod'd more than a few myself.
if/when Street Fighter HD remix ever sees the light of day, i'll most certainly pick one up & swap out the joystick & buttons. it can add about 2x to the investment... but its a fun DIY project & the results are superior to the OEM product.

Ok, you confirm exactly what happened to me. First game I popped up was classic pac-man, which kind of made me cringe... I had to really focus on deliberate and hard movements in the direction I wanted to go. I pulled up Mrs. Pac-man and for some reason she seemed easier to control, but still not good. But when I loaded up Mortal Kombat 3 I actually had one of my best games. I'm trying to decide whether or not it was worth the $60 I paid for it.

whiskey > work 10-12-07, 11:08 AM that's funny, I literally just created a thread about this same thing. Great minds truly do think alike.
FrankJ.Cone 10-12-07, 11:15 AM Graphics look great. If this is how PS3 > 360 ports look bring more PS3 exclusives already!
I was surprised how well the Elite gamepad worked. I am too lazy to go get my DoA stick just now.
Someone please tell me the voice for Sarah is not the final voice... Not only does the woman have a bad voice but she never played VF to listedn to the correct speed at which to read her lines... shes rushing the after fight lines terribly.
chiliDog 10-12-07, 12:03 PM I have the DOA version and IMO it's decent for fighting games.

HA!! Close but no cigar. The purpose of the thread is 2-fold, one is to generate discussion about the joystick that hasn't been discussed much here, the second is where you're close, in that if the general consensus is that this joystick is the best thing since sliced bread, then I'll force myself to keep using it some more armed with knowledge that most of my peers don't have any of the same issues I do with it. Secondly, I wanted to wait for a few posts till I posted MY opinion because I didn't want to "influence" the discussion one way or the other due to my limited experience with arcade sticks. As soon as I read Leo's post though I realized though that I wasn't alone in what I felt.
Hmm...

unfortunately, this is the only/best stick for the 360 (to my knowledge). however that does not mean it stands up to the cross-platform competition. stuff like Sega's Virtua Stick High Grade or Hori's Real Arcade Pro 3 for PS3 put it to shame. the reason is like i mentioned earlier, internal components.

This guy knows what's up. I've got the DOA stick for the 360 and I wish I could use my Hori RASP 3 that I use for my PS3. I ended swapping some parts out of the DOA stick to make it more responsive.
talbain 10-12-07, 11:52 PM is it wireless?
EMAGDNIM 10-13-07, 12:53 AM Which one are you talking about?
whiskey > work 10-13-07, 09:25 AM is it wireless?
no
talbain 10-13-07, 11:11 AM the hori stick. so if it's not wireless, my follow up question is :are there any other wireless arcade sticks on the market for the 360 1) currently or 2) coming soon?
i'm sorry, but i just can't go back to wired control, especially from 13 feet away from the tv...
if you are a serious fighting game enthusiast, you can get a custom stick fabricated from a hacked wireless 360 controller made with authentic arcade parts. cost would probably be $120+ but you'd be getting premium function in addition to convenient wireless form.
whiskey > work 12-25-07, 02:09 PM Picked it up yesterday. Let me start off by saying I really like everything about it. For street fighter type games it is really really good for fireballs and whatnot. My beef is with microsoft. Half of the games on the arcade and regular games won't even let you reconfigure the button layouts! And the way this thing is set up is that the a button is right under the b button and x and y are next to b. This makes it almost non functional for many of the arcade games. Bummer, because I really like the feel of it and the construction is actually decent. Once again, microsoft porked me. Bastards
FrankJ.Cone 12-25-07, 05:51 PM Microsoft did not bork anyone, some full retail games do not support button mapping on all three consoles. If you feel borked take it up with the game developers who seem to think they should not give gamers an option to reassign buttons.

you're right. Microsoft is only one of the companies that I should bork at. As a matter of fact, Bork everyone who doesn't allow buttom mapping! There, I said it.
