View Full Version : Got My Jack Ryan Collection today!
charles0424 10-22-07, 05:27 PM Called the Pacific to see whats going on and they did inform me that the collection is back ordered and they have no idea until when. So I canceled my order looked up Walmart.com and what do you know? In-stock and shipping! I placed the order and chose one-day shipping, hopefully everything goes good.
DigitalfreakNYC 10-22-07, 05:42 PM Actually Top Gun's case art for the back cover was released a few months before the release (they even had the Blu-ray back cover) and it had no special features listed. I dont think they ever planned on having special features for Top Gun. Here, take a look at the Blu-ray back cover that never got released.
An insider at DVDtalk who works at Paramount said all the extras were supposed to be on Top Gun.
Geoff D 10-22-07, 05:49 PM Ouch. I'm scanning through Sum Of All Fears and it's not a pretty sight (the transfer, not the movie ;)). It's got a very processed, edgy, digital look, with noticeable aliasing on horizontal edges.
The scenes amid the swirling dirt after the bomb goes off look like ass, with what appears to be lagging outlines on fast moving objects, like the marines who are running about. Upon pausing the picture, there's a crowd of compression artifacts around said marines as they pass through the frame, which I would say is what's causing that lagging effect.
The TrueHD audio, even at my low-level night-time listening, is pretty darn good. But that and the lack of extras doesn't make up for a bit of a shocker on the PQ front. Man, I hope the others look better than this one...
giantchicken 10-22-07, 05:50 PM So the movies are in stock but the special features are on back order?

Oh, they look & sound amazing. I wonder if The Sum Of All Fears is a review copy or a mistake of some kind, there is no way that could have passed quality control. I was thinking about contacting Paramount, even though the public wasn't supposed to have this, I wonder if they are aware of how the disc looks?
Any reviewers from the various websites get theirs yet and had a chance to view this atrocity?

You can read DVDFile's review here (http://dvdfile.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=6324&Itemid=3). Apparently, the reviewer really liked the look of all four transfers.
Geoff D 10-22-07, 06:21 PM Oh, they look & sound amazing.
Indeed. I've just bookmarked my favourite scene in Clear And Present Danger (the ambush) and it looks good and sounds even better.
WTF happened to Sum Of All Fears though? I've attached a quick 'n' dirty picture of a paused image, with some arrows to point out the schmutz around the marine.
Darcy Hunter 10-22-07, 06:40 PM Just a silly question. Do you have your player set to 720p or 1080i? This issue has come up a few times with various titles. Universal's "Miami Vice" was a common one for complaints of "blockiness" and aliasing. Just recently, someone was complaining that their Transformers HD DVD looked really bad with the same sort of problems you're describing. When he set his player to 1080i, the picture completely improved.
Geoff D 10-22-07, 06:59 PM My E1 (Euro A2) player is set to 1080i and FYI, Transformers looks superb. I've got over 100 HD DVDs and I've never seen artifacts like that on SOAF before. I just tried it in 720p for the hell of it, and it still looks like ass.
charles0424 10-22-07, 07:05 PM I'm getting worried again!! Out of stock on-line at Walmart.com, I placed my order a couple hours ago.....?:confused:
I ordered from Walmart.com this past Saturday. Just checked my order status and it shows shipped. Was still being processed earlier today.
Maestro J 10-22-07, 10:01 PM One thing about it...the TrueHD track on these movies kicks a$$.
Just watched both "Hunt for Red October" and "Patriot Games" and they sound terrific. PQ is pretty darn good too for how old they are. But the highlight is certainly the audio.
When the Red October first comes onto the screen, my whole theater lit up with deep lfe in the sub(woofer) and enveloping surrounds that gradually moved to the front as the sub(marine) descended into the deep waters.

I'm shocked to be honest with you. Maybe he has a better pressed copy of Sum Of All Fears...cause the ugliness is not subtle...it is so apparent and downright bad that the average person would be trying to adjust their sets.
If I had to rank based on PQ
1. Clear & Present Danger
2. Patriot Games
3. Hunt For Red October
4. Sum of All Fears
The audio on all is absolutely superb....The TrueHD tracks really rock.
Im hoping to post pics soon.

