I really didn't want to bring this up yet again, but I could not find any information on this particular release.

Does anyone know if the German HD DVD Import of "Basic Instinct" (Kinowelt) uses the same transfer as the French and UK one? Especially where the infamous "pitch" issue is concerned?

Pitch issues were reported with Rambo, UK, French, and Australian releases, which are all I believe are all from Studio Canal. There is a German release of it and I haven't heard if it had the same problems.

Total Recall was supposed to have the same Pitch issue, but I didn't notice it and it is a movie used I watched a lot.
Supposedly this was an issue with the first pressing of the Disk and was supposed to have been fixed later, but I don't know anything for sure.


I was under the impression that it was encoded at 24p? - speedup would only happen if it was converted to 25p.
The first batch of Studio Canal HD DVDs does have higher pitched sound *although* the discs are encoded at 23.976p. This is supposed to be corrected with the next batch of discs coming in May.

EDIT: I just compared TR HD to the TR SD and didn't notice a pitch problem. The HD sound was much richer than my old DVD and to me the voices sounded correct. Maybe after next receiver upgrade I'll notice a problem :D

Well now, this raises an interesting point. Are there any *new* versions of these troubled Studio Canal HD DVDs that have the pitch issue corrected? How would you go about confirming this when ordering through say, Xploited?

I have "Basic Instinct" on HD DVD from Studio Canal with the pitch issue. I was also burned by purchasing "Total Recall" and "Mulholland Drive", both of which I sold. I have not been able to part with "Basic Instinct" because it is one of my favorite films, beautiful video transfer, poor sound indeed.

To my knowledge, Studio Canal was not going to revisit these titles, so what is available is exactly the same as what we own. :(