I don't doubt you one bit. Who knows what conditions were involved that made that reviewer not notice these problems.
Darcy made a good point if you use a 720p display. Are you running the video output at 720p? People have experienced aliasing artifacts on numerous HD DVDs when doing so, and accordingly decided to run 1080i and let their display handle the de-interlacing.
hawaii sun 10-22-07, 11:12 PM rec'd mine tonight, we'll post comments later.

I have a 1080p display and have my A2 set to 1080i via HDMI. I changed the settings to 720p just to see if anything would happen, its the same.
tkbryant 10-23-07, 12:45 AM Ok here's the pics I promised...theres alot of Clear & Present Danger just because there were so many eye candy moments..I could have taken 100 pics...the whole disc looks outstanding. Hands down, the best looking catalog title I have seen. Enjoy! :)

Gary Murrell 10-23-07, 12:53 AM I am pissed
I drive to a local super walmart at 1am, this store has a massive HD/BD section and they get every new title, I run in and see Jack Ryan sitting there in all its glory for 59.99$, I almost shat
I take it to the counter to checkout thinking they mistakenly put it out and the lady working the register basically says too bad, no sale, the set rang up "recall do not sell" and the system wouldn't budge, so there I sat lad in hand, I came home with nothing but Scary Movie on BD :(
-Gary
DiCecco 10-23-07, 06:43 AM Mine shipped today from Walmart online . I just received shipping notice. I must have just got under the deadline. I ordered it Saturday right after Amazon canceled me.

I feel your pain Gary cause the same thing just happened to me a hour ago!!! I did place a order yesterday on Walmart.com and chose overnight shipping. As of right now my order is "processing" *fingers crossed*
Glad I got mine last week from Wally World. Still haven't had time to watch any of them, but glad just the same, as I could care less about any extras.
As for the sum of all fears, oh well. Of the 4 movies, that one was my least favorite, so I'll live.
charles0424 10-23-07, 11:11 AM YES!!!!!
My order has officially been shipped from Walmart and will arrive tomorrow!! I was afraid it would get canceled, especially after being unable to buy at the store and then 5mins after placing my order online the product had switched to "not available online" today is a very good day :):D
cardiac161 10-23-07, 04:05 PM Future Shop in Vancouver (not sure about the whole of Canada) is still selling the Jack Ryan HD-DVD boxset. I just picked it up today and checked their website as well (also available).
DigitalfreakNYC 10-23-07, 05:30 PM Sorry but can someone explain to me why everyone is clamouring to get a set that is going to be re-released anyway? it's not like this is going to disappear forever...or even for very long.
dnbois56 10-23-07, 07:14 PM This set may have been recalled but the word is obviously not reaching all the B+M's . I saw this on the shelves of Walmart-CC-BestBuy and Newbury Comics. I was tempted but the reviews I've seen are not good for the picture quality of Sum of all Fears which I'm admit I liked.
Saw them at Walmart, attempted to buy but when the cashier went to ring them up, the cash register told him that he could not sell them. Oh well, I tried!
Bob Black 10-23-07, 08:15 PM I got mine today at FYE. I had pre-ordered the set at FYE.com (had a gift card from used returns) for $63, but they canceled it on me. I called the Salem, NH store last night and they confirmed they had one copy. They held it for me and I grabbed it this morning. Of course, it was FULL MSRP at $99.99, but the manager marked it down to $89.99 since I had originally ordered it for less on their site. A lot of money, but I had a gift card to cover it all...and I hate waiting for things! :D
dalamchops 10-23-07, 08:41 PM WOW i saw the entire thing at wally world for $47.... i was so ready to jump on it, too bad nation wide walmart system's marked it for recall already.

The thing is we have no idea WHEN it will be re-released and some people like myself were really looking forward to this title. In all honesty I don't see Paramount reissuing this until after the New Year and I just don't wanna wait that long, especially since it will be the same exact disc's but a little different packaging.

What he said. It's been pulled twice. Not giving them another chance to do it again.
Got mine from "u know who" yesterday.
Dr Kain 10-24-07, 12:44 AM NO Best Buy should be selling this set, as we were ALL given a memo last week.
Surely this won't take long to get back out.
If it is just a 'typo', what do they have to do?
The artwork will be stored on a computer. Just delete the bit that mentions the extras (I presume a small window on the back cover) and write in something else.
Send it to the printers - how many copies? 1,000? 5,000? It'll take 20 minutes to run off.

I think he is referring to its re-shuffled release date. It was originally scheduled for Sept then pushed to Oct.
Scubawoman 10-24-07, 09:40 PM I don't know if this website is reliable, I've never ordered from them before but they have Jack Ryan Collection in HD in stock. They are in California, total with shipping of $2.99 and my tax (in CA) is $67.09. They say they have 29 in stock. They have Paypal and google checkout available. I'm going to order.

rover2002 10-25-07, 02:03 AM Not sure if this has been posted but here goes.
Got my Amazon order today, Top Gun & Transformers. Now, on the flyer inside Transformers there is an add for the 'Ryan Collection', nowhere does it have special edition on the box.
So this hopefully is good news in that they only need to redoo the box art and bang back out the door :)
bunkaroo 10-25-07, 02:15 AM I think he is referring to its re-shuffled release date. It was originally scheduled for Sept then pushed to Oct.
Yes that's what I meant. Poor choice of words on my part.
Delayed twice.
Edit: Oops, stupid mistake. I thought the Jack Ryan HD DVD collection was back on Amazon, but I was wrong. (I was looking at the SD DVD -- man, how lame am I?) Sorry to any who read my post and got excited. :(
Kris Deering 10-25-07, 09:59 AM Watched C&P Danger last night. Must say, the video looks good, but has its issues. It has obviously been put through a NR filter. The image has a bit of a pasty look in the details and I even notice some obvious motion blur from it, similar to when you apply a NR circuit to a display. It is quite clean though and I can understand why so many may like it. I haven't had the chance to look at the others yet. My pj died last week and I didn't get a replacement in until yesterday.
Tom Monahan 10-25-07, 10:34 AM Saw them at Walmart, attempted to buy but when the cashier went to ring them up, the cash register told him that he could not sell them. Oh well, I tried!
I had the exact experience at Walmart last night. It scanned do not sell so the front of the store cashier called the electronics department. They gave her the price so she just manually entered the price and I was able to purchase it.:D Now I don't know if I should open it or sell it.

They were closed last night when I ordered. Just called them, they haven't had their website updated yet. They will cancel the order due to the recall.
Oh well I'll just have to wait.

I wouldn't get too excited. That's the same box art that is being recalled. The picture is just so small that you can't make out the words "Special Collector's Edition" under each individual title, but you can see that there is some text under the titles.
Tom Monahan 10-25-07, 12:22 PM If I were to open up the box just to check out the picture quality on these 4 discs would anyone be willing to buy the collection off of me for say $68 shipped via the USPS. I payed $60 so the $8 would be for shipping and paypal costs. I also might be willing to sell individually. I'm just testing the water a bit.;) PM me if you might have interest. My Ebay ID is 1100porphyry if you would like to check my 100%. I am an AVS Club member by the way.

Geoff D 10-25-07, 04:48 PM Kris is right about Clear And Present Danger. It does look a little too smooth, but IMO it's not to the detriment of the image. Maybe it's because I watched it after the visual train wreck that is Sum Of All Fears, but it really does hold up very well.
I'd prefer to have grain than not, but if the studios insist on removing it then I'd rather they do so without introducing visible nasties. I was slightly disappointed with Anchor Bay's Dawn Of The Dead for this reason, because of the slight motion lag that's apparent.
Top Gun and The Warriors are some more Paramount efforts that looks like they've had the grain sucked out (Top Gun is night and day compared to the R2 DVD), but thankfully there isn't anything left behind that impacts the image in those cases.
Gary Murrell 10-25-07, 05:38 PM Top Gun certainly had NR, as did Untouchables, Paramount has a problem in this area for sure

steven975 10-27-07, 05:27 PM My walmarts have been putting them out but they won't ring up. I tried at 3 different stores but was told outright in the first two they wouldn't be sold.
On try 3 I put on my oh-so-charming mask and pleaded with the cashier to see if there was any way she could sell it because it was my brother's birthday tomorrow. She rang up a generic item with a manual description at $59.99. I'm happy.
The discs all say Collector's Edition as do the sleeves as does the box. I'd guess they can leave the discs as-is as there are no features mentioned. It sounds like they will have to reprint all the sleeves. Hopefully it will be out by Xmas.
Now, after I watch them to I keep them or flip them for a nice profit?
FrancescoP 11-02-07, 04:01 PM Any news on The Jack Ryan Collection from Paramount?
My Amazon order was cancelled weeks ago, but still no new pre-order...
hawaii sun 11-02-07, 04:36 PM i'm one of the fortunate ones to get the movie before the recall. i think Paramount needs to repress the movie since the disc is labeled special collectors edition.
lockheede 11-02-07, 06:55 PM Well what's easier, repressing and casing the new movies or recasing the existing movies?
Usual Suspect 11-05-07, 03:19 PM An online shop in Switzerland listed it as "on stock", so I ordered one.
Just received the email that it has been shipped.
Apparently the news have not reached them yet or they do not want to return it, so I keep my fingers crossed.... :)
Just to let some of you know: I received my copy of the Jack Ryan collection approx. two weeks ago, but was unable to watch the movies because I was not home. Finally, today and yesterday, I watched Sum of all Fears. To say that the PQ is poor would be an understatement! It was really painful to watch. On top oof that, the TrueHD sound did not impress me at all, I found it also rather inefffective. Makes me wonder and hope (probably in vain): has something really gone wrong with the transfers/pressings of these 4 movies? Will Paramount really release that piece of crap again, or take the opportunity of the recall to make things right, I mean deliver a decent PQ and the supplements?

Well I agree with you that Sum of all fears has bad PQ but I disagree with you on the sound. I thought this movie sounds amazing along with all the other titles in the collection. Hunt for red October blew my socks off  As for PQ on the rest of the titles, they were very very good, HUGE improvement over the SD version (I know theres a thread floating around here with comparison photo's) Overall I am very happy with the collection and would recommend it. As for SOAF PQ sucked but AQ rocked and I actually enjoyed the movie very much.
CorruptedDragon 11-06-07, 02:44 PM Ive found that some of the scenes in SoAF are not that bad. Im talking mainly about the outdoor desert scenes, pretty sharp and detailed. The rest is not quite as bad as people make it out to be, i popped in my regular dvd and its better than that looks upconverted.

So say we all! :D:D:D
I see some have been able to purchase the JR collection, anyone whow where I can find it in the GTA?
stockmonkey2000 11-09-07, 10:21 AM I just watched Clear and Present Danger a few days ago. When the movie started I was really disappointed in the PQ. It looked like DVD during the opening titles. Once the initial boat scene was over the picture quality was HD quality, but the print did have a few marks in some places.
Jeff Gittel 11-10-07, 03:49 PM I bought it today at Borders for 99.99...the woman said that they just hadn't had time to pull it off the shelves and when I explained to her the reason it was recalled she let me buy it (with the manager's consent) and she pulled the other copy. Other Borders have said that they have sent them back but when I explained to them the reason for the recall they said they would have no problem selling them to people that want them if and the store still has them in stock...
Gary Murrell 11-10-07, 03:53 PM it is available online at a few stores for 60$
one word to those interested, Sum of All fears is a total POS, typical Paramount DNR'd crap, it is without a doubt the worst yet :(
-Gary
JaylisJayP 11-11-07, 04:06 PM Got the set at FYE today for $80. I asked the guy about the recall...he was like "I dunno." lol, the system didn't flag it or anything.
I got mine from an *bay seller last week. About equal to what Walmart was charging. FWIW - the copy I ordered from wallyworld never showed up, probably was never shipped due to the recall. They did promptly credit me tho, so no complaints there.
I haven't watched any of the Ryan's yet, since we Cars was our Sat. night. choice.
As far as SOAF is concerned, even if excessive DNR wasn't applied, it wouldn't save the movie from the miscast Affleck. Freeman as usual was up to the job, but Ben A is not believable in the role. I do like the theme of the story, since a nuke attack really is one of the scariest things terrorists could perpetrate.
I do hope Paramount didn't ruin the others, since they are good action-spy thrillers, esp. HFRO.
aaronwt 11-12-07, 06:05 AM Ben Affleck is around the age JAck Ryan is supposed to be. Harrison Ford was too old for the role. None of the movies can compare to the books.
Has PArmount announced when they will release a corrected version of these movies?
Woohoo! Just scored one off of eBay... can't freaking wait!
MEC2
Has PArmount announced when they will release a corrected version of these movies?
Nothing yet. Nor have they exactly stated whether they will correct the packaging or incl. the extras on the discs, altho they imply the packaging.

Gary, how do they compare in softness to the panned BD title, House of Flying Daggers? Is this softness what you are talking about?
So if you can get your hands on a copy of this set is it worth the 59.99???
bigjsouth 11-12-07, 10:13 PM I wish this was not a set! I want Clear and Present Danger and Hunt For Red October only. :(

FOr those who want the movies and dont want to wait for Paramount to re-release them, I would say yes. The most likely thing that is going to happen is that Paramount is jsut going to re-release without features and just repress the packaging. If this is the case then those who get the mis print get the same movies with just the wrong packaging.

If this is the case then those who get the mis print get the same movies with just the wrong packaging.
If Paramount was just going to re-release them without the features then why didnt they just send out a "STICKER" to place over the incorrect package? That would save $$$$$$.
If Paramount was just going to re-release them without the features then why didnt they just send out a "STICKER" to place over the incorrect package? That would save $$$$$$.
Who knows????? The statement that the retailers stated that there basically was a misprint and they were recalling them. Its more then just the box, its the cases inside as well. They are all marked as special collectors editions, when in fact they are just the movies. Paramount never said what they were going to do to the re release so it anyones guess on when they will come back out and what will actually be done.
JaylisJayP 11-13-07, 10:23 AM Patriot Games looks absolutely amazing. Haven't watched any of the others yet.
Just got mine in, woohoo! Going chronological. Red October looks good, uneven, TrueHD soundtrack hits and misses, but overall a notable step up from SD.
Tomorrow, Patriot Games... Atia and Boromir take on Indiana and Jules.
pacpisces 11-17-07, 04:55 AM I would say that The Hunt for Red October looks the best. Maybe because of the colors in the sub. Then Clear & Present Danger, Patriot Games, and then The Sum of All Fears.
I'm happy to own all of them and do not regret it even without the little one or two special features labeled on boxes.
The thing I noticed is that SOAF actually does appear to be a collector's edition - lots of extras on it. At least, on the sleeve...
Thrilled with my purchase.
JediFonger 11-26-07, 10:27 AM will they repackage this and replace SOAF w/crimson tide? that would rock =P
cnikirk 11-26-07, 11:35 AM Although it's a great movie, it's not part of the Jack Ryan films. It's also not going to be on HD DVD.
JediFonger 11-28-07, 02:15 PM hrm, i thought it was... >). 2many espionage movies =P
Ive found that some of the scenes in SoAF are not that bad. Im talking mainly about the outdoor desert scenes, pretty sharp and detailed. The rest is not quite as bad as people make it out to be, i popped in my regular dvd and its better than that looks upconverted.
I finally picked up this collection and popped in SoAF first expecting to view a disaster. I was pleasantly surprised...on my 92" screen it looked decent...not great but certainly not as bad as I expected. The PQ is certainly far superior to any SD DVD's I upscale and display.
Hipnotiq 12-06-07, 02:39 PM Nah, I don't think people were ready to see a movie about a nuclear bomb detonating in the US so close to 9/11. It scared a lot of people at the theater. A quarter of the people at the theater that we were at, got up and walked out.
I don't think that had anything to do with why that movie failed.
Afflecks hair alone was enough to make me walk out.
The other 3 movies were so well crafted and 'Sum' just seemed like a wanna be action movie. It felt more like a Van Damne movie than anything.
bman3241 12-06-07, 07:55 PM What online places are you getting this from?

I am a big fan of Tom Clancey's novels. The movies have been pretty good representations of his books except for "Sum of all Fears". For obvious "political correctness" the storyline was largely changed to the point where it didn't have the same intensity of the book. I don't even consider it a Tom Clancey movie.
Baraka X 12-06-07, 08:42 PM What online places are you getting this from?
This set was so easy to find, even right after the recall, that I'm surprised more who wanted it didn't grab it while they could. I got mine from Walmart.com for $75 shipped. Totally worth it for the first 3 films alone.
And for those who think Paramount is going to repress the discs and add the extra features from the DVDs (which totally blew btw) are in for a rude awakening. This will be handled the quickest & CHEAPEST way possible as in printing new sleeves. Those who think otherwise need to take a break from what they've been smoking!
bruceames 12-06-07, 08:58 PM What online places are you getting this from?
It's available mainly on ebay, AFAIK. Average selling price around $70 + shipping. Seems one seller has a lot of copies and is filtering them in a few per day.

Any update on this release that anyone knows of? I have it on pre-order but I am wondering if anyone knows something I don't about the re-release date?
Rice Rocket 01-02-08, 02:48 PM I found one with the old packaging at a local Borders the week before Christmas. Bought it for $59.99 with a 40% off coupon. Haven't had time to even remove the shrinkwrap. Check your local Borders--they may still have it "hidden" away with the rest of the TV DVD box-sets display.

pacpisces 01-03-08, 01:51 AM I just found Led Zep at borders this past weekend and it was recalled. I found the Jack Ryan at Walmart. I found the recalled blu-ray Commando at Neb. Furn. Mart. Oh, I also saw one FYE store carry Jack Ryan set before.
Brian81 01-03-08, 04:48 PM The local Wal-Mart had two copies of this and refused to sell them to me.

Actually if you wanted to watch them "Chronologically" you would have had to watch patriot games first...even though the book and movie came after HfRO, it takes place before those events.
I just got an email from my supplier for HD DVDs, I guess paramount has pulled the Jack Ryan Collection HD DVD...can anyone confirm this?
ricwhite 01-08-08, 04:05 PM I just got an email from my supplier for HD DVDs, I guess paramount has pulled the Jack Ryan Collection HD DVD...can anyone confirm this?
A . . . yeah. It was pulled months ago because of erroneous specifications on the box cover. No date for re-release.
I don't mean what happened a month ago, I mean pulled permanently, as in, there will be no re-release.

All they had to do was rebox them without typos. So now they are completely scrapping whatever inventory they recalled without any rerelease? Gee, thanks Paramount. These are some of the big catalog titles I was looking forward too.
Brian81 01-08-08, 08:58 PM Toshiba should've saved that 250M towards the Warners instead of paying it to lousy-a** Paramount. I was peeved enough that Wally World refused to sell me this boxed set, so now it looks like it won't come out? What a waste. I hope they lost a good amount of money pressing these if this is the case.
bunkaroo 01-08-08, 09:17 PM Now I don't feel too bad about spending ~$70 to get it from DVDPacific.
sroberts1220 01-08-08, 09:42 PM I found a store called Movie Stop here in Florida that still has a copy of the set for sale. I told that guy that worked there that it had been recalled. He said that he had not heard that, just that it was no longer being made. This was a month ago. I was there today and it's still available.

Depending on the price you could probly turn a penny on eBay... I'd bid. How much?
Don Borvio 01-08-08, 10:49 PM Yeah, I guess these might be a true rarity until Paramount flips and releases them on Blu-ray. I still have mine.

I think it was around $80. I'm waiting for the Paramount switch and for them to come out on Blu Ray anyway.
If anyone can get one of these from a retail store, please PM.
I am interested in it.
bman3241 01-13-08, 02:10 PM I doubt you will be able to find these at a retail store. The only place I find them is on flea bay. Anyone know of any other websites?

http://www.ezydvd.com.au/item.zml/798105
Thanks for the heads up, that's a pretty good price. The $40 includes 10% GST by the looks of it so it will be even cheaper for international orders. Too bad shipping is $20, but I suppose $56 AUD total isn't bad.

That's a very good price. If they still release it in March I will definitely order a copy.
aaronwt 01-13-08, 03:03 PM I just went ahead and placed a preorder. Even with shipping it is cheaper that the set originally cost here in the US. And cheaper than what I have seen on Ebay.
Big Brad 01-13-08, 03:48 PM I saw a copy at my local Wal-Mart and didn't even realize that it was recalled. I went back about a week later to get it and it was gone.

I don't really think they have these in stock. I think they will contact their distributor with your order request and then get a message that it's been discontinued. I think you'll be getting an "unavailable" message pretty soon. I could be wrong, but that's what I think is most likely.

I bought my copy of 'The Song Remains the Same' from them. Good news was that it came, bad news was it took a long time. I ordered on 12/13 using the $.99 delivery option, received notice of shipment on 12/14, but the disc didn't actually show up until last Friday (1/11).
I placed an order this morning as well (paid extra for quicker shipping this time) and will keep my fingers crossed. If a shipping notice is sent tomorrow, I suspect that the discs will show.

Well you guys should, especially if you believe Paramount's press release which states the Jack Ryan Collection will be re-released by Q1 2008 ( link here http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=979116 ).
Unopened box should fetch you pretty coin if you time the sales correctly :)

Pathetic.
lgans316 01-26-08, 12:24 AM #397 + 1 wasted posts. Paramount will ensure the early death of HD DVD format. Despite having so many blockbuster catalog titles I don't think they are interested in rolling them out on HDM.

Packaging costs are higher than you might imagine. Add to that handling costs (moving 4 things vs 1 thing) and you can't just divide the cost by 4.

I would imagine that many (most?) Jack Ryan fans will have the SD special editions anyway. The extras may well have been shot on SD video cameras.
So with the extras on these discs you'd have been getting nothing new anyway.
I have plenty of new HD DVDs and BDs like A Few Good Men (excellent disc, btw) which have loads of extras that I already have on the SD version. Pretty much a waste of time to have them twice.

I joined the dvdcrave queue. What are the odds that it will be released and delivered?
After hearing the various news reports from Japan I canceled my pre-order with dvdcrave.
Besides the hardware production halt, did they say anything about software? I'm hoping the disks have already been manufactured so they might as well release them.

I sold my SDs a while back. Figured with 30-50gb, the extras would be included in some fashion.
If I'm expected to keep my SD for extras and just upgrade for the HD film, then we need some multi-disc cases and a pricing structure adjustment.
pointless2 02-27-08, 09:27 PM I received this email today from DVD Empire where I had the Jack Ryan Collection pre-ordered:
We have been informed by our distributors that the item 'Jack Ryan
Collection, The' is no longer available and will not be available at any
time in the future.
I immediately re-ordered from Amazon, who still show it as a pre-order for 3/25, but I'm thinking that it may have been pulled.
DjfunkmasterG 02-28-08, 06:16 AM Not if you want to get rid of your SD dvd's.
exactly. For every HD title I have on SD, the SD gets added to the trade/sell pile. Once I get 50 more (for round 3) I will scoop them up and take them to FYE and trade for store credit to buy more HD material. I am currently at 145 HD-DVD's and after that I still have 1000+ SD discs I will need to replace. Eventually I will start buying more BRD's, but want to get as many HD-DVD's as I can, and that includes the imports.
Now if a film has no extras... depending on what extras the SD version had I may make a decision on whether to keep it or not, but most of the Paramount flicks had crappy extras anyway, so it was nothing for me to chuck those into the pile of soon to be store credit.

Damn! You may be right, and it might get pulled. If that happens, it might end up being one of those rare collector items, especially if you already have the "mistake version", that is mislabled.
Maestro J 02-28-08, 04:58 PM How valuable do you think those "mistake version" sets will be if Paramount does indeed cancel this release?

Not very if/when a Blu-Ray version is released.
I'll personally have an HD DVD set for sale once I get my hands on a Blu-Ray copy.

They have, so only ebay can tell you...
facesnorth 02-28-08, 07:31 PM Ebay has not made much sense lately with HD-DVD. Most of the movies seem to sell for more than you have to pay to get a new copy elsewhere. I'm sure you will profit on the Jack Ryan collection on ebay until the day the Blu ray is actually released.
Fingers crossed, hope DVDCrave will make it - overseas releases and distribution rights usually are independent from our monopolistic US studio interests...

I emailed dvdcrave and they replied that they will NOT be getting it.
Hi David
Unfortunately we have sold out of all HD DVD's and will no longer be

All HD DVDs or just the collection? Because they are still listing HD DVDs in stock.
My order is also listed as open but I don't believe that I've been charged anything. My email stated that I had ordered the item and I believe that I sent them my order number. Please post any additional info that is received regarding the set....

I canceled my order from DVD Crave. Got nervous about it not listing a release date so I pre ordered from ezydvd which indicates a 5/1 release date. In fact I got an email from them about it so thats what made me switch my orders around.
It's official. The HDDVD version of the Jack Ryan collection has been cancelled per DVDCrave and so has my order. :(
candyrocket786 03-03-08, 09:25 AM Damn.
Yeah, same here. :( I guess we're better off waiting for the BR version so HD DVD sets will be dumped and on top of that for cheaper.

eBay is totally usless - people selling used things for more than sealed, new price of Amazon, let alone DeepDiscount... ridiculous.

Might as well. Hopefully, by that time, they'll be available individually.
pinkeye 03-03-08, 10:17 AM This is a big YMMV...but over the weekend I went into my FYE and on the shelf mixed in with all of their other DVD box sets was a used copy of the HD DVD Jack Ryan Collection. I was shocked to see they still wanted $62 for the set but I gobbled it up nontheless. Took it home and gently peeled all of their crappy "used" stickers off...luckily there was no damage to the box whatsoever and the discs looked as if they had never been popped in a player as they were flawless, no smudges, finger prints, nothing. Even the one advertisement insert was still inside the Hunt for Red October case. I watched Clear and Present Danger last night...looked absolutely unbelievable to my eyes on my 92" screen. However, playback had a couple of hiccups, and it was weird, the left side of the pop-up menu wasn't visable on my XA1. It was like I could only see part of the menu when it popped up...same thing with the left side of the subtitles that show up at the beginning of the movie. It was as if part of the words on the left side would be blanked out and instead of seeing them I would just see the movie...strange effect and hard to explain. Maybe I need to get the latest firmware for my player and see if that fixes it. I threw in Hunt for Red October just to see if it exhibited the same phenomena and luckily it did not.
Anyway, I thought I would share my story and to say that you might want to check the stores around you that sell used discs...you might run up on one!

I picked up a used copy as well from FYE. I had a 40% off coupon and my 10% backstage pass, so I ended up paying $35 before taxes. Well worth it

40% off...that really makes it sweet...at least tell me the coupon was something special you had and not something in one of their ad sheets laying on the counter or something you printed off from their site?
sharkcohen 03-03-08, 01:09 PM This is a real bummer because I suspect it will be a while before we see this re emerge on BD.
Paramount has pulled all future releases.
Paramount (and its subsidiary DreamWorks) had nearly a half-dozen HD DVD titles scheduled for release through early Spring. Here is a complete list of the studio's previously-announced titles that have now been cancelled:
March 25: 'The Jack Ryan Collection,' 'The Kite Runner'
April 1: 'Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street'
April 15: 'There Will Be Blood '

ezydvd order canceled as well.
faux123 03-03-08, 08:04 PM Yeah, All my HD DVD orders from DVDCrave have been canceled. I am bit pissed off because I wanted the other HD DVDs besides Jack Ryan but they canceled all titles.
Got my set (shipped today) from here:

Looks like you got the last copy! Enjoy it!
heavyharmonies 03-07-08, 06:16 PM I had hemmed and hawed about ordering this one, but then once HD-DVD fell, my trick knee told me this would be cancelled, so I bought a set from a board member for $80 shipped. Not the cheapest price on the planet, but I'm glad I was able to get one at all...
Brian81 03-07-08, 08:15 PM If the BD releases are identical content and quality wise, and someone has a minty copy of the HD version that they want to rid of, I'd be interested. Though honestly, all discs would have to be scratch free and I probably wouldn't want to pay more than what the BD version costs.
Am I nuts or what I was using Amazons HD DVD catalog to grab some pics for a menu I'm making. So as I'm going through the titles I see the dreaded Jack Ryan title I'm like what wtf? why are they still listing this thing so I click on it and it's from this seller so I said what the hell for 32.00 more than what Amazon was selling at. I just want Red October mainly since the cancellation from the zon I thought oh well it's over lights out the fat lady has sung. And now I come across this so we'll see what happens lol...
Just when I thought I was out of the woods there may still be hope for the little blue guy.http://forums.highdefdigest.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

This has me laughing so hard I can't believe it showed up today, they sent the thing standard mail so I was like I wonder if I'm even going to get it. Well I came home and to my surprise there is a jiffy pack in the mail box. I open it up and my jaw hit the floor! A brand new unopened shrink wrapped Jack collection. So for 25.00 a movie I can live with that thank god I'm not bidding....

Thanks DC I really thought it was the Battlestar Galactica collection I really didn't think it would be here in 5 days via standard mail. Another funny thing is I always stumble across the JR collection when I'm not even looking for it. Like the Amazon deal I was browsing through the Target site when I saw the JR collection another eye popping moment and a big let down in the end.:(
